Tire Recommendation and Load Rating for S60R

Noticed one of my stock pirelli rosso tires was extremely low on the way to work this morning. Going to fill it up during lunch today, but immediately started sifting through pages of old threads for tire recommendations in case the tire is shot (I have 13k on the notoriously short lived rossos after all).

Clearly PS2's (around $250 piece on discounttire) and F1 GS-D3's are the tires of choice, but can anyone give me some recommendations for something cheaper? I found recommendations for Toyo Proxes, BF-G KDW2, Conti Extreme Contact, etc, but wanted input on any recent deals out there.

Also, when searching on discount tire, it only pulled up tires with load ratings of 95Y, while tire reack displayed plent of options with ratings as low as 91. My questions is how important is the load rating for an S60R and will it void my warranty, as I am fairly certain many around here run lower than 95.

I posted this in both the tire and R forum for more traffic as I may need to act immediately. Forgive me needsdecaf and feel free to consolidate/delete this post after I get a few responses.

And please show mercy magoon and jrl

I'm quite pleased with my Pirelli PZero Neros (MS). Cost me $132 ea. and a kid here at work mounted them for me as a favor. Given a choice between them or PS2's, I'd rather have had the Michelins, based on my past experience with that tire, but past experience also made me consider that for my R, which I drive year-round, I needed something that didn't turn to teflon below 40 degrees. The Neros have been a good choice for me and have met my performance requirements. Before them I had Kumho Ecsta ASX's, which for no more than they cost, provided surprisingly good grip - about as good as my Pirellis. The Kumhos had more impact harshness than the Pirellis, and were downright choppy on roads with lots of little cracks/expansion strips, but none of them took very much weight to balance, they were silent, and rarely flatspotted. Kumho emulates Michelin for the most part, and they do a good job. At ~$96ea. I'd have bought them again but I wanted an UHPAS tire that rode smoother, and the Pirellis deliver on that.

No we haven't. I was just making a joke as I witnessed the beatings administered to newbs asking similar questions while searching through old tire threads.

I had the Pzero Nero M+S's on my SAAB, but I shied away from them for my R because of the load rating. I know you can run a lower rated tire, but I didn't want to take any chances. It is a great tire though.

Just get the F1 GS-D3's...have them match Tire-Rack's prices.

thanks guys, still calling around for pricing. Anyone have comments on the dunlop direzza sport or Eagle F1-AS? Not really looking for an all season, but do go up to tahoe frequently and would get them at the right price.

If you want a summer tire, Michelin PS2's is still one of the best tires for the R and the BEST tire for an R for ride quality AND handling, IMO, they just feel right for the Volvo.
PS ALL SEASONS are terrific and give up very little to the PS2 with double the tire wear.
This load rating on a CAR (not a wagon) is BS and meaningless. 91 and higher will be just fine unless you plan on always carrying 2 people in the rear seat and a small elephant in the trunk,

and drive at a constant 85+ mph in 100 degree (or hotter) heat!

I just had a set of Sumitomo HTR Z III installed this weekend. The dealer ordered them through TireRack and installed them for $527 total. So far, I like the tire, ride isn't harsh, little road noise and they grip really well. Thursday will tell how they do in the rain. They are on TireRack for $116 each.

if you are not going to use the tires for the track aside from going once or twice for fun then get the PS2 all season... you will never be able to tell a difference in grip on public roads.

Thank you! Glad to see someone agree with me on all the paranoid thinking on the load rating.

I put on the General UHP Exclaim's, I believe that is what they are called. I have had them for at least 6 months and I am very happy with them so far and the price/performance would be hard to beat in my opinion. They were rated very high on Tirerack.com, where I ordered them from and had them sent and installed at NTB. So far the wear is great and they handle well enough for the type of driving I do and I do not track the car at all. Unless something changes I like them enough to buy them again for the next set when needed. I know they probably don't compare to the Michelins but they are excellent for the price.

...and at 10,000 miles you will throw them away, trust me on this

Re: (cyantist)

Thanks for the input everyone.

Ended up getting the Goodyear F1 GS-D3 from Discount Tire (who matched the Tire Rack price). Not the greatest deal, but after calling around, it was the best deal I could find at such short notice. I didn't want to splurge on the PS2's, which were about $50 more per tire. The Rossos had about 3/32 of tread left after 13k miles - big surprise. The employee who came out to look at my car before installation was really into the R. I told him how the Rosso's sucked, and then he nearly cried saying he had just bought a set for his car

I wished him luck.

I asked him to be extremely careful with the car as the rims were pristine. Once I was inside, I was lucky enough to witness one of the grease monkeys stall the car within seconds and then plow the front end of the sport kit into the ground as he pulled out of the parking lot to take it around back. This is why I get so tense that I nearly pull muscles when I take my car to these janky places. I wait in fear, anxious to inspect my winglets and rims.

Once the car is pulled back around front (through the garage this time - thank god), I go out to inspect it before accepting the receipt. The rims are filthy - covered in grease, sludge, and that lubricant (sealant?) they use to install the tires. I swear they do this on purpose so you can't see scratches until after you drive off the lot. I know. That's what I get for going to discount, but it still shocks me that they don't think it's worth the time to wipe your rim clean and maybe even shine the tires to impress you as the customer.

I get out a towel and wipe them clean, to find at least one small set of scratches near the lip of each wheel, where they pry the tire off. Have they not figured out how to remove a rim without damaging it yet!?!? There is also a nice chip on one of the spokes. I inspect the rest of the exterior/interior, and the winglets appear to be ok. I go inside, explain the tragic series of events, who then says he can't prove the chip wasn't there before (like I was lying!), and they will ship it out to be refinished at my convenience. He also continues to say they treat every car like their own, and that they treated my car just like the ferrari that was there this morning. I wanted to donkey punch him at this point.

Should I even let them refinish it? I think I remember someone complaining that their rim came back more screwed than before.

Also, I have the tire protection plan I purchased with the car. Do I have to send the damaged tire in? Anyone been through this process?

Finally, I now have tire rub only when locking the wheel on right hand turns (no rubbing on the left). I think I remember someone having a similar anomaly. Does this mean the passenger side is lower than the driving side?

I know these questions can probably be answered somewhere in the trenches of swedespeed, but I spent 4 hours digging up old tire threads yesterday, and actually have to accomplish some work today, so your help is greatly appreciated.

On the bright side, the tires are great! Car feels much more planted, reduced side hop, etc, etc. I can only join the choir and preach that replacing the rossos is a must for this car. Thanks for reading my rant, and thanks in advance for any advice on my new set of questions. http://********************/smile/emthup.gif

Re: (jdog)

I have been VERY pleased with my Conti Extreme Contacts. They are a 91W rated. Excellent tires in cold weather. I drove up and back to Chicago this weekend where we got dumped on snow wise and drove back on I-65 in virtual whiteout conditions and my car felt very solid. I like the all seasons and if you drive in any kind of winter weather where you don't need dedicated winter tires, I think this is the best tire for the S60r.

They'll probably send it to Keystone, unless they have a cheaper joint that'll do it. . . .*usually* Keystone does a decent job on refinishes. The "refinish" is an acid strip and a powdercoated finish. The plus side is the finish is guaranteed for life. The downside is their color is usually off.... I've had much better luck with Transwheel when it comes to buying recon wheels, since they actually paint + clearcoat their finishes using factory/duplicate colors. Turnaround time for Keystone is usually a couple days, and since you're in Cali, Keystone has wheel plants all over the place. Transwheel operates nationally, but most of their warehouses/plants are in the midwest and eastern US, so it could take a week or two.

To reduce the anxiety of sending the wheel out for reconditioning, you may want to try and touch-up the chip yourself....I believe the wheel color can be ordered from Volvo in a tube, or at least it used to be....just dab a drop of paint in the center of the chip with the brush and let it creep to fill the space, that way you won't get brush strokes. Several applications like this will build it up to the thickness of the original topcoat, and you won't be able to notice it unless you look for it http://********************/smile/emthup.gif
