T5 vs T6 Worth the upgrade?

There is a $4k difference between the T5 and T6 (10% premium): It seems like most people are opting for the T6 or T8. I was wondering what made you decide against the T5? If you test drove it, were you able to easily tell the difference in drive performance?

PS, I did use the search function and found no threads on the T5 vs T6

We test drove both and, despite our sales person's attempt to tell us there's not much difference, we opted for the T6. The super charger on the T6 had better pickup off the starting line versus the T5. I wouldn't have minded the T8 but my wife never got comfortable that its air suspension won't have trouble down the road. Also, we are doing OSD so the price difference is under $3400.

Personally, the T6 to T8 just would be a tougher decision to me than the T5 to T6 due to the tax credit you can get in the US on the T8.

I went with the T5. Is the T6 faster, sure...but 250 HP is plenty for day to day travel. The biggest difference in driving them was that the T6 had more 'launching' power. the T5 appeared to take an extra second when putting the pedal down to really launch you. That being said, it was plenty fast for merging on highways and day to day driving.

Whether you will be happy really depends on what you drive now and your driving style. If you are coming from a sports car, or like to accelerate very fast you may be disappointed..but i think most who don't drive super aggressively will be fine with the T5.

is there really a $4K price diff after negotiations though? The T6 motor, at mid throttle, is already pretty rough and cacophonous, I didn't drive the T5 that hard, but I would not want only 250hp pushing a land barge. Also, for a lot of us, the 3rd row was absolutely a deal breaker. So yes, worth the premium.

I test drove a heavier XC90 (two row) w/ the T5 and it wasn't so bad for everyday cruising; just hauling the vehicle and a passenger weight around town. Believe me, I like/need power (have two 300+hp T6 I6 turbo's in the garage), but for an everyday commuter and grocery getter, the T5 will be satisfactory for most. However, adding passengers and cargo plus occasional hilly terrain changes the equation drastically.

I've only driven the T5 S60's but given that limited experience, I'd get a T6 in any model. The T5 takes a while to get up to speed and had no throttle response. For highway merging it's fine but in the city it's tough if you're trying to make a gap or get around turning cars. I didn't think it would be such a dramatic difference and my T6 is an XC90 which has a lot more weight than the S60. Surprisingly the XC90 felt like a "rocket" after driving a T5 S60.

The T5's in the S60s are definitely tuned differently. Very sluggish and slow to respond. When compared to the T5 in the S90, night and day difference. The S90 felt quick and responsive most likely due to different tuning.

If you like power, get the T6. Otherwise the T5 is fine and has less complexity. I got an XC90 T6 only because I needed seven passenger capacity, otherwise I would have gotten the T5. Looking to get into an S90L T5. My wife and daughter have previous generation XC60s with the T5 and feel plenty fast.

I actually commented on this in some thread before, but I can't find mine so unsurprised you didn't.

My calculator says the XC60 MSRP T5-T6 price differential is $3,400, not $4,000. Still significant $$.

Only tangible changes are the supercharger, a larger fuel tank to feed the thirstier beast, and 1" larger brake rotor diameter to handle the extra weight of supercharger, tank, and extra fuel. My observation was that both T5 and T6 were quicker off the line than most SUVs, but the T6 was noticeably quicker. Punching the throttle while driving, however, the T-5 vs T6 difference was negligible, particularly in dynamic mode. My impression is subjective, but consistent with the design differences. The supercharger disengages in the low-mid rev range after the turbo spools up and takes over the boost job. So after disengagement they are basically the same engine, except the T6 is carrying extra dead weight of supercharger and fuel. Somebody else here can probably clarify if the engine electronics tuning makes other adjustments I don't know about.

Bottom line for me: I retired from the Stoplight Grand Prix after high school, and a family SUV isn't dusting off any Lambos anyway, so T5, and save the $3,400 and the gas. T8 is super cool, does let your Inner Teenager dust off garden variety SUVs and sedans (avoid AMG, M, and S badges). If your driving habits let you go all-electric, way cool. But for most of us, cost-ineffective even after tax incentives. Very complex, a pain to charge in many parts of the US, and 500 lbs of extra weight certainly doesn't improve braking and handling.

Test drove both back to back. T5 would be adequate 75% of the time in my opinion. We went with the T6.

T5 in Japan

I chose the T5 over the T6 and D4 in Japan recently for a V60 CC. The T5 has adequate power (sub 7second 0 to 100 kmph) with reasonable fuel mileage. The D4 is by far more popular due to its fuel consumption performance and the T6 is not that popular for the opposite reason. Resale value of the T6 is not as good as the D4, although Volvo cars in general depreciate much more than their competitors.

Have an XC60 T5e and S60 T6e. The T6 is definitely faster and more fun and the bigger brakes are a definite plus. However, the T5 has smoother power delivery. The T6 is more difficult to drive smoothly due to the transitions from lots of torque when lifting the throttle. The brakes are touchier too.

If you are a normal driver then the T5 would be fine.

I would need to drive both back to back but would lean toward the T5. It's usually just my better half driving around town running errands and she really isn't concerned about that stuff.
