If the ball bearings inside the strut bearings are messed up, you should feel a pop or two when you turn at slow speed (like backing out of a driveway).

Or it may just be groaning noises coming from the suspension when turning at slow speed... that can be something else as well, like bushings.

I have this issue sometimes: are you saying new bushings might fix this?

when my front strut bearings failed, both sides, they groaned at first then made a metallic grinding noise. You notice it on tight radius and slow going turns. It sounds kind of like creaking rubber at first. Mine got horrible when temp and moisture changed; for example driving the car in the morning after it sat overnight and both failed in spring time.

Hmm. Is this something that a mechanic could see happening (read: be able to tell is taking place, not actually in action)? I guess I really should talk to my indie guy.

Todd, you're still da man!

Thanks for the props homeboy! Well I came from the Audi world so I assumed the sound was bushings in the control arms (S4's/A4's its a common thing to happen). Brought the car into the dealership and told them it makes this creaking/groaning noise on slow almost full lock turns. Mechanic came back and said the bearing was shot so I assume an indie guy should be able to diagnose. That or shoot some water displacing stuff i.e WD40 on it and see if it goes away, then you know where the noise is coming from. http://********************/smile/emthup.gif

Re: (carreragt7)

Wow Im super late lol, spring pop is most common. Almost like a boing noise. Reason being is because when the ball bearings fail they tend to bind up while turning the wheels, thus once released sounds like a twisted spring just came apart.

With the McPherson strut style the upper bearing plate reacts as the upper ball joint in an A arm style suspension. Takes a lot of load and lot of abuse so not super uncommon for them to fail. Let along the fact that most of us are lowered and have changed the suspension angles.
