Sunroof gurgling/bubbling noise after rain or car wash

The sunroof on our new XC40 T5 R-design makes a bubbling (or gurgling) sound when or soon after it rains as soon as I reach highway speed (50mph+). Almost sounds like a bong. Our dealer service department manager said he’d never come across the issue. But every time the car gets wet the bubbler sound kicks in again. No obvious leaks or gaps around the sunroof anywhere that I can see but the sound is coming from overhead apparently from near the leading edge of the sunroof glass. It doesn’t matter what position the sunroof is in (closed, vent, open) the sound still happens.

Took to the dealer yesterday and they are still working on it. Service tech says the sound only happens when the AC compressor is engaged. He’s completely stumped so they are keeping the car while they try and figure it out. Gave us a nice XC60 loaner while they are working on our XC40. Will update when/if we get a solution.

Anyone else come across this?

On an unrelated note: we really like the interior of our XC40 over the XC60 loaner we are driving. The 40 feels more spacious and has a higher more commanding ride than the 60. The 60 feels cramped in comparison. IMHO

That's why I said "feels" and not "is". Just like a small, well-designed room can feel more spacious than a larger poorly designed one. It's all about the use of the available space. IMO the 40 makes better use, both visually and physically, of the available cabin space than the 60.

The conversation in this thread had gone severely off topic. It seems my after thought on the interior design of the vehicles struck a chord with a few people.
Interesting twist, from the guy who said "XC60 feels cramped..compared to the XC40".

Can we please keep the discussion on the sunroof gurgling sound issue?
First year XC90s (2016) had a number of sunroof drainage issues and most were traced back to kinked drain hoses. The hoses run down the A and B pillars and can become kinked if not installed carefully. Volvo resolved the installation issue on 2017+ models.

You can try opening the sunroof and slowly pouring water down the drain ports and watch for outflow under the car. If you find one is draining slower than the others, it's likely kinked (or plugged with debris).

UPDATE: Our local dealer had the car for 2 days and claimed to fix the issue. They “blew out” the drain lines a “few times”. Got the car back and the first time it rained the gurgling was still there. Although now it seems to be somewhat quieter than before. But still there none the less.

On a side note... two days after we got the car back the service manager sent a text asking if the problem was resolved. Impressed with his personal follow-up and apparent concern, we promptly replied that the issue had not been resolved. In the days following his inquiry and our reply we’ve heard nothing more from the service manager or his department. Not even an acknowledgement of our reply and the persisting problem.

I've gotten the gurgling a few times leaving a carwash, and at least twice during a rainstorm. I haven't heard it lately. I've had the car since last July, and have 7500 miles on it. If it's still there at the 10k maintenance, I'll have the dealer look into it.

In 40 years of cars with sunroofs, I've only had one with a temporary drain problem. Reading the various postings here and elsewhere helped me solve the problem on my upcoming OSD by not opting for a panoramic sunroof. One does not get to see out the sunroof much from the front seat unless you have a very flexible neck. I will definitely miss it, but not the added weight high up on the roof. The old metal ones were my favorite which did not add much weight or hot sunlight in the summer. Older vehicles with much more upright front windshields had sunroof you could look out of, but an XC 40 has a sunroof that necessarily sits back with its sloping windshield. In my intended vehicle use, it does not seem to be worth it for sunlight and back passengers, especially when carrying kayaks.

Me also

2020 R-Design. I have the gurgling issue also. Though, it doesn't irk me enough to bring it into the dealership. I came from a soft-top Jeep that had some bad leaks. If a subtle gurgle sound is the worst issue I have, I'm fine with that!

This thread is one reason I ordered my XC40 without the moon roof.

Thanks for this information. I think we made a good choice to delete the moon roof.
Also, this is why we got the Momentum trim instead of the Inscription trim.
We would have popped more for Inscription, but our dealer said we could not get it without also getting a moon roof. So that cost Volvo a few grand.

I've purchased a 2021 XC40 6 months ago and would hear that same sound when it was raining and I was traveling on the highway. Had no idea what it was until I read this thread. I printed out the technical journal posted above and took it to the dealer, they fixed it under warranty. I haven't driven it in the rain yet but looking forward to testing the fix. Thanks for the post or I wouldn't have found it.

Both my 09 S80 and 07 V50 do/did this, it’s just air coming into the lines from the bottom, I always took it as a sign that the drains were open and clear/working and welcomed it.
