Stole Myself an Ocean Race

Hey everyone. New to the world of Volvos and I think I made a good "splash" (pun painfully intended). I started my career last year and with a new job and new income, decided it was time to upgrade my vehicle. I was driving a 2000 Buick Century and while it wasn't a piece of trash by any means, it was a little blah and little problems were starting to pop up here and there so I began my search to find a car I thought I would truly enjoy.

I was talking to my friend Eric (esmith813) about what I may or may not like and I basically said I didn't want an SUV or a Sedan but kind of in the middle, and AWD was pretty much the only other condition. After talking with him, I mentioned I really liked his car and he, being the owner of a VR, mentioned that I should definitely look at a P2 XC70. I was between that and a Subaru Outback, but after going to test drive a friend's XC, I basically made up my mind that that was what I wanted. So the hunt began.

After looking around and sending out several emails (mostly Eric's doing, can't thank him enough), the search looked a little bleak. I needed financing, and I wanted to find something that preferably had the 105k maintenance. We were out to wings one night when I mentioned I should just get a car as rare as Eric's. He jokingly said, "Why not get an Ocean Race!" We had a good laugh and kept on looking. A week or two later he saw a post in the Non-Affiliated listings thread here that had a link to an Ocean Race. He sent it to me and it was a little far but we figured, hey why not email them. Sent it out, and didn't hear back. Still looked around and figured the OR was gone. Then the price dropped on it for apparently no reason and we got an email back.

It was listed at $8,950 and had 100k miles on it. We said we'd take a look at it on the condition that if we were to buy it, it would get the 105k maintenance. They agreed they would do it for $700 so we said what are we waiting for? Let's get a move on!

Went to see it and my god the color was beautiful. A couple little dings that you would expect for the age/mileage. Took her for a comprehensive test drive and everything seemed great, except when we tested the AWD. I LIT UP the tires a couple times and was thinking, that's not right... Eric got out, and took a look back tires on some snow... no spin, definitely not working. I was getting a little discouraged there but they said they'd take care of it. A week later we went back up and sure enough, the timing belt and tensioner, serpentine belt, and water pump (bonus!) were all replaced... and the AWD was fixed. I believe they had to replace the haldex pump, thankfully I didn't pay for that.

So for the $8950 + the $700, I got a 06 XC70 Ocean Race edition in pretty damn good condition. The salesman (really nice guy, and shockingly honest) commented on how the guy who traded it in was saying how rare it was but apparently the dealer had no idea what they had. They also had no bites on it. Bad luck for them, great luck for me. Practically a steal! All in all, couldn't be happier in my new Ocean Race!

A nice little upgrade!

Can't wait to detail it and really get that blue shining!

Nicely purchased. My neighbour has one, they look great when polished up.

Keep the Buick if it has the 3800 Gen2 motor- that is one of the best cars GM (or anyone else) ever built. Dull, but durable, a real cockroach-and you'd get little for it in the market because people want 'bling'. Idiots...

I'm impressed the Buick is still relatively strong, 15 years old in PA. I have a 2005 Chrysler T&C, basically a rust bucket; mechanically ok, but don't trust it anymore.

Boy did you luck out, especially all serviced and the AWD fixed
ORs are nice, treat it well, I'm sure you will get a bunch of complements

You're welcome. I found that one for ya. If I didn't already have an XC and wasn't in the market for a VR that one would have been mine. Congrats and welcome to SS.

The OR with 70K miles I bought and sold just about one year ago
A CA car ALWAYS, completely rust free.
In retrospect, I probably should have kept it and given it to my wife, it was a real nice one.

Love that Blue. Is this the same paint code as was used in 2002? Was this called Ocean Blue Pearl officially? Is it only available on the Ocean Race Edition?

850 Stereo?
Subwoofer?
Xenons?
Booster seats?

Power mirrors are standard in ORs

Jim,

Not to go off-topic, but do you happen to know if the silver trim is Electric Silver or Silver Metallic? Thanks in advance.

She's a beaut alright. If you're looking for performance mods, there is a simple turbo wastegate mod where you shorten it by a single turn and it lowers the RPM where your turbo boost kicks in. I also did the IPD Softloader Stage I tune for $800. My car is 11 years old and probably has the HP of a new XC70. :D

So - did you buy winter tires for it yet?

#23 ·
No winter tires yet. Right now I have all-season (3 season) tires but it's been doing pretty well on those, I am pretty surprised to be honest. As for performance mods, I haven't given it much thought. I thought I would have it for a little while before getting into anything like that.

This OR porn may make me abandon all my efforts for upgrading to an R....

#26 ·
+1 being an R owner, I'm jealous of his OR. If performance isn't your number 1 priority, OR is the way to go.

#29 ·
Not a clue but it looks like mystic silver, it's lighter than electric silver

MaximumChicken and I will have to do a photo shoot with my car to compare...especially once I peel it that is.

I really don't think it is
It appears to be the same as 2002s and E Silver wasn't invented then!
