STI vs. S60 R Roll-on....

Have a good friend that I go to the track with that has a 2005 STI. We ran a few straight-line races yesterday.

10mph - 110mph. Roll-on. The R pulls dead even with the STI, then the R at about 60-80mph gains a half car length
Image
. The STI regains this just over 100 & gains about 1/2 car length on the R (ended at 110 with STI 1/2 length in the lead). It was so even that we were shocked! Both my friend and I thought the STI would spank the R due to the weight issue.

0-100mph. STI pulls about 1.5 or 2 car lengths off the line (lower gearing) then the R hangs lock-step with the STI up to 100 (end of race), I might have regained a half length around 70 or so, but difficult to judge at 30 feet back.

60mph roll-on. R pulls 1/2 car length with both cars starting in 3rd gear up to about 90mph.

60mph in 5th gear. STI pulls a car length on the R, then they are even to about 90 or so.

Overall it was such a close match that I couldn't believe it. I did have about a 40 pound toolbox in my trunk, but in reality I wouldn't think that would change much. I was also running blizzaks and he was on all season tires.

I didn't think the R would be so close to an "all-out" performance car like the STI. For all practical purposes, so long as you aren't starting from a stop, the R is a dead-even race with the STI. Going from a stop, you'd better hope the STI driver screws up his launch and you hit it perfect!

I'll let you know how they do on the track next year when we race each other down at Mid American on the 2.2 mile roadcourse!

IIRC, STI has much lower gearing so top end isn't as strong as launch.

2.2 miles suggests short(er) straights. I'll predict that once the weight difference comes into play on braking and turning, not just aceeleration, the Subie will beat you. My 115 HP VW ITB car can equal a chipped R at WGI, the reason... weight.

Thanks! I'll have to bookmark that!

I'm just waiting for someone to say that there's no way that the R can keep up with an STI and for the whole argument to start over. Who was the guy in Hell who pushed the rock up the hill only for it to roll down the other side? Sysyphus?

I would have thought the R would have pulled away around 100 MPH.
Seems like most of the STi's around here are modded in one way or another. I don't care for street light-to- street light racing (doesn't matter if its an STi or Ford Escort), but I see some awefully fast STi's out there (usually driven by some smug punk).

I have a gutted 1986 corrola GTS with 210rwhp.... that this will pwn my R on a track any day of the week.

Re: STI vs. S60 R Roll-on.... (R_Rated)

The S60R and V70R are like an anvil made for shaping steel. They are heavy but in the hands of crazy Volvo enthusiast who has no fear will beat many cars on the track. But a lightweight sport compact it will not beat. It is pure science

very true...5th gear on my evo sucks...these babies really aren't made for all out speed...more about going fast between and in the corners. Unfortunatly not many Evo/STI owners understand that

Well I am coming from a Sti and I can tell u that stock for stock ( i had my sti stock fopr 1 month ) and my R stock for 2 weeks they are pretty close. But I has headers . 3 " downpipe . 3" exhaust and Ecutek tune and dynod 315 whp on a awd dyno stock I hit 232 my stock R dynod 228 whp on same dyno. Now my R has a exhaust Bsr and intake and dynos 278 whp on that same dyno. Most sti's have a TBE exhaust and tune atleast and that gives them 300 whp and they will rape a R anyday with jyts those simple mods

Re: STI vs. S60 R Roll-on.... (Helmut Ranff)

Sorry to offend some of you by repeating a dead topic...

For those of you who were interested, the STI and the R were both bone stock (only mod was the rear sway bar, we were on our way to install the front sway bars on both cars). Obviously this had zero impact on the race.

And...not a chance of blowing away an STI at over 90 or 100, the STI was just slightly pulling on the R, frankly, neither car really had an advantage here.

And...it is a roadcourse, not a dragstrip or autocross. Here's the map of my favorite track...

I have been here on a GSXR600, ran mid 1:40's, in my old Saab 9-5 Aero wagon (ran high 1:50's), in a heavily modded Porsche 911 (ran mid 1:40's), in a Lotus Elise (mid 1:40's), BMW M-Coupe (1:51), Honda S2000 (1:54), some STI's creep into the high 1:40's with a few mods... NOTE: the times above aren't perfectly linear due to the driver...I wasn't in command of all of these cars, I was just "ballast".

Hoping for the R to come in the low 1:50 range with springs/sway bars. With the ECU upgrade and possibly exhaust, I'm hoping for high 1:40's. http://********************/smile/emthup.gif

sorry to burst your bubble...this has been proven on numerous occasions.

from a roll, the R has the advantage and will pull several cars...and most definitely over 100, as the STIs turbo is running out of steam.

It has nothing to do with the STIs turbo running out of steam, it has to do with the drag coefficient of the STi being quite a bit higher than the S60

Here we go again.... This is a dead issue. for those of you that think that Evo and STI are not good in TOP End than you don't know crap about cars. I have only $2,000 of modds in my Evo and have absilutely no problems with any car up too 165 mph. It's kind of funny to hear this come out from guys with volvo. I actually just got rid of my POS S60R and will never come back to Volvo. All I can say is that the VolvoS60R is a big heavy pig and it sucks in TOP end. I really don't care what you guys I will spank the living S***T out of all of you. HAHHAHAHAAHAHHAHAHHAHHA
