I have a 2021 S60 Momentum CPO. When I bought it (March '22), this warning message was on. They replaced the aux battery prior to delivery but the warning has popped up occasionally. I took it to the dealer a couple of weeks ago and at that time it was also reporting park assist system temporarily unavailable.

They reported the charge was low. Upon recharge, battery tested good and no new codes. Warning message just came on again today.

Any ideas what might be causing this?

I just recently encountered this same issue while driving from Chicago to NW Arizona last week. I believe the cold snap had some influence since my car is normally garaged and was now being subjected to subzero temperatures. I purchased a replacement battery from FCP Euro for $130 and will replace it when I get it this Friday. I have a '21 V60CC so I'm guessing its the end of the auxiliary battery's life cycle.

I did get to try out the traction control while navigating blizzard conditions while descending from Flagstaff, AZ last week. The car handled flawlessly!

The photo below was near Rimrock, AZ (40 miles outside of Flagstaff) and around 3,500' vs 7,000' in Flagstaff. This was a relief compared to the white-knuckle conditions in Flagstaff.

Here's an ass I had to deal with in Oatman . . .

And finally rewarded with a beautiful sunset in Bullhead City

That message usually appears when the support ("aux") battery voltage goes below a certain threshold and the CEM sets a trouble code for it. Once that happens the Battery Switch Control Module (BSCM) stops trying to charge the support battery.

To get the message off the support battery must be fully charged or replaced.
Next the BSCM and the main battery are disconnected.
After 15 min the BSCM and main battery are reconnected, a VIDA read-out taken and the DTC erased.

Yah I call bs that they can “recharge” a bad battery tbh. You’ll certainly know because start stop still will not function. After this I noticed it functioning within driving a few miles. I believe the computer had to calibrate some stuff but it was instantly a consistent different in the car actually turning off at stops. Assuming start stop conditions were met.

Def get any updated software if that's needed.

That said, these cars, maybe many modern cars, they are just sort of "on" all the time and can run down the battery. It has happened to me, when I am not driving frequently. I'm running about 8-9kmi/yr rate currently. I suspect maybe as the car has AGM batteries, which need to slow the charge rate as the level goes up, it seems it takes quite a bit of driving to keep the batteries charged up. Otherwise over time, first you notice the stop/start doesn't work (battery level too low) as the overall charge level sinks over time, then eventually you get the service support battery message, and the park assist message, that latter one is odd but consistent when the battery is running low. I brought to the dealer, they tested the battery, it was good, software up to date, charge level was simply low, 20% or so.

I got a battery charger and just do the overnight charge every month or so to bring the batteries back to 100% then they are good for a while more.

Not sure if helpful but wanted to share. Our family car is 22 X5 45e we only use ICE when we drive to Chicago. Most miles are EV and IC sometimes won’t operate for months. Just got the same type of message on the X5. What’s nice is that all messages like that come straight to the app and notify you. Regardless I found by research only ICE chargers the starter battery. This battery is also always used for everything just like in normal car. High voltage battery is only used for powering drive motors.

So long story shorter if you use the car a lot in EV only you Will drain your starter battery and it will premature fail.

I have a Ctech tender charger from Audi days and now charging the battery on weekly bases.

If I ever find the engineer behind this I would have a nice talk with him….

Regardless hope this helps or at least some find it interesting.

In the Volvo PHEVs, the start battery is charged when the car is plugged in, so no worries there about a lot of EV-only usage.
