Our 06 V50 has had a squealing noise for several weeks now and upon searching, most problems seem to be with the oil trap/PCV getting plugged. I've checked and the sound goes away when the dipstick is pulled out or when the oil fill cap is removed. The vehicle has 180K KM/ 111k Miles on it

Everyone seems to say that it's excess crankcase pressure that causes the squealing, which makes sense if the PCV is plugged.
However, it's the complete opposite in my case; there's a huge amount of crankcase vacuum, to the point it's actually somewhat difficult to pull the oil cap off while the engine is running!

Can anyone confirm that this is indeed an issue with the oil trap?
I'd hate to throw a $250 part at it only to find out it's something else.

Confirmed
The S40 oil trap issue is a little different than other Volvos. We have a diaphragm that tears, it's not a clogging issue. I would drive with the dipstick cracked until you get the new part. T5's are the most vulnerable to developing leaks when the oil trap goes bad as they will pressurize the crankcase under boost.
If your upper hose is corrugated like the one shown it needs to replaced also. Volvo (and others) sell a "kit".

Do it yourself & save.

Mine just started doing the same. Yep, oil trap/PCV is bad.

Just a quick follow up, got the new oil trap installed this past weekend and to my relief, the squealing has stopped.

In case anyone is interested/cares, majority of your time will be spent trying to get the stupid airbox out of the way and getting it back on after you're done.
There's a section of wiring harness channel that is bolted to the bottom right side of the airbox; unless you're willing to spend 2 hours massaging it back into place, you'll probably give up like me and zip tie it.

The other incredibly irritating thing is the bottom bolt for the wire anchor; some genius engineer(probably the same guy who designed the airbox) decided it'd be a great idea to put the AC line right in front of that bolt. You will need a stubby 1/4" ratchet or a flex head ratchet with extensions and a wobble socket.

Might also be worth mentioning that the +12v going to the starter is awful close to the upper bolt on the oil trap; you may want to consider disconnecting the battery if you're not as careful.

So, what I did before I pulled mine out and put in a Spectre to make it easier as I was taking it in and out a lot, was cut off the left most plastic rod on the airbox. It makes getting the airbox out at least 1/2 easier, as after you get the middle one past the intake manifold you can just turn it and pull it straight out.

@avenger09123 what do you mean by saying you put in a Spectre to make it easier to get your airbox in and out? What is a Spectre in this case? I haven't heard of that.

No, I meant cutting off the airbox leg closest to the passenger side made it so I didn't have to disconnect the engine mounts to get the airbox out of the enginebay.
