I have a 2004 Xc90 Awd T6 I bought used.I was looking at parts online and was looking at the splash guard diagram at a Volvo parts dealer. It looks like a skid plate goes over the splash guard.Does the Xc90 have both or only the splash guard? If it has both then mine is missing it.Also if it is missing it,is it a very critical part for protection or is it something that can wait till I can find a used one at the salvage yard?

Vehicle comes stock with only the plastic splash guard.

Per the parts description for the metal version (PN 8622717):
XC90 Protective plate, beneath the engine, 6cyl, W0446. A protective plate beneath the engine which protects the engine, sump and gearbox from impact when driving on poor roads, such as potholed or bumpy roads. Consists of a fully covering aluminum plate which also offers protection from loose stones and stone chips.

Cost is around $300 and unless you're off-roading and you feel the need for extra protection, it seems like quite a reasonable waste of money. On top of that, it appears that you would use one or the other, not both. So you would need to do something with your old plastic guard.

If you absolutely had to have one, IPD sells theirs for $280 and I think you get free shipping on it http://www.ipdusa.com/products/4841/109319-aluminum-skid-plate-p2-s60-s80-v70-xc70-xc90

Speaking of the aluminum protective plate, is there a one that fits the 3.2L 6cyl from 2007+ (naturally aspirated). I'd tried the one ggleavitt quoted a few years ago and it's a bit too short to cover the 3.2L and properly bolt on at the back of the plate. There seems to be one for T5 but I've not found one for 3.2L I6.

I just purchased few months ago original volvo aluminium plate for 2.5t 2006 VOR and I like it much more than plastic one. Engine get much better air circulation on low especially on higher speeds...plate have specially designed air entering and exiting channels and if you know that air flow under the car is very high I didnt believed how usefull is plate not only for protection of course ten times better few mm aluminium hard one than recycled chinese crap plastics cracking non stop and vibrating on high speeds...
as I drive on hways... reccomend for turbo engines.
I will post photos later.
