Slow Windows?

Are the windows on the XC90 slow to roll up and down? They felt pretty sluggish during my OSD.

They are not the fastest. However, if you want them to go up and down at the fastest rate, do not hold the button. Someday, I should time it to prove that it is true. For now, it is perceived to be true (that Auto up/down is faster) and others have reported the same on SS. BTW: I am also used to it. Not an issue for me.

Yep, this has come up before and many were chastised for mentioning it. They go up and down faster if you use the auto up down and a bit slower if you manually make em' go up and down. And yes, when I first got my XC90 I found them to be slower than previous cars I've owned. I've now become so used to it, I don't notice it anymore. It's not slow as in Oh My God, What Is Wrong, but truth is they are a bit slower than some other manufacturers.

This has been my experience exactly. And I think they are perfect. I almost exclusively use auto down/up and appreciate how it's available on all windows, unlike other manufacturers who only put it on some windows. Also, I like that when I happen to manually operate the windows, the speed is slower so that I can get the exact position I want the FIRST time.

Sorry, I was not clear. The perception is that the Auto Up/down is faster than holding the buttons. Edit: I have not timed it to verify, which is why I said it was a perception. Nonetheless, it does not bother me so I won't actually time it. ;)

Other way around. Windows move faster when auto opening/closing. Slower when manually opening/closing.

I always just push the button all the way to start it automatically rolling the windows down, then hit it again to stop when it's at the desired level. The auto roll-down is not slow at all IMO -- same as most other cars I'm used to. The manual roll-down is definitely a bit slow, but I'm okay with that as I use it more as a fine-level adjustment primarily.

The windows are slow, I compared it to my V60 wagon and they are quite a bit slower to roll down/up.

However, I always felt that the motor is only slow initially and it speeds up, thinking that the reason Volvo did it is so that the motor would pull the glass out of the gasket slower or slow down on the way up close to the gasket to "protect" the glass. Maybe it's just a way of telling myself to not nit pick :p

Seems to me that this is an intentional and desirable feature:

Quick flick for Auto Up or Down = request for full opening/closing with no desire to stop part way, hence windows operate at a faster pace

Hold down/up = slower opening/closing because you want to stop part way and by moving more slowly you are more likely to hit that “just right” spot much easier

When you just want a partial open/close it can get pretty annoying pretty quickly if the windows are fast.

The issue is when you let go but aren’t at that sweet spot you were looking for....so you need to do a small adjustment....but if you flick the switch briefly it immediately gives you full up/down and you miss that spot again....but if you hold the button a little longer to avoid the auto function kicking in and then the window speeds past that point and you miss your sweet spot again!

Much less frustrating if the full hold has a slower speed - you’ll be more likely to hit that partially open spot you’re looking for more easily.

Faster from very slow doesn't make it fast in any way.

My 2018 is 4.5 seconds down and 6 seconds up for driver and passenger. I've never thought of these windows as slow. Even when I watch it or focus on it, still seems a normal fast enough speed. Wonder if they made a change in the past couple years to speed it up.

The windows are a bit slower than my 2015 S60 on my 2018 XC90, but not that much. They do have a slow mode at the start and end of the travel for the first 2-3 inches. Combined with the fact that they run slower when you hold the button w/ your finger I think what most people do is press the auto down, then as soon as they notice how slow it's going for the first 2 inches they immediate press and hold the button, thinking it will make it go faster, but it actually makes it go slower when you hold the button down. At least that's what I did when I first got the car until I figured out how they were designed to work.

One benefit of the slow start is it's easier to crack the window open without overshooting where you want it to stop.

My xc90 had something similar problem from day 1. It will go down fine but coming up will stop every couple of inches and i can hear the motor struggling. Dealer said something was jammed and they loosened it up. No problem since then.

Someone will always find a way to defend Volvo. Cars could just blow up on a parking lot, and someone would argue that is a "feature."

More seriously... something is off very often, but not always. I have a 2017 XC90 T8 and the windows are "not very fast" - but not much slower than other brands.

My father's 2016 XC90 D5 - the windows are much, much, much slower. All of them (driver, passenger, second row, etc.).
And I don't think its a MY2016 problem either. I recently got a loaner when my car died (by now, I have driven a dozen loaners, I kid you not)... and it was a 2017 T6 Momentum, with the slow windows.

So I think there is something systemic, but it does not affect all vehicles.

Dealer: windows known to be slow, we dont know why
I believe slow as molasses would be the best description on the xc90 windows............ its has nothing to do with auto up/down.
The windows flexes a little bit to completely close when that is active

FWIW, the same is true on the Gen 1 XC90 as well.
I was somewhat surprised / annoyed by the <cough> leisurely pace the windows drop and move up.
I can only assume Volvo conducted extensive research and found this was the optimal rate in the name of safety.

I was playing around with the widows today and noticed that in the manual mode, they are only slow for about the top 2-3 inches of the opening going up or down. Once you pass that point, it goes to full speed. Of course in Auto mode, it goes to full speed right away. I think that's pretty cool attention to detail on Volvo's part
