Should I buy a 2021 XC90 t8?

I plan on purchasing a used XC90. I drove a new t8 (recharge) and I love the pep and smooth ride. My primary driver to buy the T8 is that it’s so fun to drive, and I just see any fuel savings as a bonus. If I don’t get a 2021 T8, I will likely get a 2023 B6.

I know that the 2021 T8, won’t be as nice as a new one and I plan on test driving it tomorrow. I still think it will likely be far more fun to drive than the B6.

My main concern is that the PHEV might be less reliable or that the battery might be dangerous. Considering the B6 is a mild hybrid, I have similar concerns about this car too.

Please tell me if I need to be concerned about the T8. I want to get it, and not regret doing so. I’m looking at CPO vehicles and would also consider getting an extended warranty.

Thanks for your help!

Search hvch & erad before making a decision…wonderful vehicles but can be problematic. If you insist on a t8, best version is 2022.5 with more range & power, but older sensus. I wouldn’t buy a t8 without warranty, a dealer nearby, and patience. Hell I wouldn’t touch any xc90 without warranty. Consider equipment when buying as well…highly recommend inscription with air suspension, b&w sound, and lounge pkg

The B6 overall will likely be more reliable in the long run, and the mild hybrids in general seem pretty robust. The PHEVs are still super fun and nice cars. I agree with the other comment about the ERAD (rear electric motor) being problematic. The extended range battery cars are definitely worth it too. The HVCH (high voltage coolant heater) isn't as big of a deal, but does have issues, though the new part seems to have mostly fixed the problems.

If you can get it CPO that's best, and I would definitley consider an extended warranty if you go with the T8.

I’d say if your use of the car allows a majority of mileage to be electric then go for it. Otherwise mild hybrid. I have a MY22 and love it but also big part is 90% of the time, the 20 miles on battery is enough for my wife each day. Of course the MY22.5 came out 4 months later which would be even better with the extended range. The 22.5 is an unicorn to find

I didn't vote because it's really YMMV, but I've had a 2021 T8 I bought CPO'd at 26K miles for 2 years now and have put another 20K miles of problem free driving on it except for one CEL that got tied to a tech service bulletin software thing. I say go for it assuming you get a warranty (I extended CPO out to 10 years, unlimited miles). B6 is fine, but I think the T8 is far more special (especially if you can plug in at home) and feel like tanks in comparison. I've averaged over 40mpg the last year of mixed driving, and many have done better than that. Not too bad for a 7-passenger SUV with 400+ hp.

If it's a CPO then just do the extension and you'll be good. I wouldn't be concerned... at all... about the batteries so far as a danger goes. We have Lithium batteries all around us. I frequently keep one in my pocket next to my pistol, neither has ever caused me harm.
