I have a 2018 XC60 T6 momentum. The FAT32 USB download stick never worked with the USB port in the storage console, the one with the white border. I never got a message on the infotainment screen saying there's a new map found. I spent 30 minutes to download the North American map on to my FAT32 Kingston 64GB USB stick, but the XC60 didn't recognize it. I decided to gave another try. Reformatted FAT32, downloaded Texas map to the stick, put it back in, still doesn't work. I checked the installed Texas map version on my XC60, it's older than the one I downloaded. So in theory XC60 should recognize the map and update automatically. I don't know why the USB download never worked for me. Can someone help please?

I had a problem with the Kingston flash drive, it didn't work
I used a SanDisk 64GB flash drive formatted by three different systems and they all worked: FAT32, exFAT or NTFS system.
I did the formatting on a computer with Win10 .
All files should be installed on the root flash drive - do not install them inside another folder.
Wait for Sensus to boot, then insert the flash drive into the USB port under the armrest.
Sensus should recognize the files and start updating

I did the formatting on a Mac Book Pro, using disk utilities, formatted to FAT32. The Map downloader app recognized it's FAT32, copied map files to the Kingston. It might be the flash drive itself. Will look into SanDisk. USB 2.0 or 3.0? Does it matter as the other owner pointed out?

Just tried, didn't work. Downloaded the voice control update onto Kingston 64G. Waited Sensus to fully boot up, then plug in the Kingston, nothing happens. Frankly, I don't even know where this "Voice Control" update would show up. I mean there's System Updates, Application Updates, Map Updates, never seen a Voice Control Update section. For the last 3+ years I had this XC60, never once it recognized a USB update. There's always blue bar flashing: System Update Available on top of the screen. When I go to the download center, it has a blue dot on the Map, meaning there's new map. When I go to the map screen. Nearly every map says: Map size to big, contact Volvo support. Fine, I'll just do the manual USB updates then. BUT, it never worked either. The last time I took this car to the dealer, dealer says all you got to do is to download the map onto the drive and manually update. I said it never worked. They said they'd have to charge me if they update for me because it takes time.

My other question is for this map listing screen(see below). Does this screen below showing all the maps installed on my XC60, or they're maps available to install? I mean why do I need Mexico map? It's not like I'll drive this car across the boarder. Also, how big is my XC60 on board hard drive anyway? What does it mean: Update too big? Not enough disk space on my XC60? Where to check what maps I have already installed on my XC60? When I go to this page:

Under North America section, there're so many maps. But there isn't one just for lower 48 states. I don't need Canada, Alaska, Hawaii, no offshore territories. I just need lower 48 states. Say if I want to install all 48. I have to download everyone of those region maps and check off one by one.

Some more you can try:
Put only a .mp3 file on USB drive and see if it can be played in car.
Some flash drive has hidden files/partitions or different partition types (MBR vs GPT for example) from factory.
Try remove all partitions, create one partition and format by whatever tools you know of.

Going back to basics for a minute:
1. Was your vehicle built for the US market? I assume yes.

2. Are your base road road maps set to North America? Likely yes if #1 above is yes. If your car came via OSD, it could be worth confirming and those who had OSD vehicles may wish to comment.

3. What is your Home region and is it set accordingly in Sensus? Go to Map Downloads, click on your desired home region, and “Set to Home Region” if not already checked.

Other Info
1. North America is the base map for the continent. That is the way it is and has been. There currently is no US only subregion or lower 48 US subregion - only geographical subregions.

2. The North America base map is currently v1356 (Sept 2021). There is an estimated base map update projected for 31 Jan 2022. The lack of this base update keeps the map version at v1356. The new update should [emoji1696]fix this issue.

The subregions are most current at v1363 (~11 Nov 2021).

3. If road map updates are not installing, a dealer visit may be needed. Be aware though that I did this very thing in Dec 2021 and all the dealer did was to take a USB stick and install my home region which fixed my home region but it did not fix the inability to install other maps and Volvo third party software apps. I am going back in Feb. to investigate and resolve the purported “No connection to internet” error. (It does have an internet connection for VOC purposes.)

4. [Edited] The latest Voice Control update (Nov 2021 reportedly in US) should be installed to hopefully force the road installer to work and not pause. It has been a solution that worked in the past. Download the Latest Voice Control files

Voice Control is a small file but it must be the only file on the boot directory of the USB. (If using MacOS, I delete files in Trash to insure that the USB is clean.)

Voice Control install does not have many progress indicates and can take a few minutes to start and another 5-10 to complete the install. Be patient. Ignition must be on - at least mode 1.

Correction of incorrect information for Voice Control
The latest version is from December 1, 2020 and not as you write November 2021
If you want proof you have in the links below, Volvo worldwide states the release date:
Release date 01/12/2020
Voice data version 31494215AA

I cannot download either Voice Control or Map Updates on my Windows 10 pc. The message says, "can't be downloaded securely". Any help would be greatly appreciated.
You might jump over to the SPA MY16+ XC90 subforum and review Post 1 for general understanding and approach. It is a long post and no need to read it in its entirety. Latest SPA MY16+ Legacy Sensus Road Map and Voice...

In terms of the error message, use one of the two links provided in the stickie. The interim US update webpage used to be unsecure Http:// path, but the new path is now secure Https://. You may just need to update your URL.

You can bypass this if you use the UK website. Here is a direct link to the North America USB Update path: Download maps | Volvo Support

Otherwise, you may wish to use another browser, such as Chrome or FireFox. Personally, I am on a MAC and use both Safari and Chrome successfully.

If you are trying to update a large base map (e.g., North America), the recommendation on the Volvo US webpage is to use the ExFAT or NTFS format. (I do not know why, but I thought I would point it out.)

Yes! I finally got a Sandisk 64GB two days ago from Amazon. It worked! Took a while to download the North American map. Copied it to the Sandisk(Fat32). Sticked in the USB port with the white boarder in the center storage box. Once I started the car, it recognized it instantly and started to update. Now maps are all updated. Thank you all for sharing this with me :)

So question. Just saw the new ad for Volvo: Google enabled. So what does this mean? Does it mean the Sensus Nav now is using Google Maps as the default nav? Is there anyway you can update the previous gen Sensus to Google Enabled? My gut feeling is not.

HERE is the current provider for Volvo’s legacy Sensus roadmaps. Legacy Sensus has a Google search app, but nothing else to my knowledge. (Google Assistant would be nice but I am not aware that it will come to legacy Sensus.)

Those models that have Android Automotive are Google-enabled.

I had the same problem. The solution for me was: The USB stick had to have the MBR partition table. To change this in windows. Start a command prompt as administrator: Run the following commands:
*Diskpart
*List disk
*Select Disk [number]
*clean
*convert mbr

Then format the disk as FAT32 copy the map to it and it will work :)

Hello, I have the same problem and in a resolving process I encountered many obstacles...
After many attempts of connecting my 2015 XC90 to the internet to update maps and other things, this is what I figured out :
1. When trying to connect and update maps via my Android Samsung s22 hotspot with wpa2/aes, XC90 screen shows the connection to the hotspot, but does not offer to update any map in navigation menu... does anyone know why is this like that?
2. When trying to connect and update maps via WIFI in my house with WPA2/aes, my car does not see any wifi network. Where is the wifi reciever in 2015 xc90 located? Front or rear of the car?
3. When trying to update maps via usb stick : I have many sticks from usb 2.0 to 3.2.. Is it vital which version do I use? Because none of them work...
I also tried to change mbr partition table following jp_5582 instructions and now I cannot format ma 64Gb Sandisk USB 3.2 stick... Does anyone know how to format a usb stick after this procedure... I use Win11 and my computer says that it cannot finish formatting the usb drive...

Thanks for any reply, J

I just completed updating Voice Control, Region Maps, and North America Maps. After much faffing about on my Macs, here are my conclusions...

DISK PREP:
Be sure to erase the disk completely before use.

DISK SCHEME:
MBR (not GUID and certainly not Apple Partition Map) is required. MBR did not present itself in Disk Utility on my newer ARM Mac, but was an option in Disk Utility on my older Intel Mac.

DISK FORMAT:
Both FAT32 and exFAT will work. I did not try NTFS since it is Windows only. Extended (macOS default) will surely not work.

DISK SIZE:
The size of the drive does not matter, as long as the data files will fit. Regions are typically less than 8GB, while North America requires a 64GB. Voice Control mentions using a 8GB drive, but I used a 32GB.

DISK USB VERSION:
Only used USB 2.0, not USB 3.0

DISK BRAND:
I used a quality Patriot disk and a cheap Tonpha disk.

TIME TO INSTALL:
The car cannot simply be in accessory, but rather ON with engine running. The data must be "ingested" first, which will take quite a while (15 minutes for Voice Control, 40 minutes for Regional Map, hours for North America). The "ingestion" will survive over restarting the car, picking up where it previously left off. After "ingestion", the installation will require and additional 10-20 minutes to finalise.

On a new ARM Mac, or really any Mac, If you open the disk utility and change the disk view to Show All Devices and then choose the top level device, you can choose MBR or GUID for the boot/Disk Scheme.

I tried 3 different USB sticks to update the north-west europe map (home region) on my 2019 V60 twin engine. All passed the download verification and the car recognised the USB sticks and messaged "map update in progress". There was never a progress bar, just the spinning icon top right which went on forever. In the end I got the installation to complete by turning the engine/car on (not just igntion position 1) and eventually got a message saying "turn car off to complete installation" (hurrah). It took me 2 days of fiddling to get this to work. Rubbish instructions in the user guides!
