My flying car is finally going into production? Popular Mechanics promised me that when I was 10!

I guess I didn't realize I had been praying for a 5spd auto though. Is this for the '06 MY?

Ahh, cannot divulge too much (not yet) but there is light at the end of the..."tunnel"!

Ummmm, doesn't the R already have a 5 speed automatic available?

Pardon my ignorance, but what "prayers" are you referring to?

My prayers are for a smaller turning circle.

When I brought my R in to the dealer to have Park Assist installed, the Service Manager asked me if I would be trading in the car when Volvo released the V8 version of the R and my response was not unless the turning circle was reduced and significantly.

Yannis, why are you posting this when you can't give us GT owners any information on what the heck you are talking about?? That is kind of lame.

Like mentioned before the new 295 lb-ft / 185 HP D5 will receive a new 6 speed geartronic by the end of 2005 in Europe. This information has been released to dealers in my country so it isn't a secret. Highly likely this same box will be used for the R.

So those with the current 5 speed are still screwed. What kind of answer is that?

Hm.. Looking at this thread in "5 speed" context it suggests a fix for the current GT's yes..

Yeah I've been told by sources that the R will receive a 6 speed geartronic (the one from the V8) and will be given the 400Nm which will make its performance goes similar to the MT version.

I'd have to seriously wonder exactly WHAT benifit a 6 speed auto trans would have over a 5 speed? Possibly slightly better gas mileage when on the freeway? Otherwise I highly doubt that it's any big deal IMO.
A V8 R would be a good idea but I havent heard of that yet. There will be a V8 S80 soon however.

My 2cts too...the 4speed AT in S/V70 was FASTER than the later introduced 5speed AT

The benefit is that the new 6spd GT tranny can take the full power of the 6MT R motor. Instead of the current GT: (1) being limited to 258 ft-lb (down from 295); (2) having further torque reduction to around 235 ft-lb in 1st and 2nd gear; (3) and having rpm limiting to 5800rpm in 3rd gear and above. The last point was a late addition to the limiting of the GT, and Volvo didn't even change the gear ratios to match the new shift points...ever been in an R GT when it does its short shift at WOT from 3rd to 4th? It falls way under the desired powerband in 4th. http://www.tradebotics.com/V70R/MVI_0283.AVI

So I would consider a totally unlimited 6spd GT a huge improvement over the current 5spd box situation. Considering how hard it is to launch the 6MT and the fact that you can wind up the auto with the brake at the start, the irony may be that the R 6GT will be faster off the line than the 6MT.

Re: (ChuckB)

I wonder which is more important to the readers of this thread - a new Geartronic that can handle 295 ft/lbs and has 6 forward speeds; or, an improvement in the turning circle from the current 42+ feet curb-to-curb to say, the 35 feet curb-to-curb of the S40? My vote is for the turning circle improvement.

That is the target market Volvo had in mind when the built the GT in the first place...

Well, then they sure missed the mark if they were really trying to have a tight turning circle.

Re: (avolvofan)

The point was that the limitations imposed by the GT as outlined above were done since Volvo knew they could "get away with it" since people would be more concerned about other aspects of the car...not that the turning circle was the feature -- far from it. They assumed that people who bought the GT wouldn't car that much about performance, and your comment reinforces their opinion.
