Retrofit OEM Nav into car w/ Premium Sound?

Hey all, searched through but couldn’t seem to find the info I was looking for.

Anyone know if it’s easy/possible to swap in the OEM nav screen assembly into a car with Premium sound? Since I already have the dash cutout for the center speaker, is it just plug and play? Would the car have the wiring necessary to power the flip up display?

Yes I know the OEM nav system (even from a 2013 C70) is woefully outdated, but I’ve got a plan. So just looking to know if it’s possible to get a OEM unit in there and power to it. I don’t necessarily care about getting the actual GPS to function since that seems to require all the wiring to the DVD reader (?) but at least need the screen to turn on.

Thanks!

Don’t know for sure, but I’d wager that it’s plug and hand your wallet to the dealer for programming before you can play

You’re probably not wrong...

I did just pull out the center speaker and there are no other wires hiding behind there, crushing my hopes that the harnesses would have been pre-wired. I can’t even find a schematic for the wiring to know where they would go. Hmm. If anyone has any tips, let me know!

It is 100% possible, I have done it myself to my V50 :p I my case I didn't even had the right dashboard with the speaker grill, resulting in me also having to replace the dashboard itself.

In my case 0 % of the cables where pre-wired and I guess this is the case for everyone? What I did was gathering all the wires from the junkyard and more or less made my own wiring harness.

It is also worth mentioning there exists two different versions/revisions of the navigation system for the P1 cars, one DVD based and one Hard Drive based. The DVD based where used during 2004-2007 and the harddrive version from 2008+. The largest difference between them is that the GPS and TMC module in integrated into the head-unit in the 2008+ version and in the older system the GPS and TMC modules are connected to the MOST network and are placed in the rear of the car.

If you plan to install it I highly recommend you to go with the harddrive version as it is more up to date, latest map data here in the EU is from 2018. I managed to retrofit this new version in my old 2006 Volvo without any issues, just had to replace the ICM with a 2008+ aswell.

Apart from the wiring you also have to enable the RTI system in the cars configuration/CarConfig, otherwise it will not work. You can do this manually by soldering into the CEM unit or presumable use Vida + DICE?

Hey thanks! That's great to hear. Yes, I noticed there are two versions. I have a 2009 S40, so would like to go with the newer version.

I'm really struggling to find the part numbers for everything I'll need (including the cables). Can you send me part numbers and photos for the screen, HD nav system box, wiring, etc? Or whatever you have access to. It would be super helpful to know what to look for!

Also, did you retrofit in the steering wheel control too? Or just use the remote?

I'm sure I'll have many more questions for you, so thanks in advance - appreciate any help you can give!

Sry for a late reply, hope you are still planning to install the RTI system! :D

Regarding the part numbers, I know for sure there exists many different part numbers for the same devices. I think your best luck is just to search for P1 RTI stuff on ebay or similar. Buying it from Volvo will probably cost more than your car is worth :censored:

What you will need is:

*The main MMM RTI unit (from +2008 and onward), contains the DVD reader, HDD, GPS receiver and TMC receiver. You can easily distinguish this one from the "older" system by looking at the ports on the back, the "older" system didn't have the TMC and GPS receiver integrated into the MMM unit.

*The RTI display + speaker grill, the same screen is used for the older and newer system. Any screen from 2004-2012 will work!

*IR Remote + IR-Receiver (placed on top of the speaker grill), this one is wired to the ICM unit. If you plan on installing the steering wheel control you don't need to connect this.

*Steering wheel control, only really needed if you don't install the IR-receiver or if you want both.

*GPS antenna, you can get the official and install it into the shark fin antenna on the roof OR just get a cheap one of ebay and hide inside the dash.

*Cables, I am 99 % sure none of these are pre-wired and dunno if you can buy them separately. Best shot is the get them (and the rest of the system) from a junk car, this is what I did.
The cables you will need the display cable between MMM -> Display, IR-receiver -> ICM, MOST-optical cable to connect to the existing infotainment system and power cables to MMM and the display.

All P1 uses the same system, meaning you can get it from any V50, S40, C30 or C70 car. I am quite sure the MMM is the same one used in the facelift XC90 aswell. All the parts except the MMM is the same on 2004-2012 cars, meaning you can grab the system from any of these cars/model years.

I don't know this for sure but I think the main MMM unit is region coded so make sure you buy one compatible with your region.

Also, I highly recommend you to grab a copy of VIDA, there you will find a lot of information how the system is functioning. You can also find part numbers to google for!

Feel free to ask anything about this!
