Update. This problem is SOLVED since April 2024
-----------
I have been aware there is still activity in this thread discussing the defect electrical waterpump.
The root cause is known and it is due to a defect batch of waterpumps.
I got my defect water pump installed in October 2023 and it was replaced with a good in April 2024.
Since then everything works fine.
If you have this issue, just replace the pump with a working one.
--------------

I have an issue with the water pump. It does not start every time I start the car. When this happens, I need to turn off the engine and wait a few minutes or disconnect the battery cable for some seconds before I start again. I suspect the relay to the water pump is broken and hangs in the wrong state. Does anybody know which relay that gives power to the water pump? It is a 2016 v70

I do not know if the pics will post or not.
The wiring is for a 2014 V70 4cyl 2.0. Same as your 4-cylinder.
11A/42, 70-amp fuse for the water pump, located under the hood, no relay.
It is probably on the underside of the fuse box that is installed with 2 nuts, not a push in fuse.
You could try, unplug, re-plug the main wire connector into the water pump. Inspect connector pins.
The ECM is located under the hood cowl forward of the windshield. Remove/install the ECM connector.
ECM, pin A25 controls the water pump RPM's per duty cycle speed.
The water pump, electric motor, does not turn on and run at 100% full speed.

Thanks for the information.

The water pump was replaced recently because the old short-circuited. Along with a new water pump, some cables and connectors were also replaced.
Also the EMC and the thermostat were replaced.
The new water pump works well if it starts. It follows the required rpm given by the EMC perfectly and never fails once started. The problem is it does not always start. It happens once or twice a week. To get it started in this situation, I need to turn off the ignition, wait a couple of minutes or take of the battery cable for some seconds before I start again. This is why I believe it could be related to a broken relay that sometimes get stuck in wrong state rather than a cable or connector error.

I do not know if this will post pics or not.
What happens, how do you know that the WP did not start.
I do not know why a battery reset would make the WP start to work.
We had one 4 cyl WP with an issue. The signal wire Violet/Red going from the WP to the ECM was pinched hard in the harness and almost cut in two. Cut the harness open and pull on that wire to see if it pulls apart.
Soldered the wire back together and it was OK.
go to Volvo Diagnostics – Virtual Machines, Installers and More
to view/download wiring diagrams 2005-2014 models.
View V70 08- 2014. 4-cyl 2.0L, Volvo would not change the wiring from 14-16 on the P3 platform.
Page 84, 6/113 water pump.
30+ battery to Fuse 11A/42 50 Amp to 6/113 Water Pump. No relay for the Water pump.
If these pics posted, 11A/42 50-amp fuse is #13 in the parts pic that is held in place with nuts and is probably on the underside of the fuse box.
Look on page 18 and 83 at 11B/30 fuse. 11B/30 powers up the ECM. Remove/install 11B/30 fuse and see if the WP starts to run instead of a battery reset.
From the above wiring site, 2014 late, 2015-2016 will not display probably because they are not available.

I connected my obd-scanner to the car once the engine was over heated. Then I saw the coolant pump was not spinning.
Since then I always connect my obd-scanner before I start the engine. If the coolant pump spins, then I know it is safe to drive. If it doesn't spin, then I do the procedure as described above and will not drive before I have ensured the pump is spinning.

I was able to find some wiring diagram myself from these two resources:
It seems to me like there is a relay called 2/14 R11 that connects to the coolant pump, at least on some models. Maybe mine too.
I have never done anything like this myself before, but are there relays easy to find I I decide to buy a new and can it be easily replaced without any special skills?

30+ is live all the time from the battery.
15 feed is 12V to a relay/computer after the key is turned to position I or II.
Key on, engine running, CEM grounds Relay R7 pin 2. R7 relay closes and powers up fuse 11B/17, 11B20 via R7 pin 5.
Below is the 2 diagrams for 4 cyl 2.0L.
The 3rd wiring, Relays and fuses. 2/31 R7, pin 5, feeds fuses 11B/17-11B/22
2/14 R11 is for 5 cyl Diesel, 1.6L gas.
Relay R11 is for the Diesel and 1.6L and 6/73 coolant pump.
6/73 parking heater coolant pump?, not sure.

11B/30 powers up R10 relay and 4/46 pin B:39 and B:63.
If R10 relay was acting up, it would not power up the plug coils or the ECM.
Could try swapping R10 and R12 see if it helps.
I do not know why the ECM is not commanding the WP to turn on or fuse 30 reset fixes it.

Is it possible that a failed t-stat is messing with the WP signal?

I had ECM-P059700. Volvo first suspected the thermostat. It was replaced but it made no difference. Then they checked the wires between the thermostat and the ECM, but did not find any problem. Then they replaced the ECM and the ECM-P059700 disappeared, but the problem with the water pump remains. Volvo gave up.

The error code I get when the water pump fails is: ECM-U040100. I went to another garage to see if they could have any idea. They checked and they told me this error was related to the ACM. I don't understand the connection between the ACM and the water pump.

This is what VIDA has to say about EMC-U040100
I do know about this code.
You may need an ECM SW reload. It would be rare to have a faulty new ECM.
If you are in the US market, Volvo dealerships can contact Volvo support about this code.
I do not know if other markets have this type of support.

-----------------

284: ECM-U040100 Invalid Data Received From Engine control module.
General Failure Information No sub type information, B4204T11
Diagnostic trouble code (DTC) information ECM-U040100

The engine control module (ECM) continuously monitors the system's internal components and functions.
The diagnostic trouble code is generated if the control module detects:
Internal fault in the engine control module (ECM).
The control module's test for the diagnostic trouble code (DTC) starts in the event of:
Engine running.
Note! The control module can only detect the fault once the test has been started and the diagnostic trouble code (DTC) is stored when the conditions are met.

Substitute value
None.
Possible source
Damaged engine control module (ECM).

Fault symptom
BJ, Starting/Engine does not start/Unsure when/at all times

Hello Martin.
I have the same problem.
Did you found a solution??

#50 ·
Yes, the problem was the waterpump. The original broke, the new pump was from a serie with a production defect and it did not start everytime the car started (maybe 1 out of 10 times). The root cause was hard to identify because everytime the car was at the garage, it was working. When Volvo finally identified the problem, it was replaced again and the new (3rd) works perfectly.

Maybe someone had a problem with the water pump turning on when the engine was turned off. In my case, this happens when the car has been parked for 3 hours and the electric water pump discharges the battery overnight. The OBD scanner shows errors P0598, P0647, P2600, P3019, which means that the electrics in the thermostat and water pump are damaged. I suspect the temperature sensors.
I have a Volvo S60 2.0 t5 from 2016

Hi @martin.n.gustafsson
Did you manage to sort this out mate. I am dealing with the issue despite of changing the Radiator, T-stat, Sensor, WP, Bleeder hose etc here in Australia.
Any info you have is greatly appreciated.

It appears that I have been dealing with the same water pump (WP) issue (2015.5 Volvo S60). The WP ocassionally (about 10% time recently) wouldn't kick in when the ECM was calling for coolant to circulate and that would cause engine overheating. After I stopped the car for a while and re-start the car again, the WP would typically run without issue.

Just bought an Autel MX900, it is able to feed live data. Once the WP runs there is no issue. Once the WP runs, it will start toe run at about 750rpm even the ECM calls for low speeds, it would then run at the required speed. The scanner can also run some device like the Radiator Fan and water pump. I was successful to run the Radiator Fan with the scanner but could run the water pump. I will keep on trying to run the WP with the scanner and see what is the issue.

Still trying to get it resolved. Does anyone knows the issue?

I’m now also having this issue and created my own thread for it. Pump was replaced with Pierberg in February 2025 as maintenance with timing belt and it is doing exactly what is described on this form (once or twice a week not coming on). I personally bought another Pierberg that is specified by FCP to have the updated software and it is doing this exact issue since install. It will now do it every few engine starts.

I replaced my first Pierberg WP back in Feb. 2025 and the WP just wouldn't kick in ocassionally i.e. every 5-10 trips. Struggled for two months. Bought an Autel Scanncer and pulled the two faulty codes (attached) described in the Volvo technical nots (attached).

Emailed FCP Euro and they immediately sent me a new one before I called them and asked for a Geniue Volvo WP , Genuine Volvo 32441265. I'd prefer to try a different lot of Volvo WP other than the 32382249. However, they have already sent out the replacement Pierburg WP.

Was hesitate to replace this replacment Pierburg WP with appears to be the same lot with a different serial number but got this replacement in already. I replaced the 2nd Pierberg WP this weekend (4/25) and it was good for 3 days before it wouldn't kick in once again today. After I turned off the engine, let it cooled down and restarted, the WP kicked in and the car ran well -same stuff seen in the past 2+ months. Clear that this intermittent engine overheating isse was back and it just won't go away!

The two Pierburg WPs look identical to the Geniue Volvo WP. It appears that Volvo has had Pierburg to make its WP. They were all from the same production line.

Would this lot of Pierburg WPs have anythign to do with the Volvo WP P/N 32382249? FCP Euro may be able to reach out to Pierberg and figure this out.

Has anyone figured out if the water pump 32441265 is the correct one to use? I see three different PN's in this thread.

I currently have 31368715 on my car and am having issues so I know that PN is bad.

Also, Is there a date code to check?

I don't want to keep changing pumps hoping to get a good one.
