Rebooting Sensus

Is there anyway to reboot Sensus without restarting the car? The reason I ask is my Sensus locks up completely to point that the screen freezes about once every two weeks. That is the worse case scenario. Other times certain tiles, such as the media tile, don't respond or I get a message saying "loading," but never does. When these weird bugs happen, the only solution is to turn off my car and reboot Sensus. That is a very inconvenient solution when I'm on my way to work. It would be nice if you could reboot Sensus without turning the car off, similar to the way you reboot an iPhone.

None that I've ever been made aware of. I had mine freeze yesterday after trying to use HVAC functions too soon after starting the car, thus, causing a freeze up. Being able to reboot it 'on the fly' and not having to find a place to pull over, shutdown, wait and restart would be nice. I did try at a light shutting down, opening the door and closing it and then restarting hoping it would reset it but apparently it was all too quick because it just restarted froze.

I tried the exact same thing this morning with the same result. So annoying!

yeah same, i wish there was a button combo for sensus reboot.

wish we had some sort of ↑ ↑ ↓ ↓ ← → ← → B A

Occasionally when I have had the media tile stuck on "Loading" I have been able to swipe left and then click on the actual media icon (e.g., Radio or Sirius XM) and that gets it going in the main screen. Doesn't seem like that would address your problem with the whole thing freezing though.

This happened to me over the weekend when the whether was in the same range as well. I thought the AT&T SIM casued it, but it was disable. I think I just turned on the 2nd row air right after turned on the car. The freezing happened 15 minutes later after driving and following by a reboot.

I am still holding up the May update/recall. Since software updates fix known issues, but many times, they introduce other unknown issues. As long as I know the cause of the freezing/rebooting and it's not critical, I am happy to work it around manually.

at this point i can recreate two scenarios pretty consistently, but not always....so not really worth taking the time to show the dealership ...

1st scenario: immediately upon start up trying to access 2nd row A/C controls (or even seat cooling) - typical response is full on BSOD (black screen of death) + constant reboots, or dual image overlay where the overlaid section cannot be accessed and is for the lack of a better term dead. - only real solution is to pull over and restart car.

2nd scenario: car starts up, and I reverse out immediately. First - half the time the camera has not even loaded yet. But secondly, if I back out like this and hit a stop sign or red light within 15mins and start/stop "stops" - i can always guarantee that i get about 3-4 reboots AND the sim for WiFi disappears + no Carplay functionality.

If I turn the car on, and wait for Sensus to fully load, and then back out? Mostly no problem.... it did chain reboot on me once (that i can remember) after having waited for everything to come on.

100% of the time though, after the reboot i lose WiFi to SIM data connection. (WiFi name is still there, but no data transmission is happening).

roughly 6.5 weeks of ownership and about 3900 miles.

This not good at all and seems scary that people have had to pull over and restart this 'infotainment systems' every now and then.
As someone in the forum already said, this should be reported to Volvo in large number to get it fixed.
In conventional systems you had physical buttons to set everything up.
Looks like XC90's popular infotainment system is becoming its weak point

Would there be any fall-back options to set temperature or the fan speed etc when the sensus freezes??

650 miles in with the 2017 and haven't had total freezing/crashing yet. I have also been using it pretty heavily and playing with a lot of the options. So far the worst I've had is where the media shows it is loading and seems stuck, but once I click on the Sirius/XM it comes up right away. Whatever software updates were available as of mid last week is what mine is running. Not sure if that is the May update or something else.

Since the May update, I've (personally) gotten no more random reboots. I say random because I did have it lock up when I tried interacting with hvac controls immediately after starting the car while it was still 'booting', but rebooting while driving, stopped at a light etc... None. As mentioned, with each update Sensus stability has IMO improved all around.

Only having played with the car at the dealer, I never took note of how long it took for Sensus to fully load. How many seconds are we talking about?

Here's hoping the continued software updates and MY17 don't have this annoyance.

MY17 stuck sensus

Hi,

Other than occasional reboots I encountered the following problem:

Someone called me right while sensus was booting up, afterwards:

-half of the steering wheel buttons didn't work anymore
-audio volume stayed on phone volume adjustment, no way to change the radio volume
-sensus stayed on despite closing and locking the car
- no reboot when unlocking the car, it went straight to the screen it was before
-tried factory reset, this did not change anything, except erasing all my preferred settings

It remained that way for 2 days until someone called me, and during the call suddenly it rebooted. All back to normal.

The only thing I didn't try was to pull the fuse out for the sensus system to get a forced reboot.

The dealer said I should drop by, they will reload the entire firmware and everything.

Update: this appears to be due to faulty electronic in the steering wheel as some buttons don't work occasionally, and wit will be replaced

Haven't tried since I got the latest Sensus update, but I could crash the system by selecting the voice command button while Waze (via AA) was announcing the next turn directions. In the opposite sequence, if I'm trying to use the Sensus voice commands and Waze starts announcing the next turn directions, the voice command is cancelled. Have to restart once the direction announcement is completed.

Doesn't surprise me that events happening during bootup have unpredictable behavior. The bootup sequence does not seem very robust. The rear camera starts up quickly, but it seems if you wait a little bit before putting in reverse then there is a lag before the camera starts.

Look, it's very under-powered. Anyone who says otherwise is in denial. Most auto systems generally are. Not sure why other than cost cutting in the wrong places. I keep hoping they will wake up one day and understand that a capable modern tech system is a marketing asset if not a necessity.
