I noticed that the rear seats on the V70 have an armrest, but the ones on the XC70 don't have one -- is there any reason for this or is it just a manufacturing quirk?

Actually the difference is the rear seat in a V70 is 60/40 and the rear seat in an XC70 is 40/20/40.
The upper portion of the center section in an XC70 will pop out. You can then flip it over and mount it horizontal between the two out board seat positions making a huge armrest. The picture below shows the center section down, but it can be reversed so that the leather is on the top.

I don't mean to deviate too much from the original topic of this thread, but considering the rear seats, what are your impressions of the size in both the V70 and XC70? Are they adequate for a 4-person family, or are they small? Is there a difference between the V70 and XC70 - other then the arm rests discussed earlier in the thread?
Current owners of both, would you consider same car again or look at the XC90? I personally hate SUV's, thus would like to stay away from them unless there is a compelling reason that the 70's wouldn't be adequate when my wife is ready to look seriously at them.

I have an XC that has an armrest w/60/40 rear seats. Perhaps the difference is if you get the 60/40 or the 40/20/40 seats? If your kids are in child seats or boosters, make sure you get a model with the integrated booster seat.

v70 has the same mounting for rear seats as xc70
aka if you have 40/60 seats you have mounts for
40-20-40 seats in rear yes u heard my rigth if you remove your carpet close to the rear seats you will find mounting mounting for 40L side 20mid 40R side bo issues so basikly all v70 2gen have same mounts just hiden ounder the carpetđź‘Ť
