Yes, it's only on the driver's side. There may be no light on the passenger side. Could be any empty slot used when the driver side is the right side.

 

It's the LAW. Rear fog light should only illuminate ONE side.

 

Some companies do both sides(not volvo), audi i know is one that does both sides for rear fog light. what country or state law are you referring to? ive had reports of customers being pulled over for brake light malfunction when using rear fog, they arent very well known in the states

 

Volvo only has a rear fog light on the left.

I don’t know about Volvo but my past and current Q5 have rear fog lights on both sides. The fog lights are located in the rear bumper

 

New 2020 AWD Inscription owner. First of many questions I'm sure. Steep learning curve on this vehicle.

Just need to confirm that the rear fog light is on the drivers side only. If so, what does the same light on the passenger side do? Doesn't seem to light up with anything I've tried.

Fcruise, The rear fog light switch is on the left stalk BELOW the front fog light switch. As stated above in the US, only the driver side is illuminated.

My theory is that if a car has a rear fog lamp on either side and they are near the brake lamps it would be easy to not notice when the brakes were applied. The xc40 has two but they are mounted down low in the bumper.

And as another poster on this forum said " Think of them not as "fog lights" but rather "high conspicuity" lights for conditions when you need to make your vehicle more visible/conspicuous to other drivers. Fog is one condition; but also heavy rainstorms during the day it can be nearly impossible to see normal/non-braking tail lamps until you're right up on a vehicle. Heavy snow showers day or night. Dense smoke. Pyroclastic flows from a volcano..."

 

In the US rear left lights up as the fog. Both light up during emergency braking

 

That was the case on my 2011 V50. The 2015 V60 both lit. I haven't looked at the 2020.

Interestingly on your XC40 have the same lights in the same position

Of course they bother when used in normal visibility, it's the same when some car comes from the opposite direction and use the high beams. There are stupid drivers all over the world.
In most EU countries, this is punishable by law

I have a 2009 Volvo C70 and got a message on the dash that the rear fog light bulb is burned out. I spent a lot of time online, trying to find where that bulb is located and what type/part number of replacement bulb is needed, with no luck. Any help is appreciated.
