Rear bumper removal 98 S70

I've searched and have not succeeded in finding a DIY on removing the bumper cover for 98-00 S/V70 rear bumper cover. I'm assuming it's similar to the 850. The Haynes manual I've got isn't too helpful in this regard.

Reason: a while back some idiot in the city decided to do some serious bump and push against my rear bumper and left two big gouges and some nice white paint transfer on the left angle.

Insurance examined it and declared it under the $500 deductible so I'm debating whether to purchase a new bumper cover or take it off and have the body shop remove the gouges and respray.

Either way I'd like to remove it to do the work.

Drill out the pop rivits in each wheel well, go under the bumper from the rear, unbolt the two long bolts and premove.

Reverse the process to install. You will need to buy or borrow a rivit gun and buy a handful of the large plastic rivits from Volvo.

Thanks Jim that's exactly what I hoped to hear. Any idea approximately what size drill bit to use to take out the rivets?

I've got a manual rivet gun I've used for doing aluminum work with aluminum rivets so I'm hoping the plastic rivets will install using that gun - may need to get a different size nosepiece.

Fairly small 1/4" maybe
Just look at one, it should be fairly obvious

they are plastic-coated aluminum rivets, your gun will be more than likely suitable.

i've also had success prying the old rivets out with a small flathead screwdriver. some of the time they come right off w/out having to drill out the head, you can also cut the heads of the old rivets with a pair of side cutters.

Great photos. So it looks like I'll need to order 4 rivets per side (on my S70 there are only rivets from what I can see) = ~10 rivets to do the job.

I'll throw in a couple of extra rivets just in case I bend one or something.

Seems like required components then are:
(1) Emerald Green Pearl Metallic bumper cover - from Darryl Walltrip they want $355.95 + $35 shipped.
(10) plastic rivets - figure probably less than 10 cents a piece.

Saving an hour of labor at the dealer (-$95).
Nice!

NOTHING costs .10 from Volvo!

the volvo part number for the rivets: 979878-6

the dealer retail was approx. 40 cents each earlier this year, Waltrip should be able to get them to you for slightly less since you are buying a bumper from them.

good luck!

Thanks for the part number. I figured it was closer to .50 per rivet but was hoping it might be closer to what I recall paying for the rivets on my Honda.

I can't think of a more blatant example of the difference in costs between maintaining a European vehicle and an Asian one.

But it's a price I happily pay for the Volvo experience.

More like I HAVE, I HAVE. My first Volvo was a 1974 145 (may she RIP) that I took over from my Dad back in 1986 - he was the original owner. That car was a TANK.
