Rattle from rearview mirror area

I have this rattle that I can't track down coming from the front/windshield area. It seems to be coming from the rearview mirror (I have the auto-dimming version) but it may be from the sunroof controls or even the center speaker and reflecting the sound around. It happens only when I hit bumps.

The dealership said they "weren't able to reproduce the sound" so they didn't fix anything. Has anybody experienced something like this that they could point me in the right direction? I'd like to try taking the mirror off and driving around to see if that's it, is there an easy way to do that?

EDIT: I now think the sound is from a linkage for the vent blockoff. See posts below.

EDIT AGAIN: No, now I think its the CD changer.

most dealers are deaf.... or pretend to be!
way i track my sounds is to get someone else to drive and then follow them yourself.

get patronising to be told no sound is found when you yourself know there is.

in my case, the dealer receptionist (who i know well before anyone asks) drove my car back home for that extra confirmation

I'll take a look at the rain sensor this afternoon. I tried holding on to the plastic molding over the rain sensor before (while driving) and it didn't help but of course that doesn't mean much.

EDIT: Uhh...how do you get that cover off (the one behind the mirror, covering the sensor)? Just pry the two halves apart?

Yeah, they simply snap together.

I find that the rattling (one of the numerous sounds in my S40) comes from the moonroof switch. Try holding it in place and see if that helps. I haven't figured out a way to fix it though, as it is meant to move in multiple directions (front/back, tilt)

Ok... heres one of my solutions! I have had this problem ever since I got my Sub installed. If you look at the place where the Fasten Seat Belt sign is and the Passenger Air Bag Off sign is... push that foward and up when you hear the rattle. That was always my source of rattling, and what did I do about it? I took Foam Tape and taped the grey part to the off-white/silver part on the inside of the panel... that fixed it!

Took the molding off around the rain sensor and checked the connections, then drove around without the molding. No better.

I pushed up on the piece by the fasten seatbelt indicator. No better.

It might be inside the mirror itself, how do you take the mirror off? It looks like some sort of cam lock but I didn't want to force it.

i had this same problem. my rattle came from the center channel. it started about 3 weeks after i got the car. what happens to me at least is that something is loose on the center channel cover and with certain bumps or certain types of noise from music it buzzes or rattles (very annoying) i bring it to volvo and leave it there. when i come to pick up the car they said that they couldnt hear anything and it was probably becuase i had my bass and my center channel above 5!!!!!! what the hell am i supposed to do, if i cant go above the midway mark why have it. (sorry letting off a little steam)

anyway the sound has been getting worse and its definitely something loose becuase when i hear the rattle if i put my hand on the cover of the center channel it magically goes away. im gonna being going in soon for something else so im just gonna show them then, hopefully theyll fix it or at least get me a new cover.

I don't think its my center speaker...the sound happens when the stereo is off or on, and I've popped the cover off and drove around to rule that part out.

Right now I'm thinking its inside the mirror (I've had something come loose in a previous auto-dim mirror/compass) but I can't figure out how to get it off.

I have that same rattling coming from somewhere in the dash. I havent checked the mirror or rain sensor or anything (which I will do today).

But if my ears serve me correctly, that sound is coming from behind the center speaker just to the right of it...... I swear....lol In fact Ive actually beat the dash to see if I can produce the sound with my fist. No sound and then I felt bad for hitting my Volvo. So I guess I'll investigate some more.... and mention it on my next service (7.5K)

I notice yours is an 06, mine is as well. I dont think Ive heard any 05 owners noticing the noise in the same spot we do. They all notice a rattling up by the rear-view mirror. Im wondering if its a newer thing??

I'm 99% sure that the sound is coming from the linkage that controls the louver to close off the passenger's side vent. It's worst when the selector dial is clicked all the way open or closed, probably because there is no pressure on that pivot point. However, I have no idea how to get those vents out of the dash to actually fix this.

Since I couldn't get the vents out, I just put a blob of grease on the linkage with a small paintbrush. That didn't solve the problem, but if the selector dial is "unclicked" from the fully-open position, the rattling is VASTLY reduced. I'm sure this solution will not be permanent though.

So...does anybody know how to get those vent bezels out of the dash?

EDIT: Well that fix didn't last long at all. About a day.

Well I figured out how to remove the vents but wonder of wonders the rattle is still there! I still haven't put the vents back so I'm still trying to diagnose with a gaping hole in the dash but no luck yet.

The funny thing was that when I left for work there was zero rattle, and I figured it was fixed...but as things got warmed up the rattle came back with a vengeance.

Re: (GoSwedeRacer)

1. I popped out the two vent grilles by slipping a pocketknife screwdriver in between the vent and the hinge and carefully prying the vent out of place.

2. When the vents are out you'll see 4 clips in each "duct" that hold the piece in place. I removed this piece by pulling to create some tension while I released each clip one at a time with the same screwdriver. This step is a bitch because the clips like to pop back in place when you go on to the next one. Try doing the bottom ones first then you can kinda angle the piece so it can't go back in.

3. Pull everything straight out. Keep in mind through this process which faces will be exposed when you reassemble everything and take caution not to scratch those areas.

Like I said, it appears that the piece itself is not causing the noise because it's sitting on the floor right now and the rattling persists. But at least now I think I can get a better look at what's left. So far I've ruled out:
-Speaker grille
-Vents and linkages

I found it!!! It IS my rear view mirror. I was in the car last night and it was rattling. When I dimmed the mirror I heard the familiar rattle really loud-like. Tried it a few more times..sure enough! If I tap the mirror i get the rattle....

When I take it in for the 7500. I'll have them fix that.

So should I trust the dealership to replace the rear view mirror....I mean can they screw that up??
