PZero Sidewall Bulge

As I get home from work today, my wife grabs me and says I need to come look at the car. Oh crap, I thought, she crashed it. Luckily, that wasn't the case... She takes me around to the driver's side and points to a bulge on the front tire and then points to the rear tire as well. Two tires and two bulges that must have happened within a few days of each other. So it looks like at least two new tires. These are 18" BTW.

I've had the car for just a little over a year (by about 10 days) and have about 11300 miles on it. I'm calling the dealer tomorrow, but can anyone tell me if they'll replace them under warranty or not? Should I replace all 4? How does everyone like their PS2's? Need a tire that'll protect the wheels a little better. My wife has trashed all 4 wheels so I guess it doesn't matter much anymore, but one day I will get new ones.

Thanks

Re: PZero Sidewall Bulge (ohmyearache)

I had the same issue on my 3 of the tires. Mine happened around 7k miles on the car, or about 6 monthes after I go it. The dealer said it was not covered under the warranty, so I purchased 4 replacements on tirerack, and had them mounted at NTB. On a side note i replaced the tires with Good Year F1 GS-D3's, which I find to be just as good. But PS2's are the best but also cost the most.

The bulges in the OEM Pirelli tires seems to be a common occurence with the 18" wheels. I have 17" ones and luckily have not had any problems as of yet. Since you lost two tires on the driver's side it would be best to get a new set of 4 since they have 13,000 miles on them. From what I've seen, 13K out of those tires is not too bad anyway. Unless the rear passenger side tire has the same amount of wear on it as the bulged front driver side tire, I wouldn't consider only swapping out two tires. A new set of 4 is just a better idea.

The Pirelli's definately lack in grip. If you go to tirerack.com you can get a better set for less, or the best (Michelin PS2's) for more money. A convenient feature at tirerack is the comparison function where you can see just how many other tires outperform the Pirelli's, which is really sad given their expensive price.

Good luck, and let us know how the new tires perform compared to the overrated P-Zeros!

I had the same thing on my rear right tire! That happend after only 5000 km...
My dealer said I must have hit something hard, like a pothole.
Couldnt remeber doing that but anyhow the dealer sent it back to Pirelli for an analysis. After 5 weeks I got my money back from the warranty! http://********************/smile/emcocktl.gif

I beg to differ; I have had two V70 R demos with 18" alloys. Drove both of them for a total of 12,000+ miles and never had an incident.

Depends on some luck but, mainly, on how often you check your tire pressure and how you drive.

At 11K they'll be junk soon anyways so you might as well replace all four with GOOD tires like the Michelin PS2s.
Great tire for the R http://********************/smile/emthup.gif , the Pirellis are about the worst

Just a quick follow-up...

Had my PS2's put on yesterday by my local Volvo dealer and all I can say is WOW!

What a huge difference over the PZero's. The ride seems so much smoother now and it's definitely quieter. Then there's the awesome grip... it's like I'm driving on rails. All that and there's some sidewall to protect the wheels too. I'm very happy.

Re: PZero Sidewall Bulge (ohmyearache)

welcome to the club. at about 15k miles i had one bulge. my tires were worn anyway...

i got toyo T1-S Proxes. Love them. Much cheaper than Ps2s. I got mine at Discoutn Tire for $800 out the door. everything. PS2s would have been at least $1000+

can't say if the PS2s or the Toyos are better, but I have no complaints.

i figure the way i drive, I'll burn through these Toyos in 10k miles easy, and th emoney I saved can go to the next set.

Re: PZero Sidewall Bulge (gaven)

My right front hit a pothole in the dark tonight (so easy to overdrive the damn low-beams), I swear this pothole was the start of a tunnel to frikkin China. I never heard such a loud, awful, heart-wrenching thud in my life. That hole was deep. My rim is perfectly fine, and somehow there is no bulge, but I still don't believe my luck, so first thing tomorrow I'm going to go to the garage and check again...

Care to share the wealth and sell us some at that price? It would be a great xmas present and I would be very grateful.
