Hi guys, so Im looking to replace the puddle lamps underneath the side mirror with some led bulbs. I looked online and am not sure how to get to the bulb. One thread says to pry the actual mirror off from the housing, the other thread says to tilt the mirror upward and then insert a flathead screwdriver into a tab and push? Once again none of these were specified for our cars, one was an a xc60 forum the other on a s80. I want to know how to do it without damaging anything. Thanks for the help! Also, do you know what bulb it needs? The manual doesn't say.

Removing the mirror glass is real easy:

1- Wedge a wooden or plastic implement in the gap between the mirror glass and the black frame of the mirror housing.
2- Carefully pry the mirror out of the base that it's snapped to. Said base is in the center of the mirror. This step is not tricky you just got to be careful.
3- Unplug the leads to the heating elements and set the glass safely away. The leads a bit delicate.

This, I think, should give you clear access to the puddle light.
When done replacing the bulb:

1- Plug the electrical leads back into the mirror
2- Snap it back into position. Try to push straight into the base and not at an angle so as, if possible, not change the mirror setting.
3- If the mirror setting does change a lot (more than one or two clicks) you can gently (yet forcefully) set it back.

I hope this helps. Let us know how it comes out (before and after pictures) and which LED bulb you've used.

no, i acutally never did. i wanted to do the plate lights and the puddle lamps in the mirrors. but after looking around some people said they had issues with puddle lamps and it causing error messages in the car because there was no resistance in led bulbs? this may explain why volvo didnt put leds in the puddle lamps for 2015 but just the plate lights. im not sure if anyone has done it but i couldnt find any threads on the forum so i didnt want to screw it up. also didnt want led plate lights but not puddle lamps. if anyone has done it please help

I will definitely take pictures and share once I get the license plate LEDs.

This morning I was curious about the puddle lamp type so I took the mirror off. BTW, you can just tilt it to one side (I did all the way out) and pry it out with your hands. This is better than using a tool since you get more feel for it.
Anyway, looks like the puddle light is tucked deep in there and the only way to get to it is by further taking the mirror cover (cap) off. I have no interest in doing that because I've already done it when I put in the silver (RD) caps and it's trickier than it looks. By that I mean it does not just snap back in and takes some work. I ended up breaking one of the tabs off the driver-side cover. It did not affect the fit but I don't want to mess with it and end up regretting it.
So, unless there's a another way to get to the light I'm leaving it alone.

OK, I got the license plate LED lights.
Very easy and quick to install. They have a heat sink on the back so I think they will last a long time.
The light is bright white. No hint of blue at all.
Here are some pictures. Sorry about the dirty car :(

When I saw the below pic, I thought your license plate number was 9, just 9. I was impressed.

Those look great, has anyone noted the size of the puddle lamp replacement bulbs?
Thank you.
Thanks.
I did take the puddle lamp out but forgot to measure it. I'm going to guess it's about 20mm excluding the base. It looked there was some extra room in there. I don't believe you have to get exactly the same size in an LED.

Almaz, did you replace the license plate bracket? The OEM bracket has studs and uses acorn nuts for mounting the plate, which don't work with plate frames that have covers for the hardware, unless you play around with some thin regular metric nuts and use washers to shim out the plate and cover.

Got the LEDs for the puddle lights last night and I installed today. Here are some pictures:

The LED lamp is longer but that's ok. There is enough space in there

First, I tilted the mirror and removed it by hand. Easier than with the mirror in place.

This is where you have to push the tab

You need to angle the screwdriver down and push hard. Passenger side was stubborn.

This is why you have to angle the screwdriver as mush as you can. Going straight will hit the top of the tab which is harder to push in. I gouged it as you can see but that is ok.

The rest is obvious and easy.
They look bright but have to wait till night time to see the difference.

I wanted to do the trunk and glove compartment but those bulbs are similar to the license plate ones which I only had two of. They are extremely easy to change.
The puddle lamp LEDs came in a set of 8 so I have 6 left that I have to find a use for :)

You're welcome guys :)
I've had that tiger plate on a handful of cars already :)

And yes, you do not need to remove the mirrors but it's easier if you do (at least it was for me). The passenger side was stubborn so removing the mirror makes it less frustrating.
Anyone has any idea where else I can use the extra LEDs?

You don't need to remove the mirror. I changed my side mirror bulbs with a slim screwdriver. The covers popped off quite easily for me. You just need to adjust the mirror to the maximum up position first. Just be careful to not scratch the bottom edge of the side mirror frame. Some painting tape helps with that.

any photos of the side mirror lights at night? and thanks for the "how to" of how to get to the bulb!

Almaz, thanks again for the pics and info on how to remove the puddle lights. Your tip on angling the screwdriver down was the key for me. I had tried multiple times in the past to release the clip without removing the mirror but never had any luck. Today I man'd up and removed the mirror so I could get the down angle with the screwdriver and with hardly and pressure the clip released. I had changed out all my other lights to LED's and had planned on changing the puddle lights but gave up after multiple failed attempts to release the clips. Looks so much better now especially since all the other lights that come on around the outside of the car are also LED, brighter too. Glad to finally be done.

Here are three pictures I took in the garage last night.
Those LEDs are a bit strange because they do give decent light and if you look straight at them they are bright white; yet they give out those blue dots. I've seen those dots on the pavement too so they are not due to garage floor.

reviving this thread as my passenger side mirror was wobbling as the glue wore off. I pried the mirror off its backing and I'm not sure which type of glue to use and will research. Need to inspect the mirror backing and see if the plate has loosened from the mechanism Almaz shows. I doubt I'll remove the entire mirror assembly like Almaz shows, I think mines just needs glue.
