On Monday night the check engine light turned off. I still took it to the dealer they did a software update and said it was just software. The Ro said code P0A7B68

Car is fix for a few days, thenbon Sunday the car didn't charge over night and it was connected. Driving it to brunch the electric range was all over the place it generated 3 miles and 1/4 full (keep in mind I have the extended range full is about 35 miles) ended up being a half mile. Now the check engine light is on. Message saying "Propulsion System Service Required". The drive range is a joke, i gotbit up to 8 miles and depleted 8 mikes of range in 1 mile. To add to the driveing experience I can feel jerkyness as the engine turns on and off. Gas mileage is less than 20 mpg.

Had any one experienced any thing like this?

I have had the Propulsion System light come on twice in two months 9n my new XC 90! Did they give you an answer to the problem?

The car clearly has some issues and that might be part of the problem, but I'd guess the range/mileage is based on driving habits? You aren't giving us any indication of how you are driving it... If you're driving it the way I would drive a 450hp Polestar Volvo then that will result in lower range/mileage.

Update... the xc60 has the turtle message "Acceleration Performance Reduced" I guess this is some sort of limp mode.

Lost some power on the highway the accelerator nearly all the way to the floor and overall a not so pleasant driving experience. When I got home went start the car to go to dinner is when the turtle light came on.

My car is being road sided to the dealer for repair.

I got the car back from the dealer today Volvo remoted in to reprogram modules. Driving it hope the performance on pure mode it struggles to maintain 75 mph when before i had no issue maintaining 80 mph and no trouble getting to it's top speed in electric at 87 mph.

Getting the car back on the repair order it had the following codes: ECM-P0A7B68 and BECM-P0A7F00.

Owner here for 3 months and this weekend same issues (propulsion = turtle = reduced peformance). I use an extension cord on a 110V to charge my Volvo XC60 Polestar because I have no other choice at the moment. Noticed, overnight my charge got disrupted and quit about 75%.

Next morning, propulsion service light appeared. Took picture of warning light with with my phone. Went to the grocery store, turned-off, came back and re-started and the light was still there. I drove home, turned-off the car, dropped off the groceries, and turn the car back on to drive to Volvo service. When I turned the car back on, the light was gone and performance was normal.

Service said do not use an extension cord to charge, that is what causes these software and performance errors. I don't know. I used an extension cord for the past 2 months and no problems before.

I did notice this problem did begin with the latest software update though....Will update here as necessary.

Purchased a 2022 XC60 Recharge Extended Range and just had the same issue in May and then again in the beginning of July - Propulsion then the car went into Turtle mode. The car's engine wouldn't turn on so it could only be driven in electric mode. Had the charging stop over night. The 1st time the car went to back to via a flat bad and the tech took 9 days to run through everything and said they reset and tested all the boards, etc and couldn't find anything. The 2nd time it got flat bed towed to the dealer. They said the couldn't find a fix to the software so they asked me to call Volvo US Customer Care. Looks like the Lemon Law is kicking in...

First time I saw the propulsion warning on July 12th, followed by the turtle and acceleration performance warnings. Then I tried downloading the 2.2 software and it didnt went through, asked me to sched a service which I did, scheduled on July 21st. I dont know what exactly worked. i tried turning on and off the car, resetting to factory, it seems to go away on its own. I am pretty sure it has something to do with my charging at home, even if I don’t use extensions. Yesterday I tried resetting while at my work parking lot and it went back to perfect condition—-was even able to download the apple carplay and all the apps I used like youtube music and spotify. But only for one day. Today I noticed it stopped charging in my garage at 50ish percent, went to the garage and saw the charger light is red. When I disconnected the charger and turned engine on, guess what, the propulsion warning is back. But the apple carplay, apps, are still there. So frustrating already. I bought this as brand new just last May 17, received it on May 26th.. It is a 2022 XC60 Recharge Extended range.

FYI...this software error happened to me twice after 3 months. Took it to service and they asked me about my charging methods. If you are using an extension cord to charge your hybrid (like I was), this is probably the root of the problem. Extension cords are the problem. You will need to plug in the charger directly to the outlet, either 120 or 240v. This should fix your issues "if" you are using an extension cord.

I recently paid an electrician to install a 120v within reach of my charging cord and have not experienced the issue again. If you are charging directly into an outlet and getting these issues, then it's a deeper technical issue Volvo needs to address quickly. I hope this helps!

So, I'll add to the chorus here - yesterday I got my check engine light and propulsion service message. Today I took it to the dealer. They cleared the CEL with a software upgrade, but then I got the turtle "acceleration performance reduced" message on the drive home. I tried "constant AWD" for the first time yesterday as I had been planning on picking up a small boat today and Volvo recommends that mode for towing. I again was in constant AWD when I got the turtle. It bumped me back into hybrid mode when I got the turtle on the highway. They gave me a loaner and they'll call with an update at some yet to be determined time. Pretty concerned reading this forum. XC 90 recharge extended range. I've had it for a little over 3 months and just over 4000 miles. If you asked me yesterday morning, I would have told you I love this car.

#22 ·
Oh boy, Jason. I think I'm done with this car. Your experience sounds alarmingly familiar. We are now on day 28 of a loaner while our four-month-old car sits in a bay at the dealership. Yesterday, I learned that they've found yet another problem---the IGM now needs to be replaced. So fat it's been the BDU, AC compressor, and now the IGM---which is all Greek to me, but seems to all lead back to the hybrid engine. The dealership has acknowledged that things have "snowballed." Meeting next week to seek a new car or a refund. THERE IS A PROBLEM HERE!

I got my XC60 T8 Polestar ER back yesterday everything seems to be operating as normal. I took it back because the range was all over the place half battery then coming back to a dead battery after parked for dinner and vice versa.

While the dealer had it they experienced a check engine light while they were doing the diag. most recent repair is the Hybrid Battery Heater, they also flushed the coolant system because they are attached, maybe? Hopefully this fixes the multiple check engine lights trips to the dealer. One more check engine light or reduction in power will be the last time for me!

#27 ·
Yep, agree!! Losing power on a crowded freeway is life -threatening! Not sure I can get beyond that...
New member here because I've been looking to understand what's going on with my new car. XC60 T8 with 600 miles on it. Got the Propulsion System error last Thursday, then a 12V error, then the turtle while on the highway. It took Volvo 12 hours to get me towed to the dealership. They charged it, reloaded software and gave it back. It just happened again and it's now back at the dealership. No clue as to what's going on.
Oh, my goodness. Your 12 hours beats my 2 hours, but inexcusable for any length of time. Your experience mirrors ours with a new XC 90. Ours has been in the shop now for 28 consecutive days! It's becoming clear that Volvo has a problem with these new cars! We are becoming increasingly sure that we don't want our car back.. Please stay in touch.

Hey folks, latest update for my XC60. Just got the call from our dealership and they said it's been fixed. According to them, there's a new software update they put on the car. It's not out yet according to them, but is coming shortly for this specific problem. They also said not to use an extension cord when charging the car. But I'm not sure why that would cause any issues with it. Aside from pulling tons of amps over long periods of time which might cause heat issues in the cord, I don't see how this is related.

I'll keep everyone updated once we get the car back. Crossing my fingers!!

#31 ·
Good news! Thanks for the update. I am still left with two concerns:
1. Every dealership seems to be doing something different to address similar problems. No one at my dealership has mentioned software. So far, they have replaced a BDU, the AC compressor, and now an IGM. I would feel better if every Volvo owner with these issues was reporting the same fix!

2. We HAVE NEVER used an extension cord to charge our car. This solution is tossed out frequently...

On day 32 of our new car in the shop...

#32 ·
I'm guessing they didn't know what the problem was at the dealership hence why everyone has a different solution. It's only day 2 of having the car back so I'm still kind of cautious in saying it's fixed, but if corporate has a solution then it should eventually make it's way to every dealer so it can be fixed. (IF!).

Hi everyone, 2022 xc90 recharge extended range — 4051 miles, I drive the car very carefully bc I’m obsessed w good electric mileage, we plug charger directly into wall outlet. Just got the “propulsion system service” light on tonight. For the first time ever, I got into the car and started it without unplugging the charger — the car felt a little weird right off the bat and I quickly realized I hadn’t unplugged so I turned it off, hopped out, unplugged normally, started it again — and that light came up. I turned off the car and turned it on again, light still there. I drove it about 13 miles (all electric range though — no gas) and all was fine — car felt totally normal. I’ll see what tomorrow brings…. But if this is a weird issue with charging — for me it may be related to repeated charging interruptions. With the super hot weather recently our power sort of dips frequently — so I’ll get notifications from the Volvo app repeatedly all day about charging interruptions (it always starts back up I guess when the power supply comes out of that fluctuation). Fortunately it charges continuously at night — which leads me to believe that the charging interruptions are caused by power supply demand and corresponding dips during the day. I plan to call the dealership tomorrow — I was going to wait — but it sounds like this issue will not go away on its own :( I have loved this car, too — so I hope a genuine fix is available.

Hey All,
I bought a brand new 2022 XC90 extended range back in Apr 2022 at Volvo SF. Today I got the check engine on with “propulsion system service required.” Tonight I’m getting notification that the car stopped charging. I’m charging it directly into an 110V outlet without any extension and getting these issues.
Called to Sacramento Volvo and scheduled an appt for Aug 9. I remember I dropped the vehicle back in May when check engine light came on but then they said it was a software issue, kept the car for 4-days and reset all the settings. Any idea how can I force the dealership to provide a loaner vehicle, as I didn’t buy the car at Sacramento Volvo but only do service here since I live here…?! Also, since I am the first owner, when can I use the lemon law in my case?

That’s exactly what my car has been doing! I chalked it up to my fluctuating hot weather electricity supply — bc it does not do this interrupted charge thing when I charge at work or anywhere else. As far as lemon laws — Google it for your state, they vary by state. The other thread on here about Volvo buyback is all for California, which may be helpful to review and be prepared. That’s what I’m doing. Calling the dealership for my car as soon as it opens today! Please keep us posted on your progress. I posted on Reddit about this issue and a guy that works for a dealership responded, “You’ll send it into shop, first time they will fix w a software update, second time the light comes on it will sit in the shop for months. It’s a known issues w these cars because Volvo rolled them out too quickly”. Im remaining hopeful Volvo will figure this out but he said that is what is happening at his dealership (I don’t know where he is from). Ugh.

this is the second time I will be dropping my vehicle at the dealership since I bought it. Here’s what I found for Californians:

California lemon law - What is considered a “reasonable” number of repair attempts depends on many factors.
  • You have taken the vehicle in for repair by the manufacturer or its agents:
    • Four or more times for the same problem and it still is not fixed, or
    • Two or more times for the same problem, if that problem is big enough to cause death or serious injury, and it still is not fixed, or
    • The vehicle has been out of service for repair for more than 30 days (the 30 days do not need to be in a row).

#41 ·
Your law is very similar to Idaho's. I would say the "death or serious injury" becomes a viable argument when the car goes into turtle mode on a busy road or freeway (as has been reported by various owners on this thread.) Standing by said freeway for 2-12 hours waiting for Volvo assistance could also be considered a threat of death or serious injury...

I am dismayed to say that the 2022 Volvo S60 Recharge T8 Extended Range I picked up this past Wednesday has less than 50 miles on it and is back at the dealership for service! This is less than 40 hours after I drove it off the lot. I have not even needed to charge it yet. Service says this has happened "a handful of times." They won't be able to get in touch with Volvo until Monday which officially means Volvo Service will have had my new car longer than me. Yes, the turtle also appeared but my car is SO NEW I thought that indicated a hazard in front of the car. Poorly done, Volvo.

#47 ·
For the 2nd time in a month I have had the Turtle warning appear. The first time I was driving on the highway and it was a dangerous situation. I charge my xc60 2022 extended range in my garage without an extension cord. It has about 3,000 miles And worked great for the first 2,000 or so. For the past month or so I have had charging and propulsion issues with the charging stopping mid-way. Has anyone contacted the DOT?

New update on my 2022 XC90 Recharge.
last week I dropped the vehicle because “propulsion system service req’d” check engine light came on. They have updated the software and assured that the issue has been fixed. A week later, tonight another issue came on, seeing reduced performance acceleration performance reduced warning came on. Any ideas folks? It’s the third time I will be dropping the car, I think it’s pretty much it for me and I want to drop it by Lemon Law.

Really disappointed this morning. We got our 2022 XC 90 back after 40 days in the shop and had a very constructive meeting with the dealership CEO. Drove it yesterday on a short freeway trip, and although I literally kept watching for an escape route on either side of the freeway, it drove beautifully. If you have followed this thread, you know of our harrowing turtle mode incident on the freeway when we were stranded for two hours. We WILL NOT put our grandkids in THIS car, but after my drive yesterday, I was thinking that maybe a different 2022 would work for us. What are the chances of getting a 2nd lemon, right? Then I read these new posts this morning...

NHTSA may be a good option for those of us experiencing turtle mode. Definitely a safety issue! Volvo Dispute Resolution is another option.

Please keep posting updates...
Very discouraging reading these posts. I bought a 2023 XC60 Recharge on August 6th. One week later I was unable to open the vehicle after a night of charging with either key or the Volvo app. i had to unlock the car with the key blade but could not remove the charger So couldn’t start the car. My dealer sent a technician to my house who removed and then put back fuse 39 to reset the TCAM. They drove the vehicle back to the dealership and upgraded the software to version 2.2. Car was delivered back to me on Wednesday and then on Saturday the 20th after a night of charging received the propulsion service error. I drove for a quick errand hoping it would go away but it never did. After reading this thread I called my dealer and they came back to my house to get the car and leave a loaner. Waiting to hear back what the resolution is. Car is great when working but 2 weeks and 2 serious problems is not a good ratio. Will update as I learn more. Doesn’t sound like there has been a consistent resolution.
Incredible!!!

I believe you are the first 2023 owner on this thread. Most others are 2022. I was hopeful they'd get this figured out with the 2023 models. Apparently not...

Purchased XC60 Recharge May 30, 2022. Received the Propulsion System error July 21; dealer performed software upgrade & referenced error code BECM-P065800. July 26, same error, but decided to drive to work and call into dealer when I got to the office; But, on the Highway I got an acceleration error and car slowed from 70 MPH to 45! Scary! Went directly to dealership. Error code BECM P065800 again and dealership opened case with Volvo. Volvo corp performed a vehicle takeover and updated software, 31483292. The car was good for a few weeks and I even traveled out of state. However, on 8/19 I noticed that it didn't take the charge despite being plugged in the and the plug was green-tried resetting the charge to no avail. I started the car and got the same propulsion error message. They also asked me about using an extension cord to charge it, but I never have. I am currently using the home 110V with a Chargepoint waiting to be installed. I am hearing that it's not all cars, but some, and it's related to a software issue and that Volvo and Google are working on it. I have a loaner vehicle for now and I would also advise looking up your State's lemon laws and keeping track of all service documents, calls, conversations, etc. I took a chance on a hybrid and Volvo and I'm now regretting that decision. I have never had issues like this and we have always had top reliability and performance from Acura's and Audi's over the years. I am VERY disappointed, especially given Volvo's (former) reputation and the cost of the vehicle. So, basically I've purchased an unreliable luxury vehicle!
