Problems with RTI in Sensus Cars

Just got my car back from my trusted dealer today. Have been having problems with RTI behaving off and on for the past few months. It finally totally quit on the way to a service appointment at the dealership yesterday. FWIW, the car is a 2018 S90 with Sensus (naturally). Was told by the dealer they ended up contacting Volvo about the problem. Volvo told the dealer tech that Volvo was aware of the problem, but there was no fix as of yet, just be in touch.

Basically, the nav system works normally but the RTI doesn't show any indication of upcoming traffic, no rerouting, no nothing. The green, yellow or red lines are non existent.

Just FWIW. Hadn't seen a thread about this.

I wish automakers would embrace more opensource solutions. I bet this forum would be the new github for Volvo software fixes and it wouldn't cost them anything. It sounds like something is interfering with the trafficLayer from Here. That it is intermittent is odd. I'm off tomorrow, but maybe I'll try to see if it's universally down, or vehicle specific glitches.

Yeah. It originally went down on me the first week in January. Off for about a month. Made an appointment with your York store to look at it, but the RTI came back up about 3 days before the appointment. So I cancelled. And the rest is history with it going back down on the 31st.

Same for me. All ok on Saturday but missing on Monday 31st March.
I've rebooted Sensus, turned off and on RTTI. No change.
I started a chat with Volvo today and they were not great. Suggested I took it to my dealer to have it 'Diagnosed'. Despite me saying there is nothing wrong with the car.

But I did visit the dealer at lunchtime and they did some checks and confirmed there is nothing wrong with the car. It's just not receiving RTTI data.

Somebody needs to reboot the RTTI Server!

Further problems this morning but probably unrelated.
The 'World' icon disappeared from the display indicating it had lost the Internet connection.
Yesterday, the workshop connected the car to their workshop wifi to eliminate any Vodafone Sim problems. It didn't fix it so they set it back to the onboard Sim.
Continued yesterday with the World icon in the display but no RTTI being received.
Now the World icon is missing so I moved the car connection to a Tethered link to my iPhone. This reinstates the World icon but still no RTTI.
So two problems to fix?

volvo replied - answer to me via email after prolonged phone hold and no answer on chat
please have it diagnosed by volvo dealer
I think I am concluding - BS and poor customer service

Based on this, it sounds more like a recent update to the software, not the supplier.
The Volvo Cars app also removed calendar integration. If I had a location saved in an appointment, it used to show that in the app. It was so easy to hit "Send to Car."

Volvo - removes the existing working feature. Fix it as bug or release as new feature..

It's still out here in the US...

Well, Volvo says it's their partner's back-end system that is malfunctioning, and they also give the name: Inrix. Googling that gives me a snippet of an article but it is limited to US only so I can't read it fully:

"Transportation data and analytics company INRIX will be moving out of Kirkland after nearly two decades. INRIX CEO Bryan Mistele posted on X Friday, stating the company is moving due to a nearby “homeless hotel.” However, the city called the building “permanent supportive housing” in an email to KIRO 7 and MyNorthwest." (dated on 4 Mar 2025)

I didn't note the actual date RTTI stopped working for me, but it's quite close to that article date? I do hope they were not struck by that relocation (did it really happen?) and that they would not run their own data center at their office premises.

The German three are using HERE for their RTTI, as far as I know, so they are not affected.

Correct - it's working just fine in German cars. My BMW has been completely unaffected by this. I just called Volvo because my On Call subscription expired early for some reason, and the woman I spoke to just gave me a canned answer as to the traffic and said they are unaffected. I asked for a credit or something, and she was just silent.

I just heard there was a recall for cameras on 2021-2025 vehicles...finally after my XC60 was a mess. That was the only good thing about that car: it has full-screen Google maps. I got stuck in major traffic due to the Sensus outage. I hate keeping my phone plugged in because it constantly disconnects, and the map is much smaller in Google maps too. More people should complain to Volvo about the outage.

Same problem with my Volvo V90CC 2019. It stopped working sometimes in the beginning of April. Called VOC and they told me to go to Volvo dealership to update software, but there they told me to install new map update via USB-stick. I did so, but it didn’t fix the issue. I contacted Volvo again via chat two weeks ago and was told that this was a known problem and that issue was related to Volvos provider of traffic information. I asked for a timeline for when it is supposed to be fixed, but they had no idea. Sent an email yesterday again for further info. Waiting for the reply. I am in Norway.

My 2023 XC 90 started having this problem on and off about 2 months ago but just for short periods. Now no traffic info in the last week. I can run Google maps off my phone, but that works only as long as the phone has service. Where I live there are areas with minimal or no service I'm in central coast California, US. I appreciate getting info on this issue.

I finally got a reply from my local Volvo dealer after sending them 3 emails. Now they are telling me that Volvos 2g provider has cancelled the contract, and that’s what is causing the issue. The only problem in that explanation is that the car is equipped with 4g modem and that’s how it receives RTTI data…. I kindly asked them to have a more serious look into this matter 🙂

This is something I would never have expected from Volvo. The majority of Volvo service centers and dealers seem to have no real understanding of the issue, and are instead advising customers to reboot their cars, disconnect the battery, and suggest other similarly unhelpful actions. Let’s be clear: this issue has nothing to do with 2G, 4G, or any kind of cellular connectivity. The navigation system receives its data either through the car’s built-in modem (which is not the one used for server communication) or through a paired phone acting as a hotspot. It’s disappointing to see such a lack of technical insight on a problem that clearly requires a more informed response.
