Power tailgate/liftgate/hatch groaning

So the power tailgate (hatch) on my wife's 2012 XC60 (out of warranty) has begun to groan. Perusing the online parts sites shows a variety of items including the powered left and right struts and a power tailgate pulldown motor in the hatch itself. It also appears there could be a controller and MAYBE even some hydraulic stuff in play here (can't quite tell).

I am a pretty competent DIYer, but don't want to just start throwing (expensive) parts at it. Any tips on where to start with this one? Has anyone done this job or had it done by a dealer (and if the latter, any idea what they replaced)?

Thanks!

I have a 2011.5 and the groan from the liftgate was horrible!! I sprayed the cylinder rod a couple times and no help. Then I sprayed the pivot that is attached to the liftgate itself... No more noise!!

There are no parts to lubricate on the lift cylinders themselves, except for the ball and socket connections at each end. These can be lubricated with silicone spray without removing anything from the vehicle.

with WD-40 expect it to return. The mount of lubrication in WD-40 is miniscule. I am only posting this as you could have it return and assume that something else is the problem. I have had untold numbers of cars with noisy door hinges or sticking hood latches where the owner sprayed WD-40 on the parts and the issue got much worse. Like door being hard to move once unlatched. The solvents in the WD-40 will wash away the lube in the part but do little to replace what was rinsed away. WD-40 makes a gel spray grease. It is in a black and gray can and has spray and stay gel lubricant on label. It sprays as liquid and the propellant dries and leaves gel grease that hangs around. Wurth makes a great product called HHS 2000 and it wonderful but hard to find and $20 for a can. The Wd-40 gel stuff is very close and is at Lowes and Home Depots around me for $7-8 range.

I sprayed some T9 Boeshield into the lift cylinders and the noise went away. Each side is roughly $200 a cylinder so I thought I'd try that before spending some cash. Boeing makes the stuff, most people use it as a bike chain lube.
