Power and Sound of a High Flow Cat vs No Cat - (both straight piped after downpipe)

anyone know how much quieter a 3in high flow catted downpipe with no muffler/resonator is vs a 3in straight pipe turbo back?

also do you lose HP/TQ with a high flow cat vs a full straight pipe setup on a turbo car? (proof would be good)

It just so happens I do. I had a 3" full exhaust and 3" catless OBX DP on my car early last year. It was much too loud for my tastes. I had a 3" magnaflow cat left over from my POS Phuzzy downpipe that always caused engine codes, so I cut it out and had it welded into the OBX. It really did not make an appreciable reduction in volume. I could tell, but certainly not as much as adding a resonator or something.

I didn't have a before-and-after dyno session, but I doubt it cost more than 10 HP, I couldn't feel any difference.

What are you trying to do? Quiet your exhaust? I also added a Pacesetter resonated tip that quieted it more than the cat. Sound deadening above the muffler and extending the tip past the bumper also helped.

The cat made the biggest difference in odor, my exhaust was pretty awful before the cat.

Why are you worried about sound level with / without a CAT if you don't have a resonator or muffler? The difference adding a CAT will be negligible when the car already sounds like a RICE'r.
I've run my VR with and without a CAT (currently running a Vibrant 3" HO Race CAT) with a 3" X 18" Resonator and TME muffler, and the noise level WITH the CAT is noticeably quieter and has a more refined sound. The CAT also helps reduce unwanted exhaust odor.
Power / flow with or without the CAT is exactly the same (1440 kg/h)

This CAT is highly recommended.

This is what made me put a cat back in. Couldn't bear the odor.

Well I can't say cuz I have my resonator and muffler on my IPD system but it did get louder without the cat. Also the sound at 3k+ is very different and sounds like absolute sex I love it so much.

It sounded quieter and more pressured with the cat

I'm fully straight piped right now. I did it for fun, it sounds great esp at WOT but the cold starts are just too damn loud. I can go back to my BORLA XR-1 setup which is excellent or keep it straight piped and add a high flow cat. just wanted some facts or if there will be a significant power loss or not. Getting rid of the odor would be a good thing.

I talked to 8Eight Fab since I'm getting him downpipe looks like he plans on doing a dyno run with his catless downpipe and the high flow cat so we'll see whats up hopefully soon!

There won't be a power loss if you buy the right CAT. The Borla XR-1 is a nice muffler.
