Hi,

Just curious if anyone knows if non dealers can apply the polestar software update, My local dealer doesn't seem to want to polestar upgrade the car, claiming they can't, I've already checked the software and it is listed for my car in VIDA, however...

I know the service software update only works for dealers, tried, declined got charged, but for less than a quid I thought it was worth a gamble, now the polestar upgrade is a bit pricey I don't want to pay for the software to find I've just lost of a lot of money...

Anyone here applied the upgrade themselves using VIDA?

Many thanks!

Where are you from? In my zone (Spain) Polestar is not yet available (waiting for certification) and nobody installs it. In Portugal they do, but not to my car as it was sold in Spain.

I'm based in the UK and have VIDA access, I order software via a dealer that then gets put onto our VIDA sub. Dealer themselves don't know if it will work but tell me I will get charged for the software if it works or not, since our VIDA is linked to a dealer.

I would still be paying Volvo for the software, just without the dealer, I guess its a bit of an odd situation to try.

If I had a manual I would be looking at RICA, but since I have an auto i'm very interested in the 'optimised' gearbox

So...

Did you ever managed to do this?

I am too still looking for a way to install the Polestar software outside the dealer.

In my case it is the sw part number 31459915 for a 2017 XC90 T6 (SPA Platform, so VIDA subscription only with a VOE Ethernet adaptor).

I don´t mind buying from a dealer, but I am too far to go to one to have it installed at their premisses. I have a working VIDA setup and can install the software. But VIDA would not allow me buy that specific one directly as a DIYer...

So, the current alternative I am pursuing is to be able to buy at a dealer but install it myself (remotely).

Would anyone have any experience or information if that would be possible, or how to go about it?

TIA.
Regards,
Daniel

Hello all,

Reviving this post, can any one confirm if non-dealer can apply the Polestar upgrade?

I have an additional complexity as I am in Brazil and apparently Polestar Performance Optimisation. Excl. BE, BR, ES, FR, IT, KR, NO...

At my dealer (here in Brazil) I was told it wasn't available to my car (VIN)... Does anyone know a way around this?

That being it is the same car as the one in countries which get to install the upgrade...

Thanks for any help.
Regards.

Why not contact hiltontuning.com . They can tune the ecu without anything from Volvo. His tunes can get you Polestar performance or more depending on your mods.

Depends on your year, sometime in 2019 ECM changed to new Denso with Freescale processor, it has not been "cracked" for tuning yet. I'm waiting for Rob to let me know when it's been figured out...

The Polestar upgrade is more like a "flag" in the car, they do load software when you get it, not sure if it's a Total Upgrade at the time they do it, but from then on, when software updates come out, the "Polestar" tuning is updated. It might be just bug fixes, but one example is the AWD tuning and changing the "Dynamic" drive mode to "Polestar" was an update after I had the Polestar tune installed. For that reason getting it on a non-authorized country coded car may be almost impossible. You could certainly dive into maybe changing country on the car with VDash, and then who can load the software given you are then enabled for Polestar, can a dealer do that...

It is a 2017 XC90 T6 Inscription

That is an interesting approach! However I am not versed in VDash....

Any suggestions on how to get educated on that?

Ahh ok 2017, yes check out Tuning Perfection

VDash, check out: D5T5.com - All for your Volvo I know there is some ability to change the country code on your car, don't know the implications of that though. Worth asking them direct and I think they will then refer you to one of their dealers in your country.

Not yet...

In my case, however, I believe I am one step further than you as my car is BR designated (Brazil) and the Polestar Optimization, although available for my car/engine (XC90 2017 T6, engine B4204T27) it is not authorized by Volvo to be installed in Brazilian cars, probably due to some kind of certification as well.

But I explored a few options further...

In October accessed my car through VIDA (I purchased a 3 day full client subscription) and could see the Polestar Performance Optimization as a software listed for my car on the software list (it showed up as "Perf. opt. b4204t27+ appl", part number 31459915, size 289kB). I tried to order it but the purchasing system didn't allow me to go on with the purchase. When I tried it I got a message: "Software not found - The item you are trying to order is not available. Confirm the part number and create a help request referencing the part number that you are trying to order"

Contacting VIDA support, they told me the sw could only be purchased from Volvo and installed by registered US dealers (supposedly due to an agreement between Volvo and the dealership network). So this was a dead end there already...

Last weekend I purchased another VIDA full subscription for a few days and now the same software does not even appear in my list of possible downloads / installations... I even inserted the sw part number manually but got a message saying "105 - Client is not authorized to access PIE server"... deader end...

So, I found out that, in Europe, you can register and use the VIDA client software if you are an independent shop. There, you buy the software part number from the dealer and the indie install it. So, I thought, I would register as an indie (through a VPN?) and order from a local dealer... However you need a VAT tax code and actually have some other business actual registrations to do it... so... although I was still willing, it involved more steps and investments...

Also, even if I went that way, I would still need to buy the software from a dealer. The problem is, when buying from a dealer he checks my car's VIN and sees that is BR registered and that he cannot install that sw in my car. So he is likely not to sell it to me, even if he can buy it from Volvo for my VIN... Likely, dead end here too...

I also tried contact with a US dealer directly and gave him my VIN. This one told me he would sell and install it for me, but I would have to bring the car in their shop... which is kind of a long trip, since I am in Brazil... dead end...

or is it?

I recently found a way that seems to be possible to connect the car remotely to VIDA... So, if I find a US dealer friendly enough to install the sw in my VIN AND make an unorthodox long distance connection to my car, there might be game!

The other option might be the path Power6 is exploring, which seems to be a fantastic overall effort which could open this and other possibilities!

Can you register a vida account for me?

It would be possible to set up a VPN on an IP address that isn't registered to a hosting or cloud provider, and have someone in the USA run an account with VIDA. Then they can remote into your system while it's VPN connected so it looks like it's in the USA and do the software stuff required... That is the quickest way around Volvo's system.

@MoRf3uS Sorry, for some reason I thought I was replying to stead... This is why I need to stop using my phone for everything. Hence why I thought you were in the UK. FML. So you live in Cali but you have a car from where? North American market?

#23 ·
This is for the US market... so you if you are in the states, and this is your vehicle, you should be able to do it. Polestar shows it's available for the last 10 years or so in the US market

Just wanted to reiterate a previous suggestion... Why not just have a 3rd party tune your car like Hilton tuning. You would get better performance and cost less... You can then just put the Polestar badge on since you have the performance of Polestar. I know it's not "Polestar" but it's the same thing they are basically doing...

#30 ·
I have looked into that as well... But there is an appeal to the challenge of the more difficult option...

Also, one of the more distinguishing features of the Polestar Upgrade is the remapping of the TCM (Transmission) ,which I am not sure if an external tunning/mapping will do...

#31 ·
Yeah, one could be satisfied with either thing, or perhaps none at all ha, but they aren't the same. The AWD and TCM tuning to me, are essential part of the Polestar tune which you don't get anywhere else. A little easier choice for me, I got the 2019-up ECM, no tunes for that and not likely any time soon.

I think we are going to figure this out...we don't need no VIDA ;-)

I hope so, I’ve been dying to get the Polestar map for my 2018 XC60 T8 but I’ve run out of ideas. When I was visiting my parents in Sweden I went to a few aftermarket tuners and none of them could do anything since the ECM hasn’t been cracked yet.

Volvo there said they could only help me if my car was brought there.. from California lol

I really hope we can all figure this out.

I hate to break it for you but it really does not worth the effort because it will cost you more.
I'm living in CA and I have 2019 S60 T5. I had VIDA subscription for 3 days costs around $85. Polestar upgrade shows up in the software section but it costs $1200 to download and install it there is no way around it and there are no discounts or coupons on VIDA when purchasing any software. Only total upgrades are free.
So, you will end up around $1285 in total + the VOE cable. The most expensive offer I had was $1100 including the whole package and work. Some dealers have discount coupons and you can get it for $900.
VDASH is useless unless you have premium account 400 euro / year. but still does not work for SPA volvo's because you have to get the CEM and ECM pins codes firsts before attempting any change (configuration, tuning and etc.) Getting the code is not easy and you will need pull out the ECM, open it and connect to some chip reader. VDASH claimed that they could get the pin code from VIDA logs but it does not work anymore. I think Volvo noticed this and encrypted the logs or they no longer print the info in the logs.

Hi, appricate this is a really old thread now and I honestly forgot I posted it years ago.

If it helps anyone.

In short, I did apply the polestar optimisation myself via VIDA buying from a dealer this was pre 2021, however at some point Volvo blocked independants installing the software, you can still order it but it no longer installs. (This is in the UK, unsure of other markets, we had it confirmed by Volvo techinical that we could no longer apply polestar software, however we could remove it!)

I can also confirm you can no longer get the ECM pin from vida logs from ECM Upgrades/Reloads (this was how we used to get them)

Only main dealers can apply the service 2.0 update for the P3 platform, yet anyone can buy it, I worked at an indepedant and we could buy it all day long but it would refuse to install, much like the polestar software.

Its a real shame volvo make it so difficult with software, our other is not a volvo and the first over the air update just amazed me, no cost, no dealer required, free updates long beyond the warranty period. Can even buy a performance upgrade from the car app!

That's how it worked for us, with one car we didn't know what was happening and ended up getting charged 3 times!

Got refunded (after a while)

If your using vida outside of the UK that let's you buy with a credit card maybe its different, they may of changed the policy now and I'm no longer working in a garage to find out.

If you get the part number from the polestar model selector site and ask a dealer how much to install and just give them the number I would of thought they would do it for you but at your own risk if it doesn't take it.

I did loose money trying to install the rtti upgrade, car took it but didn't add it in 🙁

North America is different from the ROW (Rest of World) for ordering software in VIDA. In NA you can sign up at Volvotechninfo, subscribe to VIDA and order software for the car. But not allowed to order Polestar Optimisation software. In the ROW, you can get VIDA as an indepenent shop, you can only order software by ordering it through a dealer. Since the dealer can order Polestar, they can order for you, and you could install it on your own through VIDA, but it sounds like that loophole has been closed ;-)

Stead there are still ways to get the PINs. Personally what I do is capture the install with Wireshark, my software OrBit will parse the capture file for security access and crack PINs from pcapng files.
