Plastic Wheel Bolt Covers?

Hey all,

First time swapping to winter tires on my own in the new car (last year the tire show that installed them did it for me).

I noticed that our cars have plastic imitation chrome covers that go over the rather weird looking hollow tipped wheel bolts. I've never seen anything like it before.

Anyway, while developing my technique to remove them with a needle nosed set of pliers, I may have damaged a few of them.

Does anyone know what I search for if I want to get a replacement set? Are they a standard Volvo part number?

Appreciate any suggestions!

Sorry I don’t have an answer, but I had the same issue you did and used a screwdriver to pop them out. I noticed when I looked in the manual it appeared that there should be some sort of tool that sides over the sides and allows them to be pulled straight out, however I couldn’t locate that tool. Does anyone know where it should be located? I would assume near the jack, but I didn’t see it.

You can buy sets of 4 from Volvo, come in matching colors.

My car came with 2 tools for these, one in glovebox in the upper slot where the manuals are.
And second in trunk, stuck in one of the molded forms of the back foam.

Yours didn't have any?

U Shaped Plastic Thingy

Ah yes, the U shaped plastic thingy! That's what you should use to get the caps off. If you're near me in Mechanicsburg I always keep extras if your car is missing it. Cars with locking wheel lugs come with two so I keep the spares when I seem em as people throw them out if they don't know what it's for... That's why I made the video in the link above.

From the factory the tool comes in the bag with the caps, so it could be wherever the tech/sales person put it... if they didn't throw it out themselves...

I'm not convinced it is a problem. These plastic covers look the part (I never noticed until I tried to take the wheels off) and they will never, ever rust. If they need replacement they are relatively cheap!

Just need to figure out how to do it right. Looks like I may need to find my "u-shaped plastic thingy"

So, I did some googling, and I think I found my answer.

A kit of 20x Volvo original equipment faux chrome plastic bolt covers including a little tweezer for removal (looks different than the "U Shaped Thingy") is available here for $29.

(The link looks like it should be for something else, but the actual product on that page is the kit of caps)

The cap remover is probably in your trunk - on one of my cars it was clipped on to the end of the lug wrench. Granted, they're pretty flimsy so I bought a couple from Amazon - Audi uses the same things.

I think it was done for styling purposes so that a single part could be used for the lug nuts. With the plastic caps, Volvo can make it match the wheels. For the R Design, the caps are black.

I think either black or "chrome" work with my summer wheels, as they are that black/machined look.

I put my winters on the 18's the car came with, which are that classic silver wheel color. The "chrome" colored caps don't match them perfectly, but don't look bad either.

Ya'll need to buy a Ford... their lugs are the absolute worst. Many of them have a shiny metal cover molded over the actual lug... they don't fit any normal wrench just right (including the one in the one with the spare), and even the techs have to buy plastic coated sockets to avoid damaging them... If you use normal tools at the very best you mar the finish. Sometimes you spin the metal cover effectively ruining the lug, and making it more difficult to get off. I'll take plastic covers any day!

These lug-bolt caps came on my 2015.5 XC70. I found it terribly frustrating removing the wheel to work on brakes. I bought my XC70 used, and didn't find the extractor tool. I ended up buying a thin-walled 24mm socket wrench tip, and it does an OK job removing the caps. I pity the poor fool with a flat tire on the side of the highway trying to pull those damn caps off without the proper knowhow and tool. What makes it so difficult is that there's only about 1.5mm clearance around the cap to insert a tool. The tire change system is an embarrassment to Volvo designers, and the scissors jack with a single side lift-point a dangerous abandonment of safety standards.

IMHO, in a pinch you can probably stick a key in between and pry them off. I'd be worried about scratching the wheels, but that might not be th etop priority if you are stuck on the side of the road.

If every car ships with a "U shaped thingy" though, I guess it is just a matter of being aware of what is in your car :p

The cap removal tool was in the foam thing in the trunk with the spare tire and jack tools in our XC90. I couldn’t find it in my V90 and wound up buying a few for a couple bucks each.
