All the Volvo Pegasus wheels (17", 18") are 8" wide. The wheels weights are ~25lbs and ~28lbs for 17" and 18", respectively.

In your example, a standard V70 shouldn't have any major issues running Pegasus wheels - just make sure to retain the same overall diameter. With the S40/V50 models, you will need hubcentric rings to use the Pegasus wheels. I hope this helps!

These all seem to be S60 17x7.5 wheels that could fit on S40/V50 with hubcentric rings (perhaps with steering limiters if needed with AWD).
The 8 inches on the Pegasus might be a bit wide for 46 mm offset. Of course the 225 width tire remains the same whether it's 7.5 or 8 inches of wheel. I'm not sure how the fitment issue changes with 17x7.5 versus 17x8 with the same 225 mm tire. (I want 225/45 to stay with the same overall diameter)

The Evolve R5 wheel looks the best IMO with Pegasus second best (I like the sporty 5 spoke thing), and weighs the least. Its offset is a bit scarey, though, at 42 mm, although NYCS40 has had no problems with th R5. And tirerack has alternative wheels for V50 even down to 40 mm offset.

If 43 is real, that would mean, incidentally, that Volvo "okays" a change in scrub radius of 6 mm for the S60 / V70.

9.9 kg is a healthy, reasonable 22 pounds, which is what I remember Sculptor to be. Of course a wider tire means a heavier tire. I'm surprised the Pegasus wheel, which is supposed to be the sporty thing, is actually heavier than these other wheels.

On the issue of 8 versus 7.5 inches, a wheel/tire calculator such as

shows that the wheel is WIDER than the tire if I go with 225 mm! Does anyone know if 17x8 is too much for 225 mm? I think Tirerack had something that says 17x7.5 was best suited for 225, but 18x7.5 was best suited for 215. So that doesn't tell me about 17x8 with 225. (I couldn't find the tirerack exact webpage before writing this).

I am not sure (as in I don't have an Otrera wheel next to me in the hotel room

How can that be? a 225 tire is 8.86 inches wide and an 8 inch wheel is, um, 8 inches...

The Peg is made for the R which has 300hp and is made to corner hard. You think Volvo would underengineer it?

On the subject of rim vs tire widths, have found that TireRack's recommended sizes are spot-on. Their "acceptable" (or whatever second-tier rank) all look funny, either pinched or fat. I personally avoid them, which is what I think TR is trying to tell us.

Hi. I just looked at the S60 technical specs on the normal Volvo website. The wheels they offer in 17x7.5 are not the same as I found on autowebaccessories.com. The Volvo recent S60 17x7.5 wheels are

Orestes
Orpheus

then the 17x8 Pegasus (there are other 18 and 16 inch wheels).

No mention of half the ones I have in the list from autowebaccessories.com.

Since Thor is 49 mm, I'm guessing Orestes and Orpheus are all 49 mm offset.

I assume the 17x8 Pegasus is 46 mm, just like the 18x8 Pegasus.

So so far it seems that Volvo does NOT recommend a 6 mm offset shift.
The S60R has 46 mm Pegasus wheel. So either they do recommend a 3 mm offset shift, or else the S60 suspension's scrub radius and steering geometry are so different that they have a different offset wheel. Indeed, the R uses only Pegasus. The non-R versions use only non-Pegasus.

Does anyone have an opinion on whether the 3 mm offset shift in S60 wheel represents a scrub radius shift, or a major steering geometry shift? (maybe I should post on the R forum).

I see your point! I have a feeling the so-called "Tire /w Wheel Inboard inrease" on that website is a misnomer, and it really simply means the inboard addition of the tire width. UKMatt is right. Naturally, going from 205 mm to 225 mm means 10 mm wider tire per side. Changing from 7 to 8 inches means 12.7 mm wider per side on the wheel, but really it's the tire width I would think that causes fitment problems. Come to think of it, people talk about fitment based on wheel width and offset change. Seems like they should really talk about fitment based on tire width and offset change.

I have no idea... I was going to say that perhaps the 4C suspension in the R makes a difference but you can get 4C as an option on the S60 T5 and it still comes with the Orpheus wheels...

I think it's the former - scrub radius. By reducing the offset, the (negative) scrub radius is also reduced. This benefits the R by reducing torque steer, which is larger in this higher-HP model. The difference from "stock" is quite small so overall it's just a tweak.

I've got an idea how to measure the scrub.

- Find a flat smooth spot and lightly sand a small area.
- Park a front wheel on it with the steering dead straight.
- Turn the steering a slight amount each direction (so the wheel turns maybe +-10 degrees)
- Roll the wheel gently off the sand (or even jack the car)

If the scrub were zero, for a small arc the wheel will turn in a perfect circle close to the contact patch and you'll see a concentric pattern that "closes" all the way around.

If the scrub is positive, you'll see an "open" circle, the center portion would be somewhat empty. The open part of the C will point inward, and (I think) the radius traced by the center patch will equal the scrub.

If the scrub is negative, the same thing will happen but the open part of the C will point outward.

What do you think? If sand doesn't work I guess you could try inking the tire, or something like that.

I might try it myself on the snow we're supposed to get this weekend.

Sculptor and other normal V50 wheels are 22 pounds from what I know. Pegasus is 25. Other S60 wheels (Thor) are 22 pounds. Pegasus has some advantages, but weight is not one. Does anyone have a feel for how much 3 pounds extra unsprung weight in a rotational mass might have? I guess Volution and other wheels are even more...

 

Does the 46nm offset on the Peg’s have anything to do with the big Brembo brakes that live underneath them?
