Parking Brake Service Required message

Hi,

I have had a message on my my dash Parking Brake Service Required on my 2018 XC90 and finally took it to the dealer to diagnose. Their write up said they upgraded the software (vague, no details).

When I left the dealership the message popped back up immediately. Clearly they didn’t fix it but otherwise the car drives fine but with the message it seems to disable the use of the cruise control. I really don’t think the dealership tested it and did the bare minimum to get it out the door.

Any thoughts on how to DIY fix this? The easiest solution is to go back to the dealer but my confidence level is pretty low at this point for them to fix it. I haven’t seen any clear resolution to this online. Any thoughts or help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Have you ever spilled any Coffee or sugery drinks on the console?
I've found more than one case where that message came on when the console's wiring connectors were contaminated by foreign liquids.
There's a big wire connector on each side near the front.
Pull the front console side panels off and have a look.

I had same issue back in June, it started off intermittently and then got pretty consistent. They said it was a software issue and so updated the software. It came back a week later, then went away on it's own. And it's come back about 3 more times in last 3 months but not in about a month. I've been meaning to take it in, but getting an appointment at dealership is pretty hard right now, they're booked out 6-8 weeks. Looked at other dealership but further away and not many openings either.

The strange thing is that before I took it in, it was just parking brake light. After they updated the software, it was a Christmas tree of parking brake, ABS, and traction control. But same scenario, pops up on startup, car drives normally other than no cruise, then lights just go away on their own maybe 15 minutes later.

So… parking brake actuator is toast and dealer says it is sending a constant open signal to the parking brake control module. The dealer wants $2,200 to replace the parking brake actuator and the control module. Seems extremely high since the actuator module I found online is like $233 (part 31400426).

Seems suspect to say the least. Also quoted $750 for a rear wheel hub that they claim they didn’t strip out the threads on a recent service but they’ve been the only ones to work on the vehicle. I am at about 60k miles so out of warranty. I think it’s time to start doing the maintenance myself. I’m just shocked at these quoted prices.

Diagnosis…. I wonder if it's better to replace the parking brake actuator or try to use VIDA to see if I can code out and just disable the parking brake module altogether… $2200 for dealer material and labor quoted for this.

Thanks Tech. I ordered a replacement actuator unit and will give it a shot! [emoji106]

Replaced the parking brake motor and no change. The original motor measured about 2.1 ohms of resistance and the new one a about 1.4 ohms. I tested the original unit with a 9v battery and sure enough it worked. While I had the connector off I was measuring voltage on the connector and with a helper hitting the parking brake button saw no voltage being transmitted to the motor. On the dash I have a flashing Park indicator. Im thinking the shop must have disabled something in the computer, it needs some sort of reset, potential computer to wheel wiring issue, or maybe a failure with the computer altogether. Will keep checking.

I had this about a year ago - dealer changed out the module, and then changed out both rear calipers, and then - after several days, they said they had found a corroded connection. Now I'm out of warrantee and the message is back - i tried reseating the connector at each caliper with no change - not sure where to look next.

For me it was the dealer having to replace the BCM module. I really doubted it and spent a few days trying to troubleshoot myself using VIDA, and VDASH but kept getting faults. I sucked it up and took it back to the dealer and been good for a couple months now.

Having this problem now too. I've checked all the wiring to both wheels and it's all sound.

In my case I'm getting the "parking brake service required" message and cannot use the cruise control. The parking brake itself is not engaged (nor can I engage it).

Any ideas as to what the next diagnostic step should be?

I totally agree with your comment, what the dealer has done is that they only use the computer to locate the problem, but unwilling to really check the wires. All they told me is to replace the whole harness. What I would like to see is that they could provide all the choices on the table. I am willing to take the risk that the repair could fail in the future but they did not want to go this direction.

I do recall a TJ for the S90 where a problem with chaffing of the harness had been identified and a repair method suggested but that would be up to them to determine whether or not that is your issue. I hope for your sake they know how to access and apply TJ's when valid.

Depending on where the damage is, and I would presume an open circuit/broken wires, could make it impractical to make a repair. Where there is flexing from suspension movement the harness is contained within a heavy rubberized jacket that could be a challenge to repair and seal back up to original standards.

Thank you for the information, I am OK with replacing the whole harness, but that is my last solution, I would like to see the dealer try to solve the problem in a cost-effective way, like post #20. if there is no success, then replace the harness. What they did was just plug in the computer to locate the problem then told me replacing the harness was the only solution.
I am disappointed in their effort and attitude to fix the problem and think on behalf of the customers.
I bought the extended warranty for this kind of issue and they only came just 3 months after the extended warranty.

Had the same issue in July. I was on a road trip with my family and a week before coming back I started to have issues to release the brake. After a couple of tries it did release but the message " Parking brake service required " started to display.
One day I again tried to release the brake but it didn't and it took a long while and a big amount of tries to release it. After that I stopped using it and after coming back I got it checked at the dealer. The culprit was that the wire coming from the parking brake switch had cut off.
Paid 220 € ( 231.54 usd ) and got it fixed.

Not bad at all for the price, did the dealer to have to take replace the harness or just repaired the wire?
