Tools required:
Metric socket set or wrenches
needle nose pliers
rubber mallet
jack
jackstands

1: With wheel chalks in front wheels, Jack up rear of car ( I did this by placing some scrap steel tubing on my jack and lifting under the trunk pan). The bars will distribute the weight across the floor pan.

Image

2: place jack stands car( i had the whole car in the air because i was doing work in the front also)

Image

3: take wheels off

Image

4: Remove the caliper mounting bolts

Image

Image

5:Remove caliper and secure caliper out of the way. ( you may have to gently pry the pads apart if the caliper is getting hung up on the outer lip of your rotor).

Image

6: Remove bolt holding the rotor to the hub.

Image

7: Remove the rotor by giving it a few solid whacks with the rubber mallet

Image

8: Remove retainer springs at top and bottom of rotor with a needle nose pliers. Push in and pull your hand toward the rear of the car. the springs have a "J hook" on them.

Image

9: Remove forward spring with pliers

Image

10: Remove rear spring with pliers( this one will take a little more effort and wiggling.

Image

11: Pull out old pads

Image

12:clean up your hub mounting surface with a wire brush.

13: Now reverse the steps and install your new pads.
Make sure you put the retaining springs with the "J" facing the front of the car on both sides. Push in and slide toward the front of the car.

This is also a good time to clean and paint your rotors

This can be a PITA. I suggest getting new springs and simply cut the old ones out. They only cost a few bucks and should be replaced with the pads.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think it's towards the rear of the car.

Mine were all facing forward and if you look at the braket they go into it is thinner at the front so the "J" can hook around it.

also unscrew the "adjustment screw" near the parking lever so you reset that one too.

Re: (firehawk618)

good job documenting this. You seemed to have better luck getting the rotors off, as one of mine was a real PITA.

But did you spray the entire rotor? bit dangerous, isn't it?

I remembered mine being towards the rear. You're probably right, it's been a couple of months since I did mine.

In that case, then step 8 is backwards?

It also looks like you have scrapes on your calipers. I'd check the balancing weights on the wheels http://********************/smile/emthup.gif

Fixed it thanks

and ya the scrapes were from the wheel weights on my winter wheels.

Same question as T5 I hope you didn't spray the entire rotor! if you did , I hope you at least cleaned it up before re-installing. We did AthruC's E-brakes this past Sat. on his T5. This is a nice write up though.

Yes I sprayed the rotor hat and outer vent area. Paint did get on the braking surface. The first time you use your brakes it scrapes the paint right off with no problems! http://********************/smile/emthup.gif

That's what I said!

Nice writeup. I wish we knew that the springs had a "J" at the end, as I think we expected a "T" that would twist out...

Your shoes looked fine! Why'd you replace? We did mine because the braking system was rusted to hell and when we took the rotor off the shoes (surprisingly...

) delaminated...

I replaced them because they would lock on when i parked. I would have to pull forward before i could reverse out of parking spots. One of my pads delaminated when i pulled it out too, so i figure it was a good precautionary measure.

Re: (Minn R)

definitely a good idea. They should probably be replaced each time the brakes are done, given that they are prone to delamination and failure.

And the scary part is, they do look brand new and they already started separating.

Re: (T5 for Life)

Is OEM the only source for parking brake shoes? Sounds like poor quality shoes if they are delaminating, especially so soon in some cases. Geez, I NEVER had this problem in my 1974 AMC Hornet. Good thing, too. That had 4-wheel drum brakes.

I got mine from a local euro car shop, the brand name was scan-tech. You can find a couple other different brands online as well.

Did the scan-techs fit and are you happy with them? I have a set sitting on the shelf since Feb that I haven't installed yet. I was hearing that the ST's had poor fitment and several SSers couldn't get their parking brake to hold after installing them, so the advice was to go OEM. Your experience?

Re: (Minn R)

Thanks. Glad to hear we have a few different sources to choose from.

Re: Parking Brake Replacement Guide (Minn R)

Did you use the steel tubing to raise the front of the car too?

By the way great write up and thanks. I am currently doing mine right now. I will have to finish it tomorrow.

Re: Parking Brake Replacement Guide (sinisin63)

I just finished putting on my parking brake pads and now the rotor will not fit.
Any adjustment I need to make? I tried applying the parking brake several times and still nothing. are the parking brakes different from the left and right?

I did notice the part number on each one was the same.

Loosen the parking brake adjustment on the lever all the way, and then just wiggle the rotors on. Mine were a little tough to get on too...but they eventually slipped on. I also just cut all the springs and replaced them.

Where is the adjustment on the lever?

Wheel chocks. There, I said it.

if i use black on the rotor hats (and maybe vents) do i need to tape off? or will the brakes knock everything clear? also did u clean off the pads after they cleared all of the paint off?
You don't need to clean anything, paint is no match for the temperature of the contact surface. Whatever burns off or gets scraped off disappears into oblivion shortly. Spray away. http://********************/smile/emthup.gif

Man... I have always seen and heard some bad stories when people paint their rotors that way... I heard about it ruining pads and glazing rotors.... I woudl be very heistent to paint the surface area of the rotors
