Oil 0-40 or 5-30 for winter?

alright getting ready to change the oil and up to now I've always used Mobile 1 synthetic 10-30 for summer and the 5-30 for winter.

however I came across Mobile 1 0-40. is this better than 5-30? I know Volvo recommends the 5-30 .. would the higher range be better?

what do you think?

Re: Oil 0-40 or 5-30 for winter? (V50_T5)

It's interesting, I was just looking at this myself. The 05 manual says 10w-30 for summer and 5w-30 for winter, and a minimum spec of API SJ. Amsoil recommends 0w-40 for the S40, so I dropped them a note and sure enough the 09 manual says 0w-30/0w-40 for winter and 5w-30/5w-40 for the summer. It goes on to say use either 0w-30 or 0w-40 for synthetic. Minimum spec for 09 is API SL / GF-4.

Since the engine hasn't changed, I think it's correct to assume that these differences are due to the development/testing of the newer oils. The API SL spec is newer than the API SJ spec, not sure about Mobile 1 but the Amsoil 5w-30 that I used in the last change meets both of 'em. I may try 0w-30 next time around...

The 40 weight is just thicker than the 30 weight, really only necessary in extended high temperatures. Syn 30 weight will protect an engine just fine.

The "w" number is it's cold viscosity difference. I.e. 10w-30 is the equivalent of 40 weight when cold, 0w-30 is 30 weight when cold. This was a much bigger issue when clearances were huge and a thick weight oil was needed to fill the gaps in bearings and such. With syn, there's very little advantage of going to a high "w" number.

EDIT: Looking at http://www.mobil.com/USA-Engli...0.asp the M1 0w-40 meets SJ/SL, but not GF-4. I'd stick with the 5w-30 http://www.mobil.com/USA-Engli...0.asp which is SM, SL,SJ and GF-4

Re: (crossie)

I would say 5-30 or 0-30 for you guys, I use 5-40 in the summer because it gets insanely hot here, but 30 is more than adequate most other places.

Re: (jdsr917)

The Finnish Owner's guide recommends 0W-40 for winter and all-round driving over all other viscosities. I bet this wouldn't be a bad choice for Germany either.

The reason why the U.S. manual doesn't mention this (oil type) is probably that it has not been widely available and when found, much more expensive. Also in Europe, the oil change intervals are 20000km for our engines which is roughly 50% longer than in the U.S. That's why we need to use more expensive oil.

It's the New Oil from the - ( zzz ) - Oil Producers to make Better MPG in Winter.

If You do a lot of Cold Starts , Short Runs , do they make a 0-30 ?

Amsoil good for -48 F Cold 5-30 , so I don't really need the 0-30 but wondering.

Need to look up the Spec's On the Castrol Syn.
