Detroit, MI - Volvo's R cars have always been about dynamic design and an exciting driving experience. For the 2009 Model Year, Volvo Cars of North America (VCNA) will introduce R-Design for the C30, S40, V50 and XC90. R-Design includes model-specific design cues that promise to draw a lot of attention while still offering a premium experience.

I like elements of the R Design.

The Center Stack with its carbon fiber like appearance.

The blue faced clock face gages.

I'll probably get both when I order my C.

I'd like them to offer some performance enhancements as they have done with the Focus ST of Europe.

I totally "get" the real Rs.

R-Design? I never thought I would see the day when Volvo started marketing tuner "crap".

With no intent -- or promise -- of better performance, it would appear that's what we're talking about.

Audi has their S Line.
BMW has faux M cars.
Mercedes has the AMG/Sport cars.
Just another trim level.

So just like all the other then?

Except: Volvo ditched it's performance line. Audi still has its RS line, BMW the Real Ms, and M-B has the no-bull$hit AMG.

True.
Difference is, Volvo never had a performance line.
Just one model.
Plus, that model was never meant to be the equal of the M or AMG cars.
It was meant to offer a less expensive alternative.
Lets face it, a Volvo capable of equal performance to an AMG or M car would have cost as much or more.
Who would go for that?

Wrong. The Rs were Volvo's performance line -- and were marketed as such.

You're forgetting 850R, 855R, S70R, V70R and S60R (you should know this, Max!).

Single models released one at a time.
Contrats that w/ the M3, M5, and now the M6,all of which exist at the same time.
Same w/ AMG. Multiple models that exist at the same time.
AMG is actually more prolific.

You're reaching, Max.

How so?

Volvo has never had an S40R,S60R and S80R.
M-B has the C32,E55,S55, all at the same time essentially.

So would you say, then, that the S40 and V50 are essentially the same model?

Aside from the rear end, they are the same model.
Same chassis,same dimensions,same interiors.

And Volvo has had the S70R, V70R and S60R at the same time. Even if you combine the S70R and V70R, the company has had two distinct R models selling in the same model year.

WHAT?

The S70R went out of production in 2000. Or 99 IIRC
S60R didn't go into production until 2004.
That is hardly the same time.
Same w/ the old V70R. Gone in 2000, reintroduced along w/ the S60R in 2004.

Never was a S70R; at least not in the US.

Not in the U.S. but there was a limited run elsewhere.

Magoon,

your cockiness is way ahead of your lack of facts when it comes to Volvos...

Ummmm......I acknowledged that. I didn't realize that Max was selling cars outside the US back then. If so, I apologize.

Umm...I don't get it. Volvo never figured out how to properly market and invest in the R brand when they had actual R-line cars and hence built ZERO brand equity for the R-line. How in the world do they expect to find an audience for purely the look of a R?

Audi can pull off the S-line look because there are actual S-line performance enhanced vehicles an owners can steal some brand equity from for less cost than a real S-line car.

Moreover I guess this might mean Volvo really never intends to build a real R again in the future since by then they would find themselves not only trying to buy into a performance market but also needing to invest in re-educating the Volvo faithful who will have perceived the R as nothing but badging by that point.

As I said I don't get it. Maybe I should go back to school...
