New XC 40, Bluetooth not staying connected

Just took delivery on a 2024 XC40 Plus last week (our first Volvo). My wife's phone is constantly dropping bluetooth connections

Both phone are android. Car software version is 3.1.9
I have a OnePlus 10T that connects just fine and stays connected.
She has a OnePlus 11 5g.

I've tried deleting the pairing from both the phone and car, rebooting the phone, etc. Nothing works.

One thing I notice is that when it's connected and on the screen that shows connected devices the Bluetooth Toggle in the upper right (blue and to the right when connected, gray and to the left when disconnected) actually slides itself from connected (going right to left, blue to gray), then back again. I don't know if this is the Volvo itself doing this or not.

This happens whether my phone is in the car or not.

Obviously, she can't make hands-free calls when this happens, and all the other benefits from having the phone connected.

It's really a disappointing thing to see happening with a brand new car, but I still don't have an opinion if this is a Volvo problem or an Android problem. We were having similar problems with her previous car, a mini Cooper.

Anyone go through anything similar to this?

The last sentence suggests it's a phone issue. That's reenforced with the fact that your phone doesn't have the same problem. I haven't seen it as a common problem and not sure what would be causing it. I'd look through phone settings and see if there is anything that would be causing it to disconnect. Is there another device nearby that it's connecting to for wireless calls? Some sort of headset or something?

Yeah, I agree that it's probably a phone issue. I found a suggestion (non-Volvo related) to turn of Bluetooth Scanning in Location settings on the android, I am going to give that a shot. There's also an option in Android to reset Wifi and bluetooth settings, will try that as well. I'll let you know if I figure it out.

Just an update: Nothing I've tried has worked. But I did notice something interesting.

When I power off her phone, mine stays connected.
When I power off my phone and power on hers, the connect/disconnected loop repeats continuously (it's unusable)
When I power on both phones, both our phones run into the connect/disconnect loop.

The blue/gray slider toggle in the upper right of the bluetooth device screen tuns itself off then on, then off then on.

I can only think of two things:
1. Her phone is somehow sending the car a command to toggle off then back on (but if it's off, how could it send the "on" command)
2. Something in the connection to her phone is causing the bluetooth connection in the car's android system to reset itself (hence the slider toggling on its own)

I've gone through every conceivable setting I can find for bluetooth for both phones and our setups are identical. Her hardware is one generation newer (OnePlus 11 vs 10).

Update: I didn't get any relief from the dealer on this issue. The service guy was thinking that it might have to do with some app on my phone and/or car. I use Libby and Android Auto (and probably others of which I'm not aware). They are installed on both the phone and car. I uninstalled Libby from the car (or more accurately logged out cuz I don't see any option for uninstalling apps on the car). Then I tested using trying to make a call and the problem persisted. They are tossing the issue back to Volvo to resolve. I'll let you know what, if any, outcomes occur.

Also, I experienced the bluetooth on/off cycling on the loaner car which did not have Libby installed, so don't think it's about apps installed on the car.

Question for you all: Is anyone else using Libby on their phone? What other apps do you have that might be causing this?

Fwiw, same issue here with my Pixel 7 and 2024 XC60 recharge. When I want to make a call I have to turn BT off on my phone and use speakerphone mode. Many resets and app juggling, and no luck. Dealer has been no help. Such an annoyance for otherwise such a nice car. One thought I had was about the proximity of other car's BT (or phones in those other cars) trying to connect. I.e., the car is too sensitive. I need to test that on a drive far away from others sometime.

Thanks for the info. I don't think proximity of others' phones would explain my situation since my car's BT cycles on and off over a 10-15 second interval. Also, I've tested this and that for other possible solutions while sitting in my garage (which is 150-200 feet from the nearest possible other's phone) and still experienced the cycling.

A new twist for me is that now BT is turning itself on when calls come on both the car and phone (even though I've manually turned BT off on both). It happens while I'm using Android Auto via a usb connection between the phone and car. I'm now thinking it might have something to do with the Android Auto app. Any have any thoughts? Similar experiences?

Makes sense on proximity. Was just a guess as my issues seemed to have happened only in traffic, and most advice points to a conflicting device. I did find this on another forum: "Hey I had the same issue and believe it or not I actually had to do debugging on the bloody device (Pixel 7 Pro) while connected to the car. Try this, the issue you are having is most likely the interface or sound codec. So go into the developer options, change the AVRCP to 1.3 or 1.4 and restart the device. Then, pair the phone to the car and most likely the issue is the audio codec. Change that to SBC instead of AAC. Unfortunately those genius at google don't allow for us to change the codec unless connected. Once that is done launch spotify. Good luck!" Pixel 7 android auto keeps disconnecting on my BMW X3 - Google Pixel Community I hate monkeying around with deeper systems settings like this as it usually breaks something else. But sharing just in case.

EUREKA!

totallysmall nailed it. "Try this, the issue you are having is most likely the interface or sound codec. So go into the developer options, change the AVRCP to 1.3 or 1.4 and restart the device."

I tried the fix above changing the BT audio codec and (at least for now) it's working again. I was in the car today running around for an hour or so and it seems to be working just fine. I'll holler again if the fix doesn't stick, otherwise it's wireless listening for me again!

And yes, I agree with your deeper systems settings comment. It is a bit scary changing a deep settings, but codecs have been causing audio/video issues (at least for me) for decades, so it feels a bit less scary. That may be only because I've heard the term before... yikes!

Same issue here with a 2021 XC40. Issue happened right after a software update about six months ago. Thought it would be fixed in the next update. Still waiting..problem showed up on both of our S20 phones and persisted to our new Fold 6 phones. Didn't see a lot of chatter about other folks halving the problem so thought it might be a hardware issue. So took it to the dealer today. They tested it on a few phones and concluded it didn't work with Android phones. Seemed to connect fine to their iPhones.

I can't image all Android users having this problem...we would see a lot more noise out there. Not sure how to elevate this issue with Volvo as they don't seem motivated to fix the problem.

Has anyone tried restarting the car's connectivity module (TCAM) to see if that addresses the issue? There are instructions for doing so on the Volvo support page:

Also, fwiw, the cycling resulted is a loud buss from my speakers today, and the volume knob didn't do anything. I needed to pull over and restart the car. That's new. Anyone had that happen?
