So, I finally pulled the trigger on a used car.

I found a 2004 XC90 with 77k in my price range. It's black with the taupe interior. Timing belt and tuneup done at 60k. Dealer selling it put new tires on it.

The dealer selling it let me take it home over the weekend and I had it looked at by my mechanic on Monday.
The only issue either of us could find was the leaky gas tank/fuel pump issue. Even with the price to replace the fuel pump it was still a good deal. I even got the dealer to drop his price by $400 because of the issue.

Pretty happy with it. I think it will make a good family truckster and a DD for me.

Now, anyone know where I can get a new fuel pump at a good price?

Congrats on your 90 purchase. I haven't shopped for a fuel pump, but I'll give you a heads up on something you may discover...

If you start to notice your seat is reclined more than it should be when you get in, pop off the seat recliner switch. My '04 had me scratching my head over that issue. It's easy for your left thigh to hit the switch when getting out. The switches were moved more forward for '05, solving the issue, but creating the new issue of the side trim cracking. You may be able to swap them for the new style, and they're cheap enough now due to the frequent need to replace them.

I'll watch for that. I though that the seat was moving on it's own, but maybe I'm bumping it.

I just saw that FCP Euro and GAP have fuel pumps for around $150. I just have to make sure that I get the correct chassis code. Anyone know where I can find that.

It's kind of cool, to me anyway, that the companies that I used to use to keep my VW running also sell parts for Volvo.

Congrats! That's a clean looking car!
Thanks. This was not exactly what I wanted when I started my search. I was looking at 4runners, Honda Pilots and even Acura MDXs. I test drove a 2007 XC90 3.2 AWD and liked it enough, but it didn't really hook me. It had some cool options, 3rd row, rear entertainment, bi xenon headlights, but it had 121k and was not so clean. I saw this one pop up and decided to look at it. They let me take it for the weekend to have my mechanic look it over and I've been liking it more and more. It is really one of the nicer looking SUV I had found in my price range and by far the lowest miles.

I forgot about the PCV test. I'll have to do it soon. I'm also going to try and contact Volvo about the fuel pump issue. I keep putting the VIN into the recall sites and nothing comes up. I'm not sure that Volvo will do anything, but a call can't hurt.

It does have a sunroof. I will look into the drains. I had a drain problem in my 2002 MINI and don't want that again, especially if it could ruin the computer.

I think the pump is the problem. Not only do I have the gas smell, but sometimes it take longer to start. It's happened maybe 3 times in the time I've had it. I think I'm just going to order the parts and see if my mechanic will try and replace it sooner rather than later. I'd really like to take it on vacation in 2 weeks.

Couple of quick things since this is a 2004-

Check the PCV hose from the top of the camshaft to the oil trap (can see it drop down between the intake manifold in the center), make sure it's made of rubber and not the original crappy plastic hose that was put in at the factory. If the original plastic hose is still there, get it replaced (PN 8692217) and check to ensure that you have a clear enough PCV (glove test or the Volvo manometer, you're looking for suction from oil fill cap and/or the dipstick hole).

Be aware that this MY has the older style plenum cover on the driver's side (over CEM) that can leak under specific circumstances. A rework TNN has been created by Volvo with a revised plenum and harness cover. NOT mandatory to replace, just be aware and keep your cowl drains (top) clean and at some point get your hands on the bottom of the drains (access from under car) and make sure the drain paths are clear. For piece of mind, should check the sunroof drains (can't tell if this has a sunroof or not) and make sure they're clear and open.

The pump/tank issue noted above, if it's just a leak and/or odor, there is a recall out on this, specific to MY and area (can see https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=25517 for reference). If the pump is not working properly and VIDA has not been used for determining a parts fault, might check PEM connections for corrosion before arbitrarily replacing the pump.

Good luck !

Please just wanted to confirm the information above. I read elsewhere that 05-06 have defined VIN number with issues from plenum cover. Is the plenum cover issue in 05-06 different from 04?

Changing the fuel filter on this car is easier than changing a spark plug. Do it "while you are in there". It's under/by the rear passenger door.

You said yours takes a while to start. I never quite got the hang of starting our/her 06 2.5. I often released the key too soon. It either takes longer than the other cars I owned, or it sounds like it caught but hadn't.

Ive got 3 V8s but if I had to buy another I wouldnt mind getting the 2.5T and only the 2.5T I cant stand the other options.

I didn't think about it right away, but when I went out to make sure I had a plastic fuel tank I saw that it was easy to get to. I added it to my fuel pump order. Either I will do it this weekend or I'll have my mechanic do it when he's doing the pump.

Congratulations! That's a great looking car!
Thanks. When I was buying it from the dealer on Monday, he asked me if I had it waxed while I had it. They did a good job cleaning it, but it is a really clean car for being 13 years old. It's even clean inside, which surprised me being tan and all.

Steam cleaners can perform magic when it comes to AGE and FILTH in cars.
