Im thinking of wrapping mine in CF, cost is around $800 but about 1/3 of a real one. Looks the same, weighs maybe 5lbs more. And the contrast would be great on my white one...
Wraping it with it just putes a fake cf skin on your car and has no benifit of the actual Cf which would be weight loss. All your doing is adding weight and giving people something to say "omg that so gay its not even cf wtf"

Really dont wrap your hood in cf, if you want a contrast of cf simply paint your hood black.

Also the hood on our car weights a wopping 11LBS and a cf would be maybe 6 and so that minor savings is not worth the 3000 for a real one, nor the crap for 800 bux to wrap it.

actually, there are places out there that wrap things in real CF... one of my buddy's has a car audio shop and was driving around in one of his customers' car... it was an rx8 completely wrapped in CF... looked pretty cool..

yeah but what exactly is the point? Its basically heavier for the effect without the function of cf, I see no real use in doing it at all to a whole car. I mean hell paint it black if you want it to be a dark color.

Now if that RX8 was actualy all CF Id applaud them, but wraped, im sorry just not usefull.

Volvo design philosophy "If an item cant be functional then it cant be beautiful"

Makes sense to me.

what's the point?? beats me... it's totally making the car heavier... u have to apply all the CF and the adhesive to make it stick... although to be honest, black paint wouldn't have the same effect... the RX8 really did look good.. but u know what?? look at the car modding culture nowadays... a lot of people are doing a lot of things that don't make sense ie 4539 tv screens... people don't care about functionality anymore... everybody wants to build a showcar lol...

even i'm a bit guilty of this... i went with nineteens... to each their own!

And then what about the people who dont have much tuning potential? (ahem ahem me) we dont have much to do except cosmetic mods, and to be honest it wont gain that much weight, maybe the same amount as a few textbooks, and it would look a hell of a lot cooler.
if I had a T5, I would be in the same boat as you. But seeing as that I dont have much potential, all Ive got is cosmetic. But hell; to each their own.

Car modding culture isnt a culture of people making cars heavier for no reason.

I understand a show car, I personally find nothing attractive about loud colors and gaudy body kits and Tv screens and amps and subs out the ass with neon under glow kits. That to me is useless, even if its show intent and built, it changes the purpose of a car, which is to be driven, not stared at all day, or to live in, with your play station ect.

There are 2 very diffrent cultures to car modding. You have performance and then you have show. Performance would never add a weight gaining mod, as such as a CF body wrap that has the same effect of black paint, VS show where they do that all the time, shining example heavy gaudy big chrome wheels, made by rappers ect.

Tuners however look at it and say WTF, there is no real point or actual benefit to adding weight to 99% of vehicles, and the only and its opinion based benefit of alot of show mods, is "it looks better."

Like I said "If some thing isnt functional, It cant be beautiful" The Volvo Design Philosophy.

See the issue I have is cooler is subjective. Some may look at a cf wrapped hood or even a black one and be like why? Where as no one has ever said, oh wow a CAI thats gay.

Its all about look and function, CAIs make cars go faster, CF wraps make cars Appear or look faster which is basically all that undermines "rice". Now it can be tastefully done I totally agree, I mean I think a CF wrapped roof looks super on any color car, but wrapping crap just because you don't have performance potential is not an excuse for silly mods that don't actually help you out, unless your going for a show car look.

If your main complaint is "I don't have a car with modding potential" then I really think esp if you are intelligent to know what mods are and a basic understanding of a cars operation, that you'd purchase a car with a known after market.

I joined this forum before I purchased my car and I always research a big purchase like a car, because I know I want to do more then just leave it stock. Volvo's in general are not a big after market embraced car, due to there low sales amounts and at least with the S40 complicated electronics systems, and low demand for an after market parts.

I mean really if you look at it, its simple, no one wants to mod there 99 Oldsmobile Alero, but the person with an 06 civic does and has the support for it.

The "boy racer" persona is not kicked out by a 170hp 2.4i 3400lb Volvo S40 and hence lacks the after market for it, as where the T5 is the "powerful, quick, agile" S40 and hence has after market support, because people who got the T5 wanted the power, where as your 2.4 buyer clearly by engine choice really doesn't care about leading the pack.

Now I understand you are one of the few (judging on the amount of T5 VS 2.4i Owners on here) that you would like to mod, your car to be faster. And honestly all I can say, Is sorry you didn't look into the T5 model VS the 2.4 and that you may or may not have thought about modding until you purchased the car.

We had the same issues with the SPI focus Vs the 2.0 DOHC and 2.3L engines with all people with the cheap little SPI lacking support and having to do their own home grown power mods, and we have mad respect for some one pioneering on there, and Im guessing the same would be on here. I understand the delema, But I think you can do many better things to mod your car, with 800 dollars besides wrap the hood in CF, and that do mod the car to a benefit like say springs and shocks and front and rear sway bars.

2.4i's may be slower but you know they can carve corners just as good as a MS3 (our platform sister) with a 800 dollars or less in suspension mods.

Re: (S40T5TurboGT)

Of course its subjective, but thats the whole point of tuning; to get a car to your specs the way you like it; to have your own, personal creation.
And as for tuning, thats a recent development for me. When I bought the car I didnt even know that there was a market for it, 2.4 or T5. Personally I wanted to go for the T5, but of course, greenbacks were the issue. And unlike you, I dont work at a dealership and can't bang out deals as you can. We got our cars for the same price +- 200, and your car is way better than mine. I actually stumbled upon swedespeed by accident while looking for a fix for my car. Thats when I realized about Heico, ipd, Evolve, bsr, etc etc. But obviously, it was a bit too late by then. Reason I chose a Volvo was I wanted a car with character; S40 or 9-3 was what the choices came down to. I chose the s40 because A) drove better B) Looked better and C) interior is gorgeous. At the time I wasnt planning on tuning, now that I want to I dont have a choice so its mostly cosmetic to me.
And something wierd happened to me the other day. Somebody scoffed my CAI. They were like "why didnt you get HIDs?" and its not like this guy is an idiot; he drives a supra.
And to be honest; I probably wouldnt drop $800 to get a hood wrapped, as I said its just a thought; I probably am going to go for suspension.
But thats the beauty of cars + tuning; so many choices to suit every opinion.

I agree 100% with what your saying and understand it, but I am also saying next car if your looking to mod, you gotta research before you buy.

Also saabs SUCK major, and after market for them is more of a joke then Volvos
Image
Volvos at least have a name you can pronounce and aren't known as big hunks of garbage. The S40 is very pretty for a small car, however for 14g's you could have gotten many a different car with after market support, but you chose what you chose, now you have to live with it, Just mod it tastefully and no one will protest, I just worry for you with allot of your noob questions about sick jdm parts and stupid crap that "your friends" do yo your car LOL
Image
. You have come quite a long way sence then, but please dont let me see you or any one on here asking if an APC part, or any sort of roll call or vynal on your car, or gaudy chrome rims, or wings, or farting huge exaust. Then I wont have to hurt you.

Also take a note from my book, before you buy something (anything!) RESEARCH. Between google and wikipedia, I dont think a person can make an uniformed decision and say "I didnt know where to get info" Thank you age of the internet

Im just saying there are FUNCTIONAL cosmetic mods you can do that will improve the looks as well as other aspects of the car. Things like HIDs, Lip spoiler, Chin splitters, Suspension, Tint, HIDs, for you fog lights, diffrent rims, trim changes, interior dress up ect.

no but seriously, I agree. I have come a long way...many thanks to you Nick. I dont think ive ever posted a thread w/o a response from you (whether it be sarcastic, informative, or otherwise). Might not like it, but it always helps to see another perspective.
Cheers to the future debates we may have

And to be honest...i seriously doubt i would pay $800 to get it wrapped...
