My V8 mileage experience

We took a road trip this weekend in our V8 and I was amazed at the mileage. When we got on the Indiana turnpike, I reset the MPG reading and set the cruise for 67mph or so. After 50 miles of driving, our average MPG was 25.5. Very impressive.
Upon our next fill up, I reset the average MPG again. For the next 120 miles or so, while averaging between 75-80mph on the highway and some slower city driving, our V8 recorded a 21.7 average mpg. Compared to our previously owned T6, the mileage that we are getting on our V8 is significantly better. I am very impressed, to say the least. I just wanted to share our experiance with everyone. After owning both a T6 and V8, I can honestly say that the V8 gets better mileage in all conditions.

After 327 miles, the computer on my demo has indicated that my average is 19.8 mpg, mainly city/suburban driving. So far, I am very pleased.

hello, S40 owner crashing your XC90 party. Just curious, anyone mathematically figure the mpg rather than allowing the computer to do it? I'm curious to know how close it is.

Typically dead-on. I've never had a discrepancy when checking it with a calculator. Never more than a tenth difference - and as much as a tenth difference is a rare occurrence.

On our 2.5T the computer is a bit lower 2-5% in the extremes
About the same here. On individual tankfulls I have seen as much as 1.4 mpg difference (6.5%) but over a hundred tankfulls the readout is only 0.1 mpg lower than calculated (about 0.5%). Looking at all those visits to the station, I sure wish the car had a larger tank!

At 300 miles our V8 average fuel consumption has been 12.1MPG, we do mostly city driving with little Highway driving.

Our area is pretty congested and full of stop signs and traffic lights.

Our previous car, a 540i got around 13.5 average, so on par for the area.

Wow, you must do a lot of sitting. For the most part, we're averaging around 19mpg with mixed city and highway.
I guess we do, just a lot of congestion, average speed is reported to be about 15mph.

We have tried to be as light footed as possible too.

That's why they say millage will vary

Just curious,

What is the engine rpm at a steady 60 mph, and say 70 or 75 mph?

At 70 mph, I am showing about 1650 to 1700 rpm. At 60 mph U have seen as low as 1300 to 1400 rpm.

Same here...some times even close to 20.

By the way, kowalcs, do you get a slight hesitation when you are slowing down and while the car is in 2nd gear (NOT 1st) and you hit the gas pedal?

No, I haven't noticed that. My wife drives the vehicle 95% of the time. Lucky woman.

Re: My V8 mileage experience (kowalcs)

Not to sound too unsafe or anything, but does anyone have any experience with mileage in the V8 at higher speeds? Our issue is the opposite of what others' here face - I pity the poster who averages on 15 mph to work. In our case, it is pretty much a straight shot on the superhighway from home to work, with normal cruising speeds in the 90 mph range (the one surprising bit of liberty left in Europe). Even going 75 mph on the morning drive you are a road hazard - the equivalent of a farm implement.

In the 2.5 we get only around 16-17 mpg on the highway because of the high cruising speed. Have any of you with a V8 (anyone from Montana out there?) tried setting the cruise on 90, or even 85, and noted what sort of mileage you get?

Is that typical of what the RPM's should be at those speeds? Feels like it should be higher.

Yes. The car has to be in 6th gear, though.
