I decided to drive down to drive from Salt Lake City to the Houston area for christmas to see some family and friends. Some people thought I was crazy for making this drive in the winter time. I enjoyed it though.

Highlights (low lights) of the trip:

- I-80 Road Closure in Wyoming ( I was stuck in a town called Rawlins for 5+ hours)
- Poor Road Conditions in Kansas (It stopped snowing 24 hours ago and there was still snow on the major interstate)
- Grand Canyon (Breath taking views)
- Vegas (No details needed)

I drove a total of 4127 miles with stops in Denver, CO; Wichita, KS; The Woodlands, TX; Dallas/ Forth Worth, TX; Albuquerque, NM; Grand Canyon, AZ; & Las Vegas, NV.

Wide open parking garage at Harrah's in Vegas and this person parks RIGHT next to me. Normally I get angry but this might've been a mini R meet. V70 R? I couldn't tell cuz it was debadged.

After 2 weeks I'm back in Utah (blurred pic)

I topped 30,000 miles in my S60 R. Gotta drive it like it was meant to be...

Image

Overall it was a nice trip. No accidents and NO TICKETS so I'm happy. The R handled great on the icy highways in Wyoming and Kansas. I was able to average 24.9 MPG for the entire trip (according to the trip computer).

I hit the following states:

Utah, Wyoming, Colorado, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, & Nevada

Re: (Karaya Eins)

wow, nice trip man.

I was actually thinking about a long trip in the future. Gotta do it in the summer though, I don't like cold or snow. Gotta see who is going with me... don't wanna get annoyed half way there :cD

and yeah... what's up with that 510 miles to empty message?

I would understand it if the car was going down hill at 40 mph in neutral with rpms at 1.5k :cD

Nice summary of your trip. Having driven 62k miles in my VR during the past 20 months, I appreciate the old fashioned road trip. Wish we could have met up in Houston - didn't make it back from Kansas City via San Antonio before you left. Thanks for the call while you were in Houston. http://********************/smile/emthup.gif

I'm disappointed, clearly you weren't driving NEARLY fast enough

Grand Canyon is truly awesome, I wish I had brought my R there in the winter rather than June when it was 100F+ (heat soak anyone?) as there are tons of fun roads in that area, especially the North Rim.

Very nice pics - a road trip like this in the R is something I have been dreaming to do!

yeah, that is a VR that parked by you.
Are you sure that is a v70R? The car doesnt have the R front intake nor the R grill....just seems like a regular AWD

yea it would've been cool to have a mini R GTG while i was in town.

i knew full well, airfare would've been cheaper but this trip was more for me to see parts of the country i hadn't seen previously. sometimes you gotta bite the bullet. http://********************/smile/emthup.gif

lol. lets just say i was "scared" to really gun the car on this trip. i acquired a ticket going 30+ over the speed limit here in slc prior to leaving.

Nice recap. I'm jealous of the time you took off and the opportunity for a longlong road trip. Unfortunately, I've yet to see most of the west.

Good to see the R performed as it should.

I'm pretty sure or they are faking it really well. that is an R bumper, it has a spoiler, and satellite wheels. the p1R had the regular grill- only the XC was eggcrate. also, NorAmer didn't get a V70awd, only a S70awd. V70 awd was R only.

I'm not talking top-speed, I'm talking those twisty mountain roads where the limit usually stays 55MPH but you end up doing 1G+ through the turns at those speeds

Re: My 4000+ Mile Holiday Trip (05BruzaS60r)

Looks like you had a fun trip! I just got back from Portland last week. In the past week and a half I think I logged about 2,000 miles. I drove from Oakland to Portland, then to Mt. Hood twice, back to Cali (through the leading edge of the biggest storm of the year) and then to Tahoe and back this weekend. The R is an awesome road trip car for sure. I went through some nasty weather too, but no issues whatsoever. I wish the washer fluid was heated though.

I felt bad for the poor souls that had to chain up on I-5 in the pass. There was this one stretch of road that switched from 2 lanes to 3. The far right was all semi trucks, the far left were all cars but the middle lane was empty but full of snow. Which lane did I pick...
Image
I shot ahead of all that traffic with a quickness - it was sweet! I have Dunlop winter sport 3Ds which I'm very happy with.

But now my sonic blue R is all brown; it needs a bath big time...
