I'm going to be taking delivery this early oct. for our new XC90 and was wondering......does anyone have an idea or two for things that are a must see in sweden or norway? We plan on spending a couple of weeks and are open to suggestions. We were thinking of going up to oslo for a few days, then out to the fjords for another couple of days, then head over to stockholm for a week, and finally finish our last few days in copenhagen. Since we haven't set our travel plans in stone any info would be greatly appreciated.

Well, a general tip is to not only visit cities like Olso or Stockhom, but also visit the "outback". For example northern Sweden and Norway. For the very far north of Sweden/Norway the town of Kiruna can be a good place to start. This though means a LOT of driving since Sweden is a quite large county. But it is worth it. There is something about the endless forests and the great nature in the far north.

And to all, a happy Midsummer!
(Today, 25 of June, is midsummer eve here in Sweden, our biggest holiday besides Christmas. So now I'm heading of for some fresh potatoes, Swedish herring, lots of snaps (Absoult Vodka...) and some dancing around the midsummer maypole!

Being of Swedish heritage, I wanted to see as much history as possible. We spent our time visitng historical sites and runestones while trying to see as wide a variety of the countryside as possible. We also took the castle and manor house tour (expensive but worth every penny). The coastline just above and west of Gothenburg is beautiful (as was everything we saw). Unfortuately/fortunately it was the end of March so there weren't a lot of people everywhere we went. Sitting with and talking with the locals at breakfast was always a treat. They were outgoing and fascinating to talk with as they discussed what they thought were the best things for us to do during the day.

We had already toured Stckholm when I was there on business. The Vasa museum and Skansen were great. Stockholm itself is worth a couple of days. We stayed at the SAS Radisson in Stockholm and would recommend it.

Our next OSD will be in June, when the weather should be better and more things to do. So much to see and so little time.

Following is a link for the Vildmarksvagen (umlaut over the a in vagen) the wilderness way .You should do this drive, especially if you re getting an xc. part of the drive is open only mid june to mid october but that should work for you. On part of the way is Hallsingsafallet. Umlauts omitted. Go see this waterfall. google it and read some descriptions then go see it. the turn off road from gaddede to the falls is better than coming up from the south. both are dirt gravel for about 15 miles but from the north is better. see part of the description in rough guide : sweden . for other sights also check lonely planet sweden.
we drove the vildmarksvagen in june and on up to jokkmokk to see the midnight sun ( yes i know not an option in october) but a fascinating drive
another beautiful drive is from jattendal on the e-4 north of uppsala to delsbo on rtes 307and 305. we took that as we went to mora. ( go to nusnas for the dalahasts).
Lund ,uppsala and their domkyrkas are interesting as is the vasa in stockholm. there is much that is wonderful in sweden so must sees are dangerous and personal but if you are seeing some of the fjords in noway you could come across and hit the wilderness way as you moved south toward stockholm.

In Stockholm, lest I forget. go eat at the Bla Dorren( sorry, no svenska type for the o over the a) the blue door, the food and drink is wonderful and truly swedish. we went with swedish friends who chose the snaps for us ) at the Sodermalm end of the bridge to Gamla Stan. turn left as you go out the door and head uphill , soon on your right you will find a path that takes you far along the Sodermalm cliffs with a spectacular view of the rest of Stocholm including the lake and part of the harbor. it is right along the top of the cliffs. go until you come to the solid rock area and then you will be above the old brewery. walk back or go down and walk the long blocks back or take the t.

Even easier, you can just select Swedish as an alternate keyboard and then use alt-left-shift to toggle.

Or (if using Windows, as above, not me) check the ASCII-code for the Swedish letters and hold ALT-button and dial the ASCII-code on your numpad....

This may be the most complicated and nerdiest alternative......
