Motor oil in a hot climate - 5w30 or 0w30?

I see a lot of you guys have switched to the 0w30 oil as it was supposedly recommended in the late versions of the car in the manual, but is that only for people in colder climates? I mean, here in the 9th circle of Hell (on the Gulf Coast), it gets pretty damned warm. Is 0w30 even safe to run for 3,000, 5,000, even the recommended 7500 miles?

Edit: Also, is anyone here using Amsoil oil at the extended service interval that Amsoil recommends (15k miles with filter changes every 7500 miles)? I'm thinking of changing to that from my preferred Mobil 1 since the Mobil 1 is not formulated for extended service intervals and going 7500 miles is supposedly, according to the experts, pushing that oil to its limit as far as it can go safely.

Amsoil doesn't make a filter for our cars (they recommend the Mann filter, but they have a partnership with them), but Mobil 1 does have one, M1C 152, and it looks like a superb piece if not a little pricey.

Thoughts, opinions?

Any idea why Volvo switched the spec? I assume it had more to do with prevention of the oil trap clogging than anything to do with figuring out after several years that the bearing clearances were too tight since we haven't heard of any bearing related failures occurring at a very high rate.

Just out of curiosity, is there anyone other than Baxtr that is south of the Mason-Dixon Line that uses 0w40 or 0w30?

I use Amsoil Signature Series 0W-40 and I change that no later than 3.5-4K miles. I could maybe see extending that but I can't get myself to do that. If you tried going super long you probably need to change the filter at the least, might as well change the oil while down there

Just use the Mann filters. I wouldn't go over 7500 on really good oil. These 15k changes are usually geared to normal, everyday cars that don't see abuse. Due to the amount of heat and RPM turbos produce, it's hard on oil. I just use M1 and change it every 5k. It's cheap at Walmart

yeah M1 is dirt cheap at wally world. Advanced has it for $34 and Wally has it for $22 lol. saw that the other day when i went to advanced and i told the dude that im not paying $34 for a 5qt jug when i can pay $22 at walmart and he said theres no way its $12 less. so i went bought it and came back and showed him the receipt and he was speachless.

If you're truly concerned about extended drain intervals, get an oil analysis done.

Every engine is different. Full flow filters won't filter out extremely fine particles, which is why you need to change out your oil. If you're really worried, you could install a bypass filter, which will keep your oil sparkling clean.

I run Amsoil Euro car formula 0w-40. It's arguably superior to Mobil1 and I've run it in all my cars in the past. I also did "extended" 10k drain intervals on my old bmw e30 w/ over 270k miles w/ filter changed every 5k on that car with no problems.

Most any "synthetic" oil will be fine for standard drain intervals at normal operation. However, I believe Mobil1 is primarily a group III oil which isn't really considered a "real" synthetic by purists. It should still be fine for normal applications though.

The euro 0W40 is mostly group IV but with Walmart and mail in rebates I've got it as low as $2 a qrt

AMS oil makes a fine product, but the 15,000 mi oil change interval is only good for lower hp, simpler cars.

IE my wife meets the requirements but I'm always falling into the harder driver category.

If you read long enough, you will find the ligature that even AMSoil says not to do 15,000 mi oil change intervals on turbo charged cars, or the hard core drivers.

I have used AMSoil in the past, but now with having 3 cars to change the oil in, a tractor, a million home engine sect I moved back to Castrol 0W40 in the Black 5 quart containers at Walmart. The 0w40 has seen the coldest mornings in the winter down to -7 or colder in the winter, and it was 104 degrees today during the summer.

I have messed with pretty much all of the oil filters for our cars in the last 5+ years, my favorite that I'm currently running now is the WIX Sythetic filter. They are about $10-11 from Rock Auto. I have run the Mobile one, and Fram synthetic filters in the past as well. The Fram synthetic can be found local at Walmart of all places, but they want $27 for them.

I stay up on my oil changes like clock work at 3,000 mi or even a little sooner sometimes. Only paying $23 bucks for a 5 quart container from Walmart it doesn't hurt that bad. There are all sorts of problems that creep up on these cars if you neglect the oil change interval. Clogging of the Flame Trap/PCV setup is just one side effect.
