I will try to get a how to video posted for this soon.

This is for people installing a Miller Motoring skid plate who never had a skid plate before. I am assuming that the process is similar for both the Volvo aluminium skid plate and the iPd aluminium skid plate.

just informational: the volvo skid plate requires putting rivets in the subframe. so that will be an added step that some people may not be able to do on their own.
FYI - the ipd skid plate installs differently towards the rear of the car. the front is similar though.
Tools Required:
  • 5/16th metal drill bit and drill
  • 13mm socket
  • needle nose pliers
  • a way of elevating the front of the car (jack, ramps, lift, etc.)

1. Get the car up in the air.

2. Remove 3 of these little red caps. Just pry them out with pliers, there's no need to save them.

They are located along the front of the underside of the car.

Here's what they look like when out.

3. Remove 2 of these little white caps. Just pry them out with pliers, there's no need to save them.

They are located to the left and right of the torque mount.

4. Align your bolt to fit into the rectangular opening.

Then turn it 90° so it rests in place.
Image

You'll notice that the front openings are a hair to small.
Image

Carefully drill out the opening until it's large enough to fit the head.

5. This is the order we will be applying the hardware: Washer, Lock Washer, Nut.
Image

Put them on each bolt to secure them in place; these will be your skid plate mounting points.

6. Put the skid plate up on the car and add a washer and nut to each bolt. You may need a friend or something to hold the skid plate up while you put the remaining hardware on.

Reviews:
The Miller Motoring skid plate is 3.7mm of aluminium, powder coated black.

The skid plate hangs a little lower than where the oil pan sits. I have about 3" of clearance now, but 3" of clearance with protection is better than 4" of clearance with everything exposed.

There are openings in the plate for all of the main drain plugs, as well as "cooling" vents and an opening in the front to keep smooth airflow passing under the car.

My only complaint is that the oil drain plug is about an inch off of the opening in the plate. This will just require a drain funnel, so no real problem.

This plate is a prototype (#2 of 5) and is not available for sale. However, you can still order protective aluminium plates from Volvo and iPd.

Boo +1, What's the point? . . . :p

Looks nice I have to say. Though I which those holes were not so big. I'm a fan of protecting the underside of the car as much as possible from dirt and salt.

funny story, i just took off my ipd skid plate and it was full of dirt. hahaah. well that's what i get for working on a construction site.

I would definitely want to cover as much as I can if I were to work on construction site all the time :D

I actually don't mind the plastic cover. What I hate are the anchor points that are getting weaker and weaker every year!
Sometime I think I should make some form of hybrid using the plastic as a primary housing and reinforcing it where skid protection is most needed.

They won't be. He's packed up the company as he's going back over seas. Your only option would be Volvo or iPd...

Haha, well... There is still hope one day. This was more of a write up for C30Crew, but also a general skid plate installation guide.

I'm surprised more people don't have the OEM skid plate.

Sorry... Like I said, this write up was for the Miller Motoring section of C30Crew, just thought I'd share over here for anyone else interested in installing skid plates.

I wanted to make it clear that the plate that I have is not a production plate that's for sale. I will talk with Joseph and see if he could consider having more of these made, seems like there is a good bit of interest!

So some of my screws fell out of the front of my IPD Skid Plate. Looks like I can upgrade the hardware. What size are these T bolts?

I'm not sure on the size and have since replaced all the T bolts that were on my car.

The fronts, I wouldn't even worry about T bolts though. You can easily reach in through the top and drop in normal bolts.

Do you remember what size you replaced them with?

I think I used 1" long 1/4" bolts. If I recall correctly, I had to drill out the holes to be a little larger to fit the bolt. But the larger bolts haven't snapped, even when my skid plate smashes into things.

Sounds good
