Hi all,
Writing to see if anyone has any experience with a newer Volvo having intermittent loss of all electrical power. I've seen some threads on similar topics, only one with a very similar issue, but no real solutions yet. Here's the issue:

I have a 2013 Volvo XC60 3.2 FWD with 40,000 miles, just the basic model without any upgrades. Yesterday the vehicle had no power. No dome lights, no dash lights, no ignition, no power door locks, key fob didn't do anything. A totally dead car. I hit the start button and nothing happened. I didn't leave any lights on or doors open that would have drained the battery. I opened the hood, took off the batter cover and inspected the battery. Everything looked good, no corrosion, wires connected. Next I open the driver's door and the now the dome lights and dash lights come on. I try to start the car. It turns over once and then all the power goes out again. I go back to the engine, wiggle some battery wires a little (literally did nothing of significance) and then go back to check. the lights come on again, and the car starts right up. I turn it off after running it for 10 minutes and it starts up again no problem. This smells like some sort of electrical issue instead of a battery issue to me. ECM maybe? Why else would ALL the power be dead, only to come on again when I basically just open the hood? Doesn't make any sense. The day before yesterday it was raining all day, which we drove in for 5 hours and the temperature was in the mid 60s. This same issue also used to happen about a year ago, probably a handful of times. The car would always start up again after I opened the hood and looked at the battery. I seem to recall it was also associated with a recent rain, but not always. There are no check engine lights, just the "time for regular maintenance" reminder (I do the routine maintenance myself).

Thoughts? I would love to hear especially from someone who has very similar experience and if any repairs were done that worked. When I get home from work I'm going to check the battery more thoroughly, but I'm not too suspicious that's the issue. It was replaced about 1.5 years ago at the dealership at the time I bought it (wondering now if they knew this was going on??).

Oh, that's scary. I wouldn't be surprised if you had some critter nibble on some important wires that ended up touching -- disabling the system.

Just to follow up, I ended up checking the battery and terminal connections. There was a little corrosion but actually one of the connections was a little loose. I disconnected both connections and cleaned everything with the terminal cleaning metal thing and hooked it all back up and haven't had any problems like this since. Glad it was a simple solution!

Me, too.

I have a 2015.5 XC60. I was told by the dealer that the ".5" is a mid-year upgrade with internet connectivity and a Volvo-on-Call app.

BOTTOM-LINE: No dealer solution at this time. They claim never to have seen this problem with our model year car regardless of recalls for earlier model years. I suspect an electrical short or a rodent-chewed wire.

The problem happens while the car is in motion. The dash warning lights light up like a christmas tree (brake, airbag , power steering, parking brake failures). Speedometer, fuel and RPM gauges flatline. Turning signals fail. Entertainment center goes black. Doors won't lock manually or with the key fob. (Oddly enough I can use the VoC app to lock/unlock the doors and start the car.). The VoC app shows that the windows are open when they are not.

After my mechanic ran diagnostics, the results pointed to CEM communication bus failures to a number of subcomponents for all the items listed above.

The dealer insisted on following the maintenance protocol and ran diagnostics getting the SAME results. The dealer brushed off any mention of similar recalls since there was none for 2015 nor the same CEM part. After they cleared the codes and did a a road test (for a problem that occurs unexpectedly at random!!), I took the car home whereupon it happened within 2 hours. I took it back. They did a software upgrade (similar to the 2014 recall), kept the car over a 4-day weekend to drive it but the problem did not re-occur. I took it home. It has re-occured 2 times since (15 and 20 days after that last visit).

Okay so I have a 2013 Volvo xc60. I had the exact same thing happen yesterday. Driving down the road just sudden lose of all power. I was told it was a bus fuse right on the battery terminal. We unhooked the power wire cleaned a little put it back and it was good for about 45 seconds. Repeated the process and it was fine for the rest of the day and then again out no where it happens again. Idk if it will help but have someone check the fuse right on the positive battery terminal.
