Hey guys im looking a a 2010 S40 R Design awd with the manual transmission, its got the 2.5 litre has 89k miles, 2 owners, and a clean title. Its pretty hard to find good info on these so I figured I'd check the forums. Anything I should look out for or need to be prepared for if I purchase? The asking price is 9,999$ so not sure how good of a deal that is.

Seems on the highest end of the price range honestly.... although this market seems to have everything overpriced beyond belief. I purchased mine (same year, model, m66, awd) for 17k with 42k miles, 2 previous owners, clean title. Mind you that was over 7 years ago.

Check the maintenance history (hopefully they have it), timing belt should 100% be done asap (110k miles I think, or 10 years), replace the upper radiator hose with a silicone one to eliminate that cheap plastic tee (they crack, causing all things bad).... those are the main ones off the top of my head. As long as you keep up on the PM, these cars are great. I'm sure others will chime in...

If you do buy it, congrats.

Yeah, the market for used cars is beyond incendiary. It seems BaT (Bring a Trailer) is the new Kelly Blue Book.

You seem very knowledgeable about the cars, in my short search I havent found much after market support. Are there any good brands or tuning companies in the states. It would be my daily but I'd like a turbo back exhaust and tune if possible

I'll chime in briefly, having AWD.
Be prepared: AWD is very limited on performance mods (outside of software) like full exhausts, suspension. FWD has all the goodies like suspension options and exhausts. I'm having a full exhaust custom made because I don't like the pre-made options available.
Similarly, software, bolt ons like more efficient Intercooler, and turboback exhaust are my only performance focus points.

Maintenance is my priority.

There is a plethora of information on this forum about just about everything.... i would say 75 percent of my knowledge about volvos is from this forum... 25 from experience. The community here is extremely helpful so you definitely came to the right place.

As far as tuning goes there are a few state side and plenty of options for simple bolt ons. Elevate, shark performance, and Hilton for tuning software and for the bolt ons Elevate, EST, and Pumaspeed.

As said in the previous post... AWD has slightly less options but they are still doable. The mods are not as cheap as other platforms either, but they are worth it if you like the car.

Yep, and as Michael says, “START HERE!”
Considering an S40 or V50? Just buy one? START HERE!

+1

He also has a thread somewhere with different clips of different exhaust setups to give you an idea of how great these things can sound. Here's a clip of mine.
