Local dealer closed its doors

I just received two letters letting me know that a pretty busy (atleast when I was there) local dealer closed its doors after 15 years. Volvo of Pleasanton, CA is no more.

The letter form the dealer said VCNA is consolidating SF Bay Area dealers, the letter from VCNA mentioned no reason for closing.

Anyone have dealers closing in their area?

Re: Local dealer closed its doors (t6tim)

One of the dealer in So Cal closed its door (Shelly Volvo in Buena Park, CA) in 2007. I visited another dealer last week and the manager told me another one (Ventura Volvo, CA) will soon close its door this year.

Comparing the drop of sales volume 40+% (08.2007 and 08, 2008), no wonder dealers are closing its door.

When I was at Pleasanton Volvo about a month ago - in terms of customers- they were DEAD. I am not terribly surprised- the service quality was very hit and miss, and more often it was miss.

The closing will mean getting parts or service will take more time (and driving).

yep, gone. the service dept is morphing to lexus. a friend of mine was the service manager for volvo there for the past few years and he told me they will still service volvos, but will not do new car warranty work. they will do the volvo extended (vip) insurance jobs.

yes service there was hit and miss, i had sort of my own mechanic there, who is great. but other friends of mine will support the hit and miss statements. i was able to get appointments when i needed them, and because they knew me, when i would say what the problem was they would make sure they had the parts so they could do the job on time. i never had a problem with pleasanton. i think they were a hidden location and they just did not sell cars.

i bought both my cars a lawrence, in walnut creek, and i will do all service there mostly because they are rather good. i have not had any problems with them either.

i hear more are closing too.

I wasn't gonna say anything, but yes, the service quality left something to be desired. Jobs would get done, but they tended to damage stuff in the process. They were good to me though.

I can HIGHLY recommend Berberian in Stockton. Level of service is unbelievable.

Well, not surprising....smaller store and they were way too close with Calabasas Volvo; a pretty sizable retailer.

Volvo is actively encouraging dealers in overcrowded markets to close.
No secret there.

Yes, and in all fairness... Volvo is hardly the only manufacturer doing this. It is an industry-wide issue right now.

I received the same letter. Pleasanton was the nearest one for me and I had a neutral experience with their service dept.

The huge Ford dealership closed too. Toyota will be moving in that lot soon.

This is something that is long overdue for Volvo. With many import car manufacturers, field reps were encouraged back in the 60s and 70s to find as many people as possible who could possibly open and run a dealership. This is why you see Volvo, BMW and MB dealers in close proximity to each other in some areas.

At the beginning of this year, Volvo had almost as many dealers as BMW, yet sold less than 1/3 of the amount of cars. This is actually a good thing, and will hopefully mean stronger dealers in the end committed to the brand.
