So this afternoon, in preparation for installing my CAI, I was planning on cleaning my K&N Air Filter. I was surprised when i found this:

The melting/burning occurred right here:

Additionally, I noticed that the air filter was slightly loose.

Should I be alarmed or is this somewhat noRmal?

Thanks for your help - I am beginning to realize that I am pretty much the least mechanically inclined person. Furthermore, I am doubting my ability to install the IPD CAI. Should I give that a try or leave that to the professionals? No joke.

Well first off I would replace that filter, it looks like it has some big holes in it now that will let in dirt. As for the CAI it's up to you, if you feel comfortable doing it then go for it, took me maybe 15 minutes total, so a shop could have it done in that amount of time also.

You need to line one of the notches at the end of the filter (triangular shape, one on each side of the base) into the slot for it on the bottom of the airbox. That will prevent the filter from moving around and rubbing holes in itself again

I'd stick with the stock filter. Also, I thought this would be a thread about someone else with a warped stock filter.....

One night, I got an engine service required message. Upon inspecting the airbox, I found this:

The triangle mounts were still snapped in place, so the lip was actually peeled off of the MAF port. Weird, right? Never happened again.
