Jack failed, car dropped, now noise while driving

Well bit of a scary moment for me today... I had all four wheels up today to do some plastidipping on the wheels. I put the wheels back on the drivers side... And raised that side with a jack to remove the two jack stands supporting the weight on that side. As I was removing the last of the two jack stands the car suddenly dropped. I almost had the jack roll over my fingers.

Anyway the jack looked like it was leaking fluid All over the place. Now I have a knocking noise coming from the drivers front.. It increases in frequency as I go faster. The axles look okay.. I took out the axle bolt and put it back in.. Axle seems fine.. But what could it be?

Wheel Hub?

here is a low quality video for reference... click on pic for vid.

That sucks! At least you still have all your fingers though! The car can be fixed, fingers not so much.

To me sounds like the axle is undulating in and out. Maybe one of the c/v joints came partially apart?

wow, that sucks o2k...I'm glad you're ok buddy...while up and you spin your wheel freely ...any noise then as well?

Do you have 17" or 18" wheels. I had a similar noise (not as loud) and it turned out the wheel weights were hitting my caliper. With the 17" wheels, the clearance is so tight that if you dropped it on the caliper and bent the part where it bolts on the knuckle, maybe the noise is your caliper crashing into you wheel weights. Just and idea but not all that likely, especially if you have 18" wheels.

I have 18 inch wheels saleen.. It didn't look like there was any clearance issues from any wheel weights.. I wish it was that simple :(

Dougy.. I can't lift it up since my jack doesn't work anymore haha..

I was thinking about going into a super walmart and picking up a jack.. But I'm now thinking just take it in somewhere and get it looked at and replaced.. I really need this done right since I was supposed to move to florida today. I got delayed due to this. With my luck.. Ill break something else trying to fix this..

I think your issue may be buying jacks from Walmart :p

But in all seriousness, what kind of a jack did you have and did it show signs of failing?

LOL... They are the only store thats open 24 hours.. Had I bought one.. it would have been because I had no choice..
There was no signs of failing... not that I noticed anyway. After the jack failed I noticed a puddle of fluid.. so maybe it was slightly leaking and I didn't see it and then it finally gave.

I would assume it crashed and landed directly on the rotor, correct? If so, it probably cocked the rotor from the vehicle weight. Maybe you f*cked up a pad or broke one of the two pins that hold the pads in place and float the caliper. If it were me, I would first take my caliper off and look for damage. If you have a buddy near by, you could put it up on four jack stands (obviously a sore subject right now), take the wheel off, put the car in gear and run it while you listen for noise. If you rule out the caliper, I would put my money on wheel bearing.

If you do think its a wheel bearing, I could sell you mine dirt cheap. I just replaced min with a *** because I thought my ticking was a flat roller. My clicking actually turned out to be the wheel weights rubbing on the caliper and the bearing did not need replacement. Now I have a perfectly good bearing with 37k miles on it and nothing to do with it.

Since other side was still supported by jackstands, you could have hyperextended axle as someone else said. This could have damaged the cage/balls in one of the CV joints.

Can't see what else could have caused a noise that happens with wheel rotation due to that kind of incident.

I'm guessing you didn't have the lugs torqued when it fell and after the fact it's unlikely you were able to draw the wheel onto the hub evenly against the vehicle weight. Other than looking for physical damage after something like that I'd make sure your lugs are properly torqued.

They are torqued.. but it didn't help... I took it in this morning.. And they said I need a new wheel hub.. and the axle is not sitting properly.. So I am replacing both.. sucks that this ended up being costly.. But as far as the wheel hub they said it was on its way out at some point.. this just sped it up. The axle I probably could have left alone.. But at this point I just can't take any more chances in delaying since I have to make my long trip to FL.

You have to remember its part of the game we play, working on our cars.

You win some, you loose some, but you are lucky you didn't pinch fingers or a hand.

Although you are out some money, you still have a hand wich is the important part.

There was a guy in the Syclone/typhoon board that was working on his 454/dullay tow truck and knocked the trans out of gear while he was under it. His wif came home and found him crushed under the truck and dead. She had to get in the forum and let everyone know what happpen to the guy. Ever since then I'm super cautious under the car. I still use jacks from china (eveything is from there these days), I use the much bigger truck style jack stands and some times put extra stands under the car.

yeah ive heard the horror stories.. And I never go under the car without jack stands.. I never expected this to happen when I was removing the stands.. But I will be a lot more cautious next time. I am thankful I have my fingers and Hand.. Worth more than money for sure.

I see you got an answer... and I was going to say it was a hub issue...

Very VERY glad YOU are ok, though... jack failures are a SCARY thing... I've been around a few (work in the business, especially tires where they just lift one wheel) and you see it happen... ALWAYS have a stand under the car if you are going under it.

I had one of those wal-mart jacks for a while (ok, technically still do have it, just don't use it) I splurged when a much better one was on sale a little while back, because of the fear of a sudden blow out... any time a jack mfgr thinks they have to put a pin through the bar for a "safety" tells me they don't have much faith in their hydraulic rams...

Glad they found it. Glad you are ok. and safe journeys on your move!

A long time ago I had a flat on my 850, used the volvo jack to replace it and the "C" opening that catches the bar on the frame of the car just bent right open. The jack fell down sideways. Luckily all 4 tires were still on the car. I was working for a Volvo dealer at the time. The parts guy replaced it for me under warranty and I asked him about the jack and he said he wasn't surprised it did that. Those jacks are a joke! For a company all about safety you think they would provide you with a better jack.

My advice is to never use that jack for any repairs. They are for roadside emergencies only and I would look for a hard concrete surface to use it on or very hard asphalt at least. And of course never ever get under the car with that jack!

^Those look great! Like Tethys but better.

^But would it fit under the car at the lift points?
