This is probably a dumb question, but is there really an FWD M66?

And if so, and you have a 2004 R that needs a new tranny, is there any way to mod an FWD M66?

Finally, if your mechanic says your M66 is noisy and rattles, should/could you just drive it like that as long as the trans oil isn't full of metal pieces?

Just trying to figure out what to do, if anything.

FWD M66s can be found in P2 T5s and P1s. Probably some other P2s as well but I'm not entirely sure. An M66 from a P1 will bolt into a P2, but you'll to modify a couple of things to make everything work.

I think the biggest issue with using a FWD M66 is there's going to be no tapped holes to mount the angle gear too. There are areas in the casing for the holes to be drilled and tapped, but I imagine by the time you take your trans to a machine shop and have them do all that work you'll have spent nearly as much as what it would cost to source a AWD M66.

Also, in general, sourcing a FWD M66 is more difficult due to how rare they are compared to the AWD M66's.

If your trans is just noisy and rattles, try changing the fluid and see what condition it is in. Sending out for oil analysis will tell you pretty much everything you need to know about its condition.

I don't want to pull mine, but whenever I need to, I'm definitely putting a Quaife LSD in lol

Could be your dual mass flywheel is making noise, not the input shaft/bearings/gear rollover rattle.

While synchronizers aren't available, I think all of the bearings are if you want to rebuild what you have.
