Is there a way to disable or bypass the start-stop feature on Volvo cars?

Is there a way to disable or bypass the start-stop feature on Volvo cars? I dislike this feature and am considering purchasing a V90, but have been informed that all models come with it. I am aware that BMW and Mercedes have similar features, but I am unsure about Volvo. Can anyone provide insight or advice? Thank you.

Only sort of an answer to your question.
Just bought a new V60 and have only had the auto start stop function on rental cars before. This is by far the best version I’ve come across. Especially if you do t use the break hold. The car restarts smoothly and without notice when you lift off the break pedal. Works like a charm for me, and saves me some money at the pumps.

I guess I have whatever the opposite of a lead foot is (a feather foot?)

I absolutely love both brake hold and the way the auto start/stop feels and functions in my car. Press on the gas pedal and it restarts so quickly while it’s automatically releasing the brake. Took me no time at all to readjust my expectations and for the whole process to feel so seamless and (to beat a dead horse) “imperceptible”.

(As an aside, I recall being given a loaner late model P2 S60 (probably a 2016 or so?) some years ago and really hating the auto start/stop in that car.)

I can't find the thread on there but I was just reading it the other day, and the answer is really just 'No' on the newer models. There used to be an option in the models with the Sensus screen to disable it (which only applied to the current drive as per US regs). As @Sdr archer said, it's imperceptible. Had it in other cars (BMW, Chrysler, many other Volvos) and used to always turn it off. I didn't even think to do it in this one, it's no problem at all.

Depending on the year car you are considering it can be disabled permanently, I think it was starting in MY 19, up and until the B5 and B6 powertrains came into use, and there'd be no reason to turn off start stop on those newer models it's so imperceptible, as mentioned.

All I'm seeing in this thread is a whole lot of useless gum flapping: use Orbit

I am in a Volvo tech / hacker discord and this is made by one of the guys there.

Yup, I use it too. And as per the guy that created it:

Sometime in 2020 Volvo updated Sensus cars in the US and Canada to have "memory" for S/S setting. If you turn it off in a drive mode, like default Comfort mode, it says off when you start the car. I bought my S60 in 2019, it did not have memory but later a software update at the dealer was done and it then had "memory".

I beleive 2018 and earlier cars, either were not updated with this function for US/Canada, or don't support it, more testing is needed there. It is not clear, since it was a software update, it may depend on when the last software update (Total Upgrade) was installed on the specific car, to whether the 271 setting will work or not to enable S/S memory.

Volvo did not add "memory" for S/S to cars outside the US, they continued to default to S/S on each start, though those cars support it. This was not easy to change, from build codes, i.e. using VDash or others, as the setting keys off a market setting (enables only if the market variant code for the car is US or Canada).

With OrBit you can change it, as item 271. This allows cars outside US to have the S/S memory.

The later Android/Hybrid cars do not have the ability to disable stop/start from the screen that I know, no button. On 271 setting to 02 will not change anything, no button will appear. Using setting 03 "No button/No symbol, always off (HEV/PHEV/BEV)" I beleive does work for those cars, to disable S/S completely.
(emphasis added)

So I guess you can, it's just not nearly as easy, or necessary. I've also never seen it cut the engine when I'm in Polestar mode, which is really the only time I would care.

Depends on the year of the car, the motor it has, and potentially what region you're in.

The new B motors can not, but I would challenge you to drive it first, because it's not annoying like the old system. It's pretty seamless and does not cause any hesitation.

In the US up through 2018 it could be turned off, but had to be turned off for each trip. Starting in 2019 and for the V90s up through 2021 you could turn it off once and it would save that setting. IDK if that was the same globally or not. 2022 is when our V90 CC got the B motors.

I have a 2018 XC60 that had the option to disable auto start/stop but it required disabling every time I started the car (it would not 'remember' the setting). For 2019 models (and the next few years I think), the softeware changed and the setting would always remember what you set it to (on or off). However, due to regulatory reasons, the software on older model years could not be updated.

The Orbit software (mentioned above) allows you to make the software change yourself. I used it and my auto start/stop now keeps what setting I choose (on or off), even after turning the car off. Well worth the time and effort and Orbit allows you to change other settings as well.
