Is the new key design good?

Maybe it's just because I'm an odd person, but I put a lot of weight on a car's keys... it's what people look at when you're not with the car afterall. Anyways, I was just wondering if the key was fragile (I doubt it) but a review said that it seems like it'll break cuz it's plastic... I'm sure Volvo wouldn't let that happen...

I'm just interested with the impressions of current owners regarding the key design - just looks or functionable too?

Oh yea, and what sound does it make when you unlock the doors? I hate loud honks or high pitched noises.. it just makes the car look cheap... I'd rather it not have any sound actually when it's unlocked.

I don't mean to flood the board with newbie questions, but the car hasn't even arrived over here... there's only one red T5 at the dealer... so I couldn't get a test drive or get a good look either.

I am happy with the key. Its odd look does start conversation. Durability seems fine so far, but I am fairly protective of my stuff.

As far as the sound when locking and unlocking...There is none. I feel opposite of you, I would like an audible, maybe not a loud annoying one however.

It does sound really good when you place it into the ignition slot.....i was hoping for a Switchblade key......but i got over it quickly....everybody is impressed with the key..... http://********************/smile/emthup.gif http://********************/smile/emthup.gif

Thanks, I'm glad that there's no sound... but I guess it could be handy if there were. As for the sound when the key is in the ignition... that seems pretty good... on the volvo website it says "a signal in the key will let you know if you have the right one" or something... I was wondering if the "signal" was the engine starting...

LOL... I had no idea there would be an actual sound.

I was a little skeptical of the new key at first, but I'm used to it now and it doesn't bother me a bit. I am extra gentle with it when I start the car because it's hard not to squeeze the alarm buttons when you turn the key in the ignition. My husband makes fun of the face I make when starting the car...

There's no sound when you lock/unlock the car, but you can program it to blink the lights. I like that because it doesn't make a loud honk, but it's still very easy to tell when you've successfully locked/unlocked the car. The turn signals on the front, side and back will blink twice. Pretty cool, I think. http://********************/smile/emthup.gif

Personally, I like the slimmer and smaller Benz C-class key compared to the S40 key for the following reasons (as I remember the key of my old C-class that I replaced with the S40):
1) the C-class key is shorter and thicker where you 'insert' it into the ignition as it follows the contour of the key's body, and feels less fragile, while the S40 has a more abrupt spike coming off the key's body.

2) the C-class key has a slightly nicer or more elegant shape while the S40 looks like it's twice as big. (it's not, it's only about 25% thicker and the same width)

3) the C-class keyblade feels like it uses a stronger material... the S40 keyblade was light and felt like it was made of plastic (it's not, it's metal, but it's a little too light for my taste)

luckily, i'm not too big on the importance of the key.

Re: Is the new key design good? (BCHan)

I think it´s very cool and it looks a bit luxury. On the other side, it´s big, maby too big. But it´s fun to sit and snap with it like clasp knife

I´ve heard the consol-designers had, among other things, B&O (Bang & Olufsen, hope you know what it is) as design inspiration. And yes, I can see the connections between B&O stuffs and the inside in S40/V50.
So, I would have been cool if they had designed the key more like a B&O remote control!

But, they key isn´t just for the S40/V50 so maby it would have been strange with B&O design in a V40 (they´re still selling them here) or a S60, for example.
