Is my fuel pump bad?

I have a 2005 S40 T5 FWD. The other day it died on my while driving, no sign of any problems the engine just quickly and smoothly lost power. It gave me a "Reduced Engine Performance" message on the dash. I had to call a tow truck and while waiting for the truck I tried starting it a few times and it did fire once but barely, it was almost running like it lost a cylinder and I shut it down after about 2-3 seconds. After I got it home I checked the Schrader valve to see if it has pressure and no gas came out and I could hear the pump turn on. Next I checked the fuel pump fuse and it was bad so I replaced it and tried starting the engine and nothing, checked the same fuse and it was fine. I borrowed a scan tool from a friend and it came up with 3 codes but I accidentally erased them  and only got to see one code which was for an O2 sensor bank 1. About a year ago I replaced the fuel pressure sensor so I don't think its that.

I really don't want to drop my fuel tank just to find out that its not the fuel pump, is there any other things I can do to narrow down my problem? Also there are two possible fuel pumps I would need, one is $300 the other is $1,500! Other than removing the pump how do I know which one I need?

Given what you describe I would either wager the pump is bad or the filter is clogged.

Usually when electronics get hot, they require more power. If your tank was relatively full, and your pump blew a fuse, my .02 would be that the fuel pump filter, which is integrated into the pump, got clogged and the motor heated up since it was not passing any fuel through, requiring enough electricity to burn through the fuse. Given the return line is functioning and your rail contained NO gas under pressure, that would be my assessment, whether it has burned out your pump or not is another question entirely.

Fuel pumps are done by VIN if I recall correctly.

If your 8th VIN digit is a 2 - 30792778 - There's a bosch one on FCPEuro for $202.54
If your 8th VIN digit is a 2 - 30792778 - This is the genuine Volvo one for $351.09
If your 8th VIN digit is a 0 - 31261424 - This a genuine Volvo one for $351.09
Unknown VIN and FWD vs AWD requirement - 30792730 - There's no info on this pump but it says this in the description: For Models with an External Fuel Filter Only, For Emission Code GA02/G302, which to me sounds like diesel in Canada. I don't think the gassers in the lands where GA02/G302 emissions apply have any external fuel filters.

Now that you have PN's, being able to source a cheap OEM grade unit from BOSCH or whoever should be easier, and even then I'd warrant a used one from fleabay and a tank cleanout are in order.

Did your car ever have the Pump Electronic Module (PEM) recall implemented?

I had a case of pump failure due to wiring issue. Dropping the tank revealed the wire going int the pump was worn/torn and soldering it sorted out the problem. My pump WAS problematic also, It buzzed with metallic noise and ultimately I replaced it but it did give me warning signs for years - buzz, and OBD readout of Pump Duty Cycle showing something like 60% on idle was a clear sign it was working on borrowed time, so if you have a change to hook it up to Vida - will help you diagnose the issue.
PEM is also worth checking, fuel pump is usually last resort that goes bad.

The PEM recall moved the location of it. If yours was fixed it is now under the back seat. The driver side I think, for left hand drive.

They came from the factory under the frame near the right side rear tire and it allows a bunch of water and crap to mess with them. Could be a good thing to check before going for the fuel pump.
